Clegg: No Need to Sell Wickham
Clegg: No Need to Sell Wickham
Friday, 15th Apr 2011 15:13

Simon Clegg has reiterated that Town are under no pressure to sell 18-year-old striker Connor Wickham in the summer. However, the Blues chief executive admits that any player has his price.

Clegg said: “We have no need to sell Connor to balance the books. There is no need for him to leave the club. We are in a privileged position to not have to force Connor into any decisions.

“I anticipate that Connor will be here next season, although we live in a fluid world and every player has a price.

“If an offer comes in for any player on our books that is two or three times what we think they are worth, we would be crazy not to take it. If one came in half what we think a player is worth, we would be crazy to let him go.

“It is my responsibility, along with the owner and manager, to gauge where the tipping point is.”

Clegg says boss Paul Jewell will have cash for summer signings with targets already being eyed: “Paul will have money made available to him in line with what his two predecessors have had.

“To be frank, our manager would not have come if the owner and I had not indicated that money would be available to him.”

So how do you explain McCaughley and Norris walking out the door for nothing?

Clegg doesn't half say some stupid things... he does himself no favours. I dont think anyone on this notice board likes him. I reckon norris and others may leave, many signed during Magilton who was given money and offered these players ridiculous money and now they want more and they are not worth it. Bring on the summer and next year.

I really hope that by "money" Clegg means "good money" enough to get Bullard on perm and a striker or two with similar experience + deffenders accordingly if McAuley, Delaney and etc decide to go. Also for that holding midfielder PJ is talking about...
Let's also hope he will be able to bring all these!

I assume you mean 'McAuley', and if they do leave it will be for exactly the same reason as we would sell wickham for a ridiculous offer...they want more money that what the club and manager thinks they are worth and we have to make sensible financial decisions

''So how do you explain McCaughley and Norris walking out the door for nothing?''

its all about total contract values, we wont be budgetting based on fees or wages in isolation, so whilst they would walk out the door, itll be all within a budget / business plan. The costs for these guys will have been written off against an ME tax bill in 2009, so it has no impact now. The only thing that has impact now is the salary framework. itll be about a total contract value within said salary framework. these guys earn up to £700K or so a year, so thats the only consideration now.......

fees are a one off cost drawn down against tax liabilites, wages are an ongoing cashflow commitment, which is what actually take smost clubs down, not the fees!

That just sounded like "We won't sell Connor Wickham so renew your season tickets but we might sell him"

“If an offer comes in for any player on our books that is two or three times what we think they are worth, we would be crazy not to take it. If one came in half what we think a player is worth, we would be crazy to let him go."

So unless someone stumps up £24-36 million he's staying? Fantastic I'll get a new season ticket immediately

pazelle - I think you've been reading too many newspapers........ In fact I would suggest that £12m probably IS two or three times what he's worth right now. That's not to say he won't be worth that in a year or two.

Summer signings eh! So we should have someone in by November then, based on previous debacles.

Selling him now would be bad for us and for the player, he's just signed a new contract so make him honour it otherwise what is the point in it?
If he becomes our main striker which is looking highly possible he will only get more goals and his value will only rise - he's still so young and a good promotion season in the champ can do wonders for a youngster - look how much better Carroll got in a promotion season!

''pazelle, you are articulate and talk a lot of sense. You are clearly on the wrong forum!''

is there actually a forum for people who can communicate using the english language, including functional grammer and punctuation coupled with intelligent debate?! I thought that was the antithesis of a forum.....?!

sadly the "no need to sell" comment does not translate to "wont sell"!

So now we all know. Mr. Clegg negociates from a position of "Please don't offer that, it's 3 times what he is worth" Not a very astute person is he? What does he DO?
Doesn't it simplify things to amalgamate the Manager's job with that of Intermediary/Decision Maker/No Idea person?

Why all so negative?. I for one don't believe Glegg is a a vey good chief executive however he has just made simple comment which many of you are taking to the extreme and trying to find something to moan about. Cheer up everybody we should all be very pleased that such a talent as Conor is going nowhere unless a stupid offer comes in. There's nothing more in it than that. P.s. Many thanks Marcus for your continued support.

I have no confidence in Clegg I'm afraid. If McAuley and Norris leave for nothing it is mainly his fault. Roy and Paul have made it clear that these deals should have been done LAST SUMMER.

As for Wickham, he will leave in the Summer. Clegg and Evans will cash in. And in all honesty I wouldn't blame ME.

I don't get all the hate going on... He's only speaking the truth, but that has reassured me a lot over the future of Wickham. It means that if he leaves it will be for an amount which will be amazingly beneficial for the club, especially in Paul Jewell's hands. If not then we still have a decent striker in our team with loads of potential, either way is good for us!

£15 million and a seasons long loan I Reckon. I would take that.

No need to put up gate prices either but you have. If the right money is offered, he will go - and with our blessing. He'll always be one of ours.

We need to spend £4m plus on a striker who can score 20+... Have we money for that Mr Clegg? If not, Wickham goes. Good day.

So if someone offered half of what Lisbie is worth, would we have to pay THEM!
