Clegg: No Comment Until Deals Are Done
Clegg: No Comment Until Deals Are Done
Tuesday, 28th Jun 2011 15:23

Town chief executive Simon Clegg says he is keeping to the club’s usual policy of not commenting on transfer speculation until deals are done. The Blues are currently in talks with Sunderland after the Black Cats made an offer of £9 million plus a further £4 million in additional clauses for striker Connor Wickham with sources in the North-East claiming Town have accepted that fee.

Speaking to reporters this afternoon, Clegg said: “I’m not saying anything until I have something to say, and when I have got something to say then I will say it and you guys, and particularly your readers, will then know that it’s the truth.”

Regarding Wickham specifically, the chief executive would only be drawn so far: “There has been speculation about Connor every transfer window since I came to the club and this one is no different.

"In fact in this one it seems to be much greater than previous ones, so we’ll see where we get to.”

With reports in the North-East claiming the offer for the 18-year-old has been accepted, Clegg says that as soon as a deal involving any player is complete, he makes sure fans are informed: “If a transfer of a player had taken place, then I would have said something because I think it is incumbent on me to make public the position of this football club as soon as I have something to say.”

Bid has been accepted then, unless they are just trying to add fuel to fire and finally get a bid from big four clubs.

We will get the usual rubbish of undisclosed fee. Probably £5 million plus loads of add ons which might never materialise.

Cleggy will come clean when the time is right..... When he announces that Wickham has gone for 5m and we have replaced him with some old mate of Jewell or Hutchings from Wigan for 35p !!!!

Wickham said I would love to stay at ipswich and get promoted with them... i doubt he would leave when we have a new season new players etc. I would no be surprised if it was started by an ipswich source just to tempt liverpool spurs etc to basically s*** themselves. He hasnt had near enough quality or chance to prove his worth yet, but you never know.

Typical that today I get a club "Blues News" email, featuring an article about the new home kit and a nice picture of Connor modelling it!

And £43. Too expensive. I've seen JJB selling new Premier League team's shirts for £35!

£43 for a Town home shirt? You serious?

Not been denied by Clegg so believe there is some substance to the Sunderland offer. Agree with the policy of the club by reporting only facts when it comes to transfers. We had too many high hopes with players signing during the Keane era and they mostly fell flat.

Does Clegg have enough time to sell ME Olympic hospitality packages as well as look after ITFC transfers?

He would be better served playing at ITFC for another season rather than sitting on the bench playing for a team like sunderland . All due respect to sunderland but if Connor is any good then he is wasted there ..he would be better off giving it one more season with us and then either going up with ITFC or transfering to a top team !! Not the best move i think !!

I really think that it would do Connor's development as a player much more good to stay with us for this coming season. Hopefully, then go up with us and receive premier league wages as well. Being in a premier league's squad this coming season will do his career no good whatsoever. Do hope he stays. Look what happened to Richard Wright. His agent was to blame for his premature transfer to Arsenal.

History tells us the kid is going (Dyer, Wright, Bramble...) and the new FIFA imperatives to include native-born players only increases the likelihood. What remains is to make the most of his exit. I have a feeling this is only the start of the bidding and if I was Gleggy, I would play it out openly and at a gentle pace. Come all ye and bring your wallets.

If this happens, I hope the Sunderland fans won't expect too much too soon from Wickham. He's not going to set the Premiership alight in the next season, but with a bit of patience I believe he's capable of it given time

£9mil upfront and another £4mil - We need to snap there hand off.

Im a big fan of Wickham but im realistic - £9m+ is great business imo

ITFC are hoping for a feeding fenzy around CW. They have a deal drafted with Sunderland, but not signed that will have a 'use by date', but Oly Clegg is hoping that the nibble that the BC's have had will bring others out to the water hole - ITFC will be up against the clock to secure another bite before the Sunderland deal expires. CW's heart is not set on the north east, its set on the north west!

Apparently all the Mackem fans are hoping Liverpool come in at the last minute same as a lot of us are..........

Connor Wickham will be leaving ITFC. We must hope that PJ has lined up an outstanding replacement.

Interesting link there. Clearly, we want to keep him, the Sunderland fans don't want him and neither it would seem do Liverpool.

I hope this deal goes through and if it doesn't, Wickham will get found out next year struggling to add to his 13 goals in 65 appearances and his value will plummet !!!!

Please Brucey, sign up this skilless potential !!!!

The positive aspect is that either outcome could be very good for Ipswich. How often do we find ourselves in that enviable position?
It would be great to see how Connor and Chops would perform together but in reality I sense an inevitability that he will be moving on.
Good luck Connor whatever the outcome is.

Bye. Hope we gwt a decent amount of cash up front, rather than add ons, as we need to re-invest that money sharpish. Would have liked to have him fire us into the premier league before leaving, but never mind.
