Bullard Backing Jewell to Be Success at Town
Bullard Backing Jewell to Be Success at Town
Wednesday, 2nd Feb 2011 15:05

Debut goalscorer Jimmy Bullard says he’s sure manager Paul Jewell will be a success at Portman Road. Bullard, who was in Jewell’s Wigan side which won promotion to the Premier League, volleyed home the Blues’ equaliser as Town came from behind to win 2-1 at Derby last night.

The loanee from Hull said: “I’m sure Paul Jewell will do a great job at Ipswich. He’s one of the best managers I have played for and it makes such a difference to play for someone you respect.

“We enjoyed success at Wigan together and I am looking to do the same during my time at Ipswich.”

Bullard says he had an age to consider his options before lashing in his 30-yard strike: “I had so much time and didn’t know whether to control the ball, hit it with my left or right foot or head it, and I didn’t want to miss it altogether. There was a player in my way so I didn’t know it was a goal until I saw the net ripple.”

The 32-year-old says he was fine after the game: “I got through 90 minutes, which is good, and I should be fit for Saturday’s game.”

dont put him in same catogary as Buckleknee, bullard is class, a big character, we should enjoy him here and the attacking football PJ has bought to the club in less than a month is something to look forward too, In Jewell we trust, COYB

BFP mustn't overplay him though as he is a bit of a sick note, and wonder if he is capable of another 90 mins so soon on Saturday.I know RK overused the sub system;but Paul could give one or two other players some time on pitch which he seems reluctant to do so far.

we are not paying him though, we are paying HULL....... it makes no differance to him if he plays for us or not he still gets paid 45K which ever pocket it comes out of.

Yes, Jimmy REALLY needs to get on Paul's 'good side'. Maybe he actually DOES like to play for his old boss. I think this is a sweet deal and the only downside is the fact it wont be permanent, we need a creative midfielder.

Well said bluelady
what is in his wage packet has nothing to do with itfc or any of our players, we pay hull not him.
If any of our players are not happy with what he is being paid its tuff s@@t if they were playing better we wouldn't need to get him in.

I would like to throw the following point about wages - Clubs have a wage structure usually for two reasons. Firstly to help control costs. Secondly, to keep some kind of pay parity between players. There is a mental side to football along with the physical. How many posters on this site can honestly say they would react positively and redouble their efforts if their manager announced to them on Monday morning at work that they had hired someone new in to do the same job alongside them, and later in the day they discovered the new person was being paid twice their salary! Footballers are only human so with respect bedsitfc, how would you feel feel if you manager said 'tuff s@@t' to you when you found out. Playing football is a mixture of ability and belief, getting the mental side right is equally important, PJ has said as much.

if it was somebody with much more experience and skill than myself i am sure i would understand stringtheory, also we dont know how much he is being paid by us do we and i assume neither do the rest of the team.... its just speculation at the moment.

we do not hold his contract he is a temp
as bluelady has said more experience and skill to get us out of trouble then he will be off (like a trouble shooter).
I agree with parts of what you say about pay structure but he is not our player. If we signed him perm i would expect him to fit in with our pay. Its all about supply and demand.

Some of that 320k is a loan fee, and if it isnt then thats unusual. we paid a loan fee for all sorts of players in the past so why not JB. Fees can be quite high , especilally as he is a 5 million pound "asset" on Hulls balance sheet. For that reason you would normally pay a loan fee and some of the wages. On that basis he might be costing us 10-15k a week plus fee amortised over the 5 months. If the others in our squad are better and have more top flight experience then they can have a moan if they are on less ( 10-15k) but how can they ?! They are not as skilled or experienced , otherwise they would be worth 5 million . Chuck 250-500k ?? Mac 500-1 mill? delaney 400-800k . No contest ! No complaints ( I hope )

I'm with BlueLady on this one, for what it is worth. The wage structure is there to protect the club and reduce friction among the players but we don't have any players that have EVER earned ANYWHERE NEAR what JB is on at Hull, so have NEVER actually been valued by any team as worth a similar amount. (So why would they expect to get the same?)

If GM or Chuck want to find out exactly what other clubs think they are worth they have every chance come the end of the season, though if, as i suspect, no premiership club comes in for either of them then Jimmy's salary will still be a distant dream and they would very possibly be best off accepting a slight contract improvement from ITFC and going up with us next year. :-)

But none of that matters as we are paying Hull to have Jimmy's services- they pay him and have all the risk of injury expense and summer wages etc. In effect we do not pay Jimmy ANY wages, so it is a moot point.

For Hull this is an attempt to get Jimmy in the shop window for a few months, that he really sparkles and they'll hope that a prem team come and take a punt on him for a season or two in the twilight of his career- or in fact that he becomes a Town hero and ME stumps up for a fans' favourite.

Let's see what happens- glad to have him aboard though- if you had said he'd be wearing an ITFC shirt to me 2 years ago i would have assumed it was because Magic had turned us around and we had gone up last season through the play-offs and that ME had invested a cool 5-6 million in a man to build a team around.

Hmm, sounds like what happened to Hull...

Funny old game, saint.

well judging by the team spirit last night and the high fives he was handing around the team at the end i really dont think there is an issue! seemed to fit in like a glove and smiles all around.

Stringtheory has a point - we have two players who have rejected their new contracts. We don't know whether they wanted more money or longer terms, but, if for arguments sake, it was about money, then bringing in a highly paid individual can have a disrupting effect. But this is what being a manager is all about. PJ knows the potential implications and it is his job to man manage the situation.

As others have pointed out, he is here on loan, currently on a contract negotiated when he was a premiership player. If he was permanent, I would expect him to fit in with out pay structure. If other players in the team want to earn similar amounts they need to get us there! If they feel that this team is not good enough, or that they can't wait, then good luck to them, let them ply their trade elsewhere.

A good debut. Although I don't agree with the amount of money we are paying for a loanee - you simply can not deny his ability. Just hope he stays fit, because for that sort of money I expect him toplay every game!!

if our top player is on 17.5k p.w. Jimmy is on 45k p.w. thats a difference of £1.43m per year.

I think if we offered a fee of c £1.5 / 2m which would essentially buy JB out of his contract at Hull with minimal outlay from them and bring him here on our pay structure, i think theres a good chance youll see him here permanently if he does well.

There are alot of contracts being torn up at the moment, and he wants to play footie, so being closer to home, manager he likes, and playing, i think it could work......

'A good debut. Although I don't agree with the amount of money we are paying for a loanee'

I would say that Gio cost us a similar amount per game when he came here, as will some of the sunderland rejects we had, the reality is thats not actually that much for a temp 'contract' just the crazy nature of the game now with bosmans etc!

So ex-footballer Bullard thinks Jewell will be a success? Hardly a news story : if he came out and said that Jewell was a disaster waiting to happen and would ruin the club, now THAT would be news!
