Murray and Hyam Sign Deals
Murray and Hyam Sign Deals
Tuesday, 26th Apr 2011 18:01

Striker Ronan Murray and midfielder Luke Hyam have signed their new one-year deals with the Blues. The 19-year-old pair were amongst the legion of players whose current terms are up this summer.

Murray, who was recalled from a loan spell at Torquay over the weekend, and Hyam put pen to paper this afternoon.

Hyam said: “I am obviously delighted to have been handed a new contract and now I’ve got to get my head down and try and impress the manager.

“It’s been an up and down year for me, with playing games at the start of the season and then getting the red card at Reading and then tearing my hamstring.

"But I’ve been involved in the squad lately and now I’ve got to push on and show the manager that I’m worth a place in his side next season.”

Murray was similarly looking ahead to next year: “It’s a big year for me next season. I really enjoyed my time at Torquay but I’m an Ipswich Town player and want to play games here.

“The manager has shown he will give young players a chance with Josh Carson playing games and I’ve got to get myself in that situation.”

Ipswich-born Hyam made 11 first team starts and two sub appearances earlier in the season under Roy Keane's management but is yet to feature for Paul Jewell despite having been on the bench in recent weeks.

Republic of Ireland U21 international Murray scored on his first team debut at Exeter in August and has made 11 sub appearances for Town but is yet to start.

During just over a month at Torquay, the County Mayo-born frontman scored once in four starts and three sub appearances.

Town boss Paul Jewell offered new contracts to six of the club's first and second-year pros and is yet to make decisions on winger Reggie Lambe, who is on loan at Bristol Rovers, and injured midfield duo David Cawley and Jamie Griffiths.

Yes, this is good news. It's always gratifying when players brought through the junior ranks commit themselves to the club for a further spell. But let's not delude ourselves. In PJ's eyes the jury is out. They have to push on and cement a permanent place in the 18 man squad. PJ has bigger fish to fry. No-one would be surprised if a) a defensive midfielder and b) a ("25 goal a season") striker were to be signed during the summer. PJ would not be doing his job if he did not look to supplement his squad externally. I fear therefore that unless these players make a massive impact in pre-season they will be sent out on loan and drift into obscurity well before their new contracts expire.

Good luck to both of them. I hope my negative prognosis proves to be wrong. The challenge is theirs. We'll know soon enough if either, or both, of them are up to it.

Why do we keep playing players that don't give a toss about the club (ie. McAuley & Norris) yet leave our youngsters, who would have displayed more passion (ie Tommy Smith & Hyam) on the bench?
If players won't sign, they shouldn't be allowed to pull on the blue shirt... Simple!

I doubt many of this current squad will survive into next season - and those that do , will not be automatic 1st teamers, but more likely the second string in a 20 man squad.

Prepare for widespread (meaningful) changes in the summer - LONG OVERDUE !!

Good news but let them play in the reserves a while - too much pressure too early will ruin them

Nugent isn't prolific - he only like scoring against us! Also he's injury prone, & I just have an idea he is not a "team" player. Our 20 goals a season man I think is going to have to come from League 1 or 2, as I can't see a current top championship striker seeing Ipswich as an attractive proposition, particularly after the recent results. We certainly don't want an old Premier league "has been" - we've already tried that one with Jason Scotland.

Good news on both as young prospects and only on year contract if they dont come on as expected .
Agree with a number of posts if Mac and Norris wont sign to keep their options open dont play them ,we are safe and should treat the last games as the start of pre season friendlies to view more options Hyam,Murray,OConnor,Peters ,Smith or ODea at centre back .Lets get some pace and young fighting spirit back after two awful confidence blowing results .
I wonder if Supple fancies playing again yet ?

Both these two have shown signs of being real prospects and like many would play them this weekend in 442. Like Bent Ambrose etc they have to get down to some hard work in the summer if they are to succeed at this level. Hyam needs strength and pace while Murray needs more and pace/skills to score goals. i wish them well but plenty of younsters fade away at this stage of their careers.

Pardon me if this comes across as a mite patronising, but while I understand the desire to play kids with passion ahead of seasoned professionals who may be influenced by other considerations, I think (I know) that most supporters want to see, and support, the best team available.

Everybody has opinions about individual players. What one fan thinks is the best thing since sliced bread, another will have long since despatched to the dustbin of history.

It must be for PJ to select a squad (an 11) to represent the club. If he thinks that selecting a fuming GMac or DN represents a better chance of winning a game than picking the the young bucks then we must respect that.

As long as they perform, and it must be said we can justifiably claim that no player has in the last two games, then we cannot expect to see the youngsters replacing their elders any time soon.
