Jewell Expecting Double Signing On Monday
Jewell Expecting Double Signing On Monday
Saturday, 23rd Jul 2011 12:00

Town manager Paul Jewell says he is hopeful of making two further additions to his squad on Monday. Those players are likely to be Fulham keeper David Stockdale, who will join on loan, and Arsenal striker or wideman Jay Emmanuel-Thomas.

Speaking after last night’s 1-1 draw at Southend, Jewell wouldn’t be drawn on specific names for fear of jeopardising the deals: “I don’t want to say anything which might upset the clubs we’re dealing with.

"I’m not trying to be evasive but hopefully we’ll have two new players in the building on Monday.

“I have to be respectful. I’ve been in the game long enough and don’t want to say something that people could take offence to and change their minds. But I’ll be disappointed if we don’t have two new players available for the Colchester game.

“One is a loan and one is a permanent signing. When I got on the bus today, as far as I was aware, fees were agreed. Nothing official, but I think I’ll be disappointed if it doesn’t progress over the weekend.”

On Thursday, the Blues were linked with a loan move for Stockdale, 25, and with a £1 million permanent deal for 20-year-old Emmanuel-Thomas.

Stockdale seems certain to be the loanee and Emmanuel-Thomas would appear to be the other expected addition, although one report in the local press in South Yorkshire claims Town have confirmed their interest in Ched Evans, but this may just be a reference to Jewell’s comment earlier in the week that Evans is “on the list” when he also said no bid had been made for the Welshman.

Emmanuel-Thomas has not been involved with the Arsenal first team squad in pre-season, but scored two goals in a 9-0 reserves victory at Hastings on Tuesday, having previously netted once in a 3-0 win at Woking. One report claims Burnley and Portsmouth have also had offers accepted by the Gunners.

Leeds were also interested in signing Stockdale on loan but are reported to have been unable to agree a deal with the Cottagers. Swansea recently made an unsuccessful attempt to sign the former York and Darlington man on a permanent basis.

Town are likely to have to pay a loan fee for Stockdale, who was named in two full England squads last season, while Fulham have also insisted on a recall clause.

Oh dear, please tell me we are not going to miss another signing. All these teams want the same players. If it is a battle of who offers best terms, i am not hopeful.

Chicago Blue :- Those really were the days !
A thought occurs, surely if we are paying a signing on fee and giving an immediate return clause, then surely his wages can't be massive ? Or can they ?
JET, [ as already posted, ] will hold my breath till it happens [ the signing of that is ]. Also, with him being versatile, another player of ours springs to mind. Having said that, Jamie Peters doesn't have his height, but can certainly jump. No, I'm not likening one to the other, before I'm pounced upon.

i know he has massive wages but surely we, as he hasn't been picked up yet, could look at upson? we got rid of around 30k of wages with bullard, mcauley and norris i think the majority of that is now chopra and then a lot can go towards a player like upson or similar caliber CB's

Would be two very good signings if it happens. Of course one is only a loan - which means we will still require three permanent signings before the season starts (RB, CB and midfielder).

The best possible way of keeping possible signings quiet is to give the story to TWTD and paste it all over the internet.

BTW PJ, we all know that you're trying your best.

I'm sorry but I just dont understand these signings if true at all I'm afraid.why sign a loan keeper like him who could be recalled anytime, especially having to pay some sort of fee, makes no sense! We all know flip flop couldn't catch a cold but rb,cb,cm,winger, striker surely more of a priority! As for this jet guy from arsenal,to unpredictable, not good enough at this mo to get goals to help for promotion push.I'm afraid another mid-table mediocrity this season with this squad, simply not good enough, can see 6 stronger sides than us,as it pains me to say!

Manuelthetisfanclub i am afraid to say this, but most of your postings are a nonsense, as befits a man whos moniker pays tribute to one of the most average and dirty players to play for my team. Jay emmanuel thomas would be a steal for a million, if we get him, you muppet.

Commanding leader at the back is essential. Delaney and Smith was a disastrous pairing last season, both ok alongside Gmac but not good together. Unless addressed,Conceding at set pieces this season is going to be horribly familiar. Shame we didnt try for Shittu or Martin Taylor who was the best centre half i saw at this level last season.

Chepstowblue i lik the two players you suggest. But we have just signed best centre half in division if he can stay fit. Big if however as he is getting on a bit.

Two very good signings if we get them both really looking forward to seeing Emmanuel Thomas sign up! I agree with everyone else we really need a defender and the cambridge and southend games showed this. We have proven we have finally got a strong forward force now we need to protect it!
