Jewell Apologises for Worst Defeat in Management
Jewell Apologises for Worst Defeat in Management
Saturday, 20th Aug 2011 20:26

Boss Paul Jewell apologised to fans after his worst defeat in management as nine-man Town were hammered 7-1 at Peterborough. The Blues manager refused to blame a number of questionable refereeing decisions for the severity of the loss.

Jewell said: “I think that’s worst defeat I’ve suffered as a manager. For 12 minutes I couldn’t believe what I was seeing. Well, I could believe what I was seeing because it’s happened too often, and obviously the 45 second minutes was the longest 45 minutes of my football life.

“It was damage limitation at half-time. We had nine men, they were playing with superb confidence and popping the ball around. We were just trying to keep the score down.”

The Blues boss refused to blame a number of contentious decisions by referee Graham Scott: “I’m definitely not going to hide after a 7-1 defeat and blame it on the referee.

“Someone just said that three of their goals were offside and the penalty was outside the box. That might be true, but it doesn’t hide what’s going on in our team and the defending was of shambolic proportions.

“I’ll take responsibility, I’m the manager, I pick the team, so I’m not hiding behind anything else. I’ll take it on the chin, I’ll get my tin hat on and fight through it and try and get people in there who are worthy of playing for us because there are too many people who are not good enough or worthy to play for us.”

Jewell says the results in the last week are as poor as they come: “I don’t think too many teams can have conceded 12 goals in five days and it’s hugely embarrassing and it’s really, really hurting me. But what can I do? I’ve just got to try and bounce back tomorrow and try and get people in the building.

“Some of the goals we concede are just ridiculous. The last goal sums us up. The guy’s gone through three challenges and has just brushed us off. When it becomes physical, when it comes down to the nitty-gritty, the white flag comes out.

“Whenever we come under pressure, we collapse. Anyone who has seen us over the last couple of years will have seen that as soon as it gets tough to many go missing.”

Jewell apologised to supporters and promised that he will turn things around: “I’m hugely embarrassed and I’m sorry. They’ve been fantastic for this club. I’ll take it on the chin, I know it’s down to me. I’m hurting every bit as much as they are.

“They were singing ‘we want our money back’ and they deserve it. These fans that turn up week-in and week-out, home and away, they deserve better. I think I deserve better than what I’m getting from the players as well. I’m determined that we will eventually get it right.”

Peterborough manager Darren Ferguson was unsurprisingly delighted: “It was as comfortable as it could possibly be when they went down to nine men, but even before that the most pleasing thing for me was the first half because for 20 minutes we just carved them open and got four quick goals.”

Let's not blame all of this on Jewell. It is the players' fault more than his. Most today were uttelry disgraceful!!

Everyone who disagrees, look at your own companies and see who is to blame for the bad moments. Everyone has a part to play!

No excuses though, today was shocking on all parts!!

Let's all just be honest with eachother for one minute, we are at rock bottom and it aint going to change, believe that.

I tell you now there is not a decent player in the country who will want to sign for this club after seeing that dross tonight.

Time for a reality check, we are not going to be challenging for the play off's, this season or seasons to come, so take off the rose tinted glasses and get used to losing, we are a sad sad team.

Everyone got excited by Jewell, but the hate will start shortly it always does at this club, the knives will come out, people believe we have a right to be challenging, we dont and the problem cant be fixed with money and new signings.

Clubs like Southampton, Peterborough have belief, they have winning mentalities and players who have something to prove, look at Paul Taylor, these are the kind of players our club needs to be buying, not dross like Ellington & Co, we really are in a bad bad way.

The only highlight for me was my decision not to renew season tickets, in the current economic climate, it was the best thing I have ever done.

Dont give me any crap about being a part time supporter etc etc etc, I have put up with poor football for too long now, I get more excitment paying to watch Hadleigh United in the Ridgeons league!!

This club is on a downward spiral, we are spineless, and have nothing, regardless of the 2 being sent off we were in for a beating today, and give credit to Peterborough their spirit and quality of play was too much.

I will wait for the cries for Jewell out, he needs years to rebuild our team, hope you all have a lot of patience, i think a taste of League 1 might be needed to get this club back on track.

As shocking as our performance was the ref had just as a shocking game, he should at least be questioned by the powers that be !

Relegation is a real threat I'm afraid !

We had no bite, no determination, and no effort to win the game throughout. We looked broken from the start. Undoubtedly we were robbed by some refeering decisions, but when it's not going your way, its not going your way

Some people in this club dont want to stand up and be counted. I was apalled by Smith, shocking player! get rid of him! leadbitter, awful - how he's our captain i dont know!

DOPEY DELANEY in there too, its a shambles! i expect two new cb's for the next game, ingimarsson was a bad signing too, HES ALWAYS INJURED.

im young, and never in my years of watching ipswich have i seen them that bad. Stockdale showed me glimpses of class however, and i really felt for him having such pooor defenders stood in front of him.! yes, its early days, but now we find ourselves chasing down those at the top.

Some of you on here pay very good money and its not acceptable!

PJ thinks it will be easier to sign players on loan, but who would want to come. PJ bought the players, its his team and he must take the blame. Utter humiliation has been dealt to the supporters of this club, the players are not fit to wear the shirt. Leeds fans must be rubbing there hands, nice place to play at Portman Road, easy three pionts and the best meat pies in the Championship, sorry 2nd div.

New blood what is he talking about

We have 8 new players in the side so he must have looked if they were the type of player that would fight for the club

Jewell is about to do to us what he did to Derby

Thank goodness for Stockdale tonight other wise it could have been 12-1.Shocking referee decisions tonight 3 goals were offside, Lee Martin actually won the ball but it had already gone out but he was sent off.Although Tommy Smiths offence was a sending off it was clearly not a penalty as the foul was outside the box. The only way we are heading atm is league 1 not The Premiership.

PJ is starting to put Roy K in a different light, out of the frying pan & into the fire!!! What do the statistics tell us now, how do they compare?

Remember the first game of the season. We had a defender.

We will get two defenders in September and then we will be OK, more than OK.

We need a leader and that person probably a CD needs to be the captain.

The problem is that until then we will ship shed loads of goals.

A dark, dark day! If I wasn't so angry and humiliated I could actually laugh. Doesn't seem real life and couldn't believe what I witnessed!! I actually feel sorry for tommy smith - it's not his fault he's thought of as a player who us good enough. The truth is he's simply not!

Well at least you see plenty of goals watching us at the moment.......Please, Please sign a right back and two new centre backs. Once you have solved that problem and we need to start by going in games and keeping clean sheets, once that is cracked for goodness sake get a creative midfield and someone through the middle with pace.
Would someone please come and pick up Delaney, Leadbitter, Smith (please retire) Ainsley, Edwards and any of the other flumps and drop them off in a far away land!!!!!!!!
Yes you cant blame the officals but you can rest assure that all 3 will be seriously down marked for that performance, bet they get taken off their games next week,

Goes without saying it was a shambles. We haven't had a defence this bad in decades.

Edwards is not a full back - too lightweight in a challenge and poor at tracking.

Ainsley - far too inexperienced letting players drift off him, not physical enough and didn't do many of the basics right a defender needs to do like ensuring the ball or the man are taken care of.

Delaney - Carried by Mcauley and now completely exposed. He needs to get the bit between the teeth and start smashing strikers about otherwise he may as well do one.

Leadbitter - a disgrace and shouldn't play for the club again. Only strength he has as a midfielder is retaining possession and it's no way near enough. He couldn't even do that today. Not great in defence, not great going forward, weak in a tackle, no physical presence, no range of passing, poor at set pieces, not vocal enough - what is the point in keeping him!? Sell him to pompey now...

Martin - doesn't track back well enough to allow Cresswell to get forward. Cresswell was exposed far too much by a very, very average David Little.

No playmaker in the middle which if we don't get soon, Chopra may as well sit on the bench!!

In short we need:

1 - Back-up Keeper
2 - Experienced right back - Don't care who but spend top money on them
3 - Experienced Centre Back -Don't care who but spend top money on them
4 - Good promising lower league Centre back who can play at right back - another good find like Cresswell
5 - Playmaker in the middle - Jimmy Bullard
6 - Another Striker to partner Chopra - Jordan Rhodes

...and we need them all now!

Even more embarrassing than the 9-0 (that was Manchester United, this was Peterborough United). Agree with everybody saying we need 2 cb's and 1 rb plus a box to box midfielder. Trouble is premier teams won't let anybody go until last day of the window and anybody good enough to play in the championship is already here. Do we still have scouts checking out the foreign leagues? My only hope is that this is the turning point (but it's a very small hope)

POSITIVES
Stockdale played really well. How many times did he make fantastic saves? Time and time again.
NEGATIVES
Leadbitter- did he actually play? Dreadful. Ainsley and Delaney was even worse than Smith and Delaney. Smith, Ainsley and Delaney are not fit to wear their shirts. The rest of the team? Midfield- where was the helping of the defence? Tomlin was often on his own against Delaney and Ainsley. 3 players were needed to help (Ainsley and Delaney are simply not good enough). The whole team needs to defend as a unit. Lost for words about how bad this is. Said before the season started that we are heading for relegation.

I was there with the only ones from Ipswich who did. As the players never. We were lucky to go 1 up. And then we showed our shambolic defending if that's what it is. 7-1 it's against Peterborough! Leadbitter should never wear the armband again. Quiet. Non motivational and clearly not good enough. We need a team and fast. Felt sorry for chops. No service apart from long high no hope balls. But it's not a great selling point to other players we want to sign. Come here we concede 12 in 2 games and are 20th in the league. I still live in hope as it's still very early. But jewell will have to sweet talk and Evans will have to have a big wallet for this to improve. Stand up and be counted. That's all us fans wanted not scared lost no hopers.

I am 37 years old and a town fan of 30 years and tonight is the lowest I have felt. The whole structure of the club is wrong,we have always brought through good young talent and moulded them into players, nowadays we think the solution is to bin the young players and bring in fat cat ex prem players,It does not work, if you look at our two most successful managers sir bobby and George, they had the same philosophy, make the players you have got better and build a team,I think I am right in saying sir bobby only brought around 10 players in all the time he was at portman

They should also give a weeks wages to a local charity, after all apart from 15mins or so against soton, they haven't earned a penny this week.

My god it's really depressing reading these posts - as mentioned it might take a long long time sorting this team out, humiliated by 2 ex-league 1 teams! - says it all :(

Simply the worst performance I have ever seen from Town, utterly humiliating, please god we have hit rock bottom and the only way is up.
Please, please, please can we finally get some new players in and finally sort out the defence..! we have been screaming for this to happen for as long as I can remember but why does it take so long to be sorted out..??

27th August leeds at home would like a point but cant see it.10th september draw away at blackpool, after a 13 day break, a regroup , new faces after the window closes, all with at least a week to know exactly what Paul jewell wants from them then we should never be beaten like this again if we lose it is time to consider paul jewells position and for us the fans to seriously consider the fact that we could well be seeing 1st division football at portman road before we see premiership and if that is what it takes then so be it.

I'm only glad I'm away on holiday this week - sadly I'll be back for the Leeds match. I only hope that ME was there to watch and see what a shambles we are and that he'll insert some real money into the club as we desparately need a quality back 4 & midfield
