Jewell Expecting Double Signing On Monday
Jewell Expecting Double Signing On Monday
Saturday, 23rd Jul 2011 12:00

Town manager Paul Jewell says he is hopeful of making two further additions to his squad on Monday. Those players are likely to be Fulham keeper David Stockdale, who will join on loan, and Arsenal striker or wideman Jay Emmanuel-Thomas.

Speaking after last night’s 1-1 draw at Southend, Jewell wouldn’t be drawn on specific names for fear of jeopardising the deals: “I don’t want to say anything which might upset the clubs we’re dealing with.

"I’m not trying to be evasive but hopefully we’ll have two new players in the building on Monday.

“I have to be respectful. I’ve been in the game long enough and don’t want to say something that people could take offence to and change their minds. But I’ll be disappointed if we don’t have two new players available for the Colchester game.

“One is a loan and one is a permanent signing. When I got on the bus today, as far as I was aware, fees were agreed. Nothing official, but I think I’ll be disappointed if it doesn’t progress over the weekend.”

On Thursday, the Blues were linked with a loan move for Stockdale, 25, and with a £1 million permanent deal for 20-year-old Emmanuel-Thomas.

Stockdale seems certain to be the loanee and Emmanuel-Thomas would appear to be the other expected addition, although one report in the local press in South Yorkshire claims Town have confirmed their interest in Ched Evans, but this may just be a reference to Jewell’s comment earlier in the week that Evans is “on the list” when he also said no bid had been made for the Welshman.

Emmanuel-Thomas has not been involved with the Arsenal first team squad in pre-season, but scored two goals in a 9-0 reserves victory at Hastings on Tuesday, having previously netted once in a 3-0 win at Woking. One report claims Burnley and Portsmouth have also had offers accepted by the Gunners.

Leeds were also interested in signing Stockdale on loan but are reported to have been unable to agree a deal with the Cottagers. Swansea recently made an unsuccessful attempt to sign the former York and Darlington man on a permanent basis.

Town are likely to have to pay a loan fee for Stockdale, who was named in two full England squads last season, while Fulham have also insisted on a recall clause.

No on both counts. Not interested in a loan keeper and have no interest in Thomas seeing as he's 4th on the list in terms of a winger after Coppinger, Whittingham and Henry and definitely not the first striker choice that being Sharp. Why not up the bid for Henry!?

We'll see though. Now, go and get Bullard and spend that 8.1 million on a centreback for God's sake!!!!!

I don't think Fulop will be sold. On his day he is awesome too, just look what he can do from that Cardiff away game last season. He does seem to have made a shaky start to this preseason though but I think Jewell has faith in him enough to keep him 2nd keeper spot if Stockdale does come.

I have this feeling that Jewell is gonna stick with Edwards, or maybe even give Peters a chance in right-back if he can't find a suitable player on the market. i'd love to hear news of a decent centre-back coming in soon though, must admit!

Also, like the statement putting the pressure on Clegg to get the deals done. Wise move Jewell, like it.

Get these two in and then lets sort the defense out.

I guess we have to play a small fee to say if we get Fulham in the cup we can use him. Or we can use him in the cup anyway.

Otherwise our cup run won't last long.

I wonder if Jewell will be using Emmanuel-Thomas as a midfielder, he used to play there as captian for Arsenal youth and looked very good there, I think he did even play as a defender, so he is versatile, hopefully Jeweell can get the best out of him.

Muhren Thijson wasnt a double signing if I recall. Muhren arrived first then talked Thijson into joining later.

Chicago_Blue - Happy happy days when Muhren & Thijseen came to town. Was rather hoping that we could have looked at bringing in a couple of good Dutch players - that would have been the best result of our pre-season tour.

Now the nail biting begins until Monday when hopefully these signings will be confirmed.

Still need to sort out our defence!

I don't believe these signings were what a majority of town fans were hoping for. Certainly no harm in having competition between the sticks and I would expect Stockdale to be first choice as I don't see him playing second fiddle to Fulop. As for Thomas, a good utility/squad player but far from a finished player and un-proven, I along with other fans were hoping for someone who can hit the ground running and step up to the plate. Along with many fans, I'm behind Jewell and I'm sure he will bring the best out of the current squad but I am very concerned by not securing all these so called transfer targets. This squad is very far from competiting for top half next season, seriously need another proven scorer like Chopra (I doubt he'll keep fit for a season) and it's obvious to everyone we need some quality in midfield and defence. With only a couple of weeks to go I have my doubts as to whether the board and Jewell will secure these kind of players. Bowyer and chops great signings but will others follow!

Any sigings are welcome at the moment as I think we need to get off PJ's back as at least he has bought some good signings in rather then the dross that idiot Keane bought in and has left us with.

Yahoo Sports are reporting that Arsenal have accepted £1m bids from numerous Championship clubs for Thomas.

Would be very happy with JET - as a previous poster has commented, he has similar attributes to Wickham. I seem to recall that he caused us all sorts of problems down the left last season. A Centre Half must then be the priority and I honestly believe Bullard will eventually sign for us. It wouldn't surprise me if Hull were trying to sack him for whatever it is he is alledged to have done!!
Can't wait for the Bristol game - COYB!!!

This has to mean the end of Fulop as Jewell has his doubts.

If Stockdale is only a loan and Fulop is to go this means we will be looking out for a new keeper as if Stockdale is re called we will down to ALB as our only keeper.

Need 2 CB a RB and a class midfielder and we have a chance of the play offs
