Released Reading defender Ivar Ingimarsson is the latest player to have been linked with a summer move to the Blues. The 33-year-old veteran was told he wouldn’t be offered new terms by the Royals last week after a hugely successful eight-year spell in Berkshire.

Capped 30 times by Iceland, Ingimarsson began his career in his home country with Valur and IBV before joining Torquay United on loan in October 1999.

A £200,000 switch to Brentford followed a month later, then in July 2002, having been linked with George Burley's Blues, the just over 6ft tall defender joined Wolves on a free transfer but made little impact at Molineux before moving on to Reading for £175,000 in October 2003.

Since then Ingimarsson, a close friend of former Blue Hermann Hreidarsson, has been an important figure at the Madejski Stadium, making 276 starts and five sub appearances, scoring 12 goals and also captaining the side. Injuries, however, limited his involvement to 13 starts and one appearance from the bench last season.

Town are certainly in the market for an experienced central defender due to Gareth McAuley leaving the club with Sunderland’s Nyron Nosworthy widely thought to be the number one target. The 30-year-old is believed to have been in talks with the Blues, Crystal Palace and coincidentally the Royals in recent weeks.

We understand Town have been continuing discussions with a number of players in recent days with one potential target shown around the club yesterday.

Tranmere sources continue to strongly tip 21-year-old left-back Aaron Cresswell with a move to the Blues with some forum posts claiming the player himself has said he will be definitely be joining Town.

Cresswell, who TWTD reported was on Town’s radar last month, is out of contract and has refused new terms at Prenton Park and as he is under 24 the League One side would be entitled to compensation. Southampton and a number of other unnamed Championship clubs have also been linked.

Elsewhere, we’re reliably informed that a tweeter claiming to be former Blue Kieron Dyer over the last few days is in fact a fake.

If he was fit, he would be a solid signing. Just not the long term fix though..

We have 2 centre halves, we need 6 for the squad in case of injuries. We shouldn't have let Eastman and Brown scurry off - absolute fact and it will come back and bite us on the ass.

I'm off to wiki Cresswell.

this is all starting to annoy me! every season, we gonna sign him, we are gonna sign him to, just to sell season tickets, its all aload of sh*t , we wont sign any1 decent because no1 wants to come here, every1 wants to play in the premiership, we will end up with lower league players which aint gonna be good enough, sorry to moan but its true, all this paper talk and internet gossip never comes to anything, we were surposed to sign nugent and chopra lol what a load of crap

Not exactly a very inspiring choice and the fact that he is still discussing possible terms suggests that Town are offering yet another poor deal. Clegg Out!

In my humble opinion, to follow up on @James1989 - I think we need to be looking at lower league players. They are hungrier for success and we should be looking at building a team that will mostly be able to play together in future years (prem) with a few more additions as and when. Look at Norwich. Most of us had not heard of their team but they had a great team spirit and belief that got them promoted - oh and a good manager. Just a point though.

said 2 myself i wouldnt comment on others opinions, but what is wrong with people on here? hes a damn good player, better than macauley, imo. around same age too, yet people wanted macauley 2 stay(me included), yet say this guy 2 old?!!! at the end of the day, we not able to sign vidic, terry or the like, what we can do is sign good players, & he fits that bill. just seems that whoever we trying 2 sign is getting criticised on here. whoever we sign, just get behind them. if they fail then you every right 2 complain about them. just give them a chance

if ne1 on her really thinks eastman or brown are good enough at this level then theyre kidding themselves. eastman is 2 rigid, no skill. brown is ok but not strong enough 2 play cb at this level.

If we resigned Hermann and this bloke, and Gudjohnson then the team could come out of the tunnel to Sigur Ros - which would be weird but a great improvement on the dogs breakfast of a build up that we endure at the moment.

all this Jazz about "he will only do one season at best" "too old" blah blah blah, we CAN build for the future but we needs players for the now otherwise we will be building from league one, we need the mix of experience to develop the youth out on the pitch and on the training ground, he is only a year older than G Mac but doesnt look out of his 20's! I think this would be a solid signing if he stays fit, he was immense at PR just a few short months back.

He has been excellent for Reading for 8 years.
Given our present circumstances, would be an excellent signing for 2 years. Potential Captain material IF he stays fit.....
Definately worth signing up....

Why do we have to keep chasing everyone's cast-off's?
Cant we actually do a proper scouting job, and attempt to BUY a young player with some potential from the lower leagues?
Surely this would be more beneficial long-term than looking around the reject bin for some miraculous player whose only going to really shine for us, and get us promoted?
