Jewell: New Scout Will Look North and Abroad
Jewell: New Scout Will Look North and Abroad
Saturday, 26th Feb 2011 09:54

Paul Jewell says new scout David Hamilton’s role at Town will involve him looking for new players in the north and overseas. Jewell confirmed that Hamilton, his former Wigan and Derby chief scout, would be joining his staff earlier in the week, having left Walsall where he held a similar position last month.

Jewell says Hamilton will work alongside chief scout Steve McCall: “We’re always looking for good players whatever creed or nationality they are. I think bringing David in full-time helps Steve McCall. We’re an awful long way from anywhere here, so there’s an awful lot of travelling involved.

“David will cover maybe the north and go abroad and will work closely with Steve and myself about players. He knows what sort of players I want, he’s worked with me before and he’s a good addition to our squad.”

But despite having a lot of faith in Hamilton’s abilities, he dismisses widespread reports claiming that the 50-year-old was responsible for bringing Antonio Valencia to Wigan, the winger eventually moving on to Manchester United for £16 million: “No he didn’t, I did! Make sure you get that!

“I watched Valencia to play against Poland for Ecuador in Germany in the World Cup and he was outstanding. When I checked my records I couldn’t believe that he was only 19.

“He was on loan from Villarreal at Recreativo at the time. We did a great deal that we could loan him for a year and then we could buy him for €7 million. So, he’s not taking the credit for that one!

“Did he discover Jimmy Bullard? No, that was me as well! Let me think who he did discover. He discovered Robbie Savage when we were at Derby!”

Jewell says Hamilton’s role involves him assessing Town’s upcoming opponents: “He does match reports and he’ll work very closely with Steve McCall.”

Hmmm, maybe PJ should take up the scouting job - seems to be better at it than Hamilton!

I'd like to see Hamilton go to Scotland, there may be some gems there, just look at Charlie Adam and Graham Dorrans for example.

We had a scout in South America a few years ago. Remember Jim getting very excited over Civelli!

We also signed players from Italy (Sereni), Holland (Reuser), Canada (Peters), Spain (Counago, Sito), Nigeria (Finidi) and Im sure many others in the past before the club almost went bust!
I think extentsive scouting is an expensive business for many clubs outside premier league.
Also De Vos in Canada is a big help as well as

Who takes responsibility for Palacios? Admittedly not as big a find as Valencia but still a fairly decent player.
I imagine watching those games abroad has given Jewell a few contacts too.

Fantastic news, lets hope he can unearth some gems up north. Beattie, Wark,Brazil, Burley.......... names that roll off the tongue from our illustrious past to name but a few. Mr Jewell seems to be looking long term with this new scouting system which can only be to the benefit of our great club.

I hope the two years Jewell has had out of the game will mean he has seen a lot of talented 19, 20, 21 year olds who he will be attempting to bring to Ipswich in the summer.

Going up north may lead to a loan signing of Jason Roberts til the end of the season and for next season head for some useful Dutch strikers or midfielders and some defenders from Belgium or france that could be some bargains as they dont require heavy wage demands.

Bring back dutch class in Ipswich again. Players like Reuser to get us were we belong in the premiership.

So Hamilton will only scout north of Ipswich and the rest of the world, while poor old Steve McCall has to try and sift through the hotbed of world football talent: everything in England south of Birmingham. Looks like Hamilton has a cushy number there. I'd like to see a little more parity, perhaps by splitting McCall's workload and giving everything west of Reading to Hamilton aswell.

find some Dutch 2nd division centre forward that scores goals for fun! Don't let clueless Clegg do any of the contract negotiations. The first half against Portsmouth is the best I've seen from us for many a year. If only we had someone who knows how to put the ball in the net. Can't help thinking Rhodes would have prospered under our new regime
