Jewell Pleased With Wickham Fee
Jewell Pleased With Wickham Fee
Wednesday, 29th Jun 2011 16:41

Town boss Paul Jewell says the Blues have to be satisfied with the fee they negotiated with Sunderland for striker Connor Wickham. The Black Cats have paid Town an initial £8.1 million with the deal set to rise to beyond £12 million via add-ons, while the Blues will receive a percentage of the profit the Wearsiders make if they sell the England U21 international frontman.

Jewell said: "When Sunderland's offer was accepted, we gave Connor permission to speak to Sunderland and left it up to the player.

"I would have been delighted to have seen him turn up for training with us on Friday but Connor is understandably keen to play in the Premier League and we wish him well.

"The move had to be right for Ipswich Town as well though, and I think we have to be satisfied with the fee we have received.

"We would have liked to have kept the lad, obviously, and weren't looking to sell, but when you get a good offer for a player, any player, you have to look at it."

Jewell, who has been on holiday in Florida, will be back at Playford Road for the start of pre-season training on Friday. Town's academy scholars, including left-back Joe Whight who was offered a two-year professional contract at the end of last season, are already back at the club.

The sell of Wickham is a good one. Although values have increased generally since the Dyer sale a few years ago. My understanding is that we were on the hunt for a further 3-5 players regardless of this sale, and I'm not sure this now means that the average target prices will increase much above £1.5-2m, it just means that it eases the blow for ME as he looks at ways of funding the growth.

@Pazelle - You say we have one scout? I'm pretty sure that there are more, if not then why were Town represented at that Spanish league game earlier in the year? Must have had someone point us that way. There are plenty of people around the world looking out for players who would inform Ipswich, maybe not official scouts but still.

This is a great deal for ITFC. £8m up front for a player who, let's be realistic, is (for now at least) someone who we can replace. Who knows what the future brings for CW, hopefully a very successful future we all hope, but right now he is an 18 year old with bags of potential with everything still to prove. We have to accept that every player has his price - I bet that Southampton never wanted to sell Walcott not too long ago, but it's a lot of money to reject and sometimes you can demotivate a top young player out of giving his best for you if you get in the way of a big move like this, which would make keeping him less of a bonus.

As for people claiming that they will stay away from PR in protest next season...Well, Good! Anyone who has such a narrow minded outlook as a football fan obviously doesn't feel much passion for the game, or the club for that matter! What kind of proper 'supporters' turn their backs?? We all know the losers threatening to do that on here will all be back out of the woodwork when the day comes that we are back in the top flight...

@CGH
We have one scout. And apart from one Belgian we've only been linked with players in the UK.

I seem to remember we turned down bids for another 'promising' player called Dean Bowditch when in a very similar position (Hatrick, England player etc) Look how that worked out!!! 8.1 million for a player who did half a season at championship and only stood out in the odd game- how can anyone not see this as a positive result! Some people need to get realistic about the club- keeping Connor would not have automatically promoted but 8.1+million will help us build and be a better team! One long term injury to him next season and we would be struggling! Good business town!

Lots of nice warm assumptions that Jewell will actually be given this £8.1m...(not quite the £13m we were all led to believe either, eh! ) ...and whats the use of add on's over umpteen years !

Now lets sit back a watch other Clubs to tell Town to fook off when PJ goes knocking with a fist full of £££ in the hope of securing a decent striker to replace CW. NOT A HOPE IN HELL !!

Sad that we've not been able to hold on to him for another year or two.
PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE don't waste the money on overpriced (English) has beens looking for better contracts than their current clubs are willing to give.
Let's look overseas and sign a gem or two. London_Blue is right: we used to be class at doing that!!
Balkestein and Shumulikoski were all we could get in a hurry with an untested manager, but now we have a manager with a keen eye for unearthing European talent, and decent money earned from nurturing and selling our academy's best!

the price we got is 8.1 million, the extras when they arrive in bits and pieces , will hardly swell the promotion war chest, we wanted it all now, would have preferred 10 million in one lump. Andy Carrol sells for 35 million, conner is going to be a better player than him. No i am not at all pleased. COYB

We dont just have one scout! We have got a network across Europe and Jewell has personal conacts in S.America.

So even if we did only have one peron on the payroll directly called a scout, Jewell has a much larger pool of people to call on.

Intercept doesn't want players that are 'English' 'cos they'll be overpriced. Last time we went up we bought some English players and they did us alright. But that's okay Intercept show your prejudices.

LondonBlue Man U hardly looked very technical against Barca. I know it was Barca, but Man U showed zero technical ability apart from some Rooney inspiration.

Like Pazelle says I don't care about the money (probably ME does) I just don't like seeing our most promising player leave. And this bloke put so much effort in each week that he got himself booked. He was the one that looked like he cared.

Hope PJ can get the players in but young players, academy lads even if they are English provide more interest than ageing journeyman no matter what their nationality

Pazelle, has some good points so give him a break. However, I do agree the comment re Bellamy from Rosseden - good point also. Still poor business from Town, we were all led to believe that the release claus was £10mil & Town have caved it @ £8Mil..besides IF we ever do get promoted then we will struggle to ever attract a player of Whickhams ability & quality or even find one for £10Mil..I am surprised he hasn't stayed and got a full season in the Chamosionship, its not ass though he wouldn't ever get the chance to go - why sin an extension on his contract to 2014 knowing that he would go at the first offer of Prem footy??

OK Raedwald, I concede we have bought good english players, the point I meant to put across is that english forwards in particular always seem to be overpriced or underperforming. To an extent we have benefitted from this in the Wickham sale, but there are bargains to be had if we're willing to look beyond Sharp, Evans, Hulse etc.
I do believe Chopra was a good deal but will never get to see the pairing of him and Connor now.

IPSWICH TOWN FOOTBALL CLUB - is in the process of leveling out where it deserves to be - linked with it's ambition, and some of it's all too easily satisfied Supporters.

As a Supporter who has channeled, I estimate thousands of pounds, over a period of 40+ years in the Club's direction, I AM NOT IMPRESSED at all with the current state of affairs - ON or OFF the pitch.

But I have great memories of the good times, and there were many.

A very pale shadow of it's former self. Sadly.

Pazelle - just ignore the flack - some people are, and will continue to be, satisfied with anything.
The kind who would laugh all day and night when they lose at whatever - and we do seem to have our fair share of them as a Club.
Not the greatest recipe for success for sure.

Sad to see such potential talent leave but as has been mentioned once the offer from Sunderland was accepted; and wouldn't that have been on orders from Clegg not Jewell, then CW had to option to go or stay. He did what most 18-year olds would have done and took the carrot.
I don't think we can criticise Paul Jewell here. If he is given those additional funds to use in the transfer market and spends wisely then we do have an overall stronger team and a better chance of success that we would have done had CW stayed.

I believe we should of held out for £12 million up front even if we had him all next season he would not of dropped in value imho. The lad has played half a season of chump football and out of position. Why could he at least not have played one full season as a central striker and we really get the benefits of a player we have brought up. Yes £8m is a lot for a championship side, but we were told we dont need to sell.
