Jewell Slams Martin's Disciplinary Record
Jewell Slams Martin's Disciplinary Record
Tuesday, 23rd Aug 2011 12:34

Boss Paul Jewell has hit out at midfielder Lee Martin for his disciplinary record which has seen him pick up three suspensions since the change of manager at Portman Road in January. The former Manchester United man has been training with the reserves since being sent off for a reckless, if perhaps not actually illicit, challenge at Peterborough on Saturday.

Jewell said: “He’s got to earn the right to start training with the first team again because I’ve had enough with his disciplinary record. It’s not as if he’s the most battle-hardened midfielder, is it?

“I don’t mind players getting booked for honest challenges, but Lee’s are always silly and petty. I’ve had enough of that nonsense.

“Whether his was actually a sending off is debatable, but he’s given the referee the opportunity to do it.

“It was not a very mature tackle and the fact that he got clapped off afterwards really winds me up.

“Lee is a player who has done well for me, but he missed too many games for me last season due to indiscipline and now he’s going to miss another three games.”

Last season Martin was booked 11 times and sent off for a rash challenge at Bristol City. The 24-year-old faces a three-game ban for his latest dismissal.

I understand Jewells stance on this. However, WHY ARE WE NOT APPEALING IT? it was not a red card challenge.

Really like Jewell. You never hear Alex Ferguson criticising his players in public though.

i think jewell has done a good job with some signings so far but this is a ridiculous decision, just because he was showing passion and willing to track back, it wasnt a red card and also who wouldnt be annoyed at being 4-1 down at half time with 2 cardboard cut outs at the back. At least this shows he cared. not going to help the kids confidence and just at a time that he was looking to fulfil some of his potential.

I think if this was for Saturday and ONLY Saturday then possibly a tad harsh but is isn't. It's because of his disciplinary record since PJ has been here. I don't know and can only presume that he would've been told to watch himself or the club would discipline him. He didn't. The club disciplined him. Simple.

Should it be done in public...debatable. I can see the argument against this but for me I don't think he'd do it to every player, but then again other players may take a telling.

I can think of several players I would have training with the reserves ahead of Martin after the last couple of games frankly!

Excellent post ITFCCOYB

PJ resurrected Martins career and gave him an opportunity to show his worth to the team.

At that point in the game we just needed to hold on for two minutes until half time to regroup. 4-1 would be a difficult score to chase with 11 men, but effectively there was no way back with 10 men. A needless challenge, seen by the referee for exactly what it was a frustrated lunge -the ref had probably even made his mind up that it was a red card before the contact was made. Jon Stead got sent off at Palace a couple of seasons ago for a similar frustrating challenge which won him the ball just after he had lost it and he thought he had been fouled. The ref's read the players body language (and are almost waiting to produce the red card) and this often influences them more than the final contact.

Wingers will often loose the ball, thats fair enough but its about how they respond. A winger who can't read the game and shows such naivety in tracking back in headless chicken mode in my view is likely to be a liability. If I honestly thought LM was capable of scoring eight or nine goals for us in a season in addition to providing countless assists I might just not consider him to be a luxury player.

And at 24 he should be showing his full potential as a player, he really is no longer a kid.

I think his time as a first team player has probably run its course.

How Jewell disciplines his players is up to him - but to air it in public in something else. Is he so desperate to point the finger that he has to start isolating players?

Jewell needs to stop promoting lost causes (I'm starting to think he'll have a nervous breakdown if he doesn't sign Bullard) and shouldn't criticise any other player individually in the press. Hearing soundbites from him is getting tiresome now as it doesn't appear to be improving matters. Fingers crossed things will get better very soon.

if you are going to go in with a tackle like that at least do it where it matters, not on the touch line - he's a headless chicken

Is he referring to Town fans who clapped Martin?

daleyitfc. what a ridiculous argument? u did ur refs exam in 1994, the rules have changed vastly since then. can only assume you are not an active ref or youd know that. no tackle from behind is allowed even if you win the ball. it still a free kick. and neway this wasnt a tackle from behind neway, just a reckless challenge. while as ive said b4 i do feel red was harsh, you have to take into account his body language as he ran back to make the challenge. my feeling is the ref felt there was intent in the challenge, & that why it was red, not yellow

If PJ is fed up of his players then I don't blame him. He's putting up with poor effort and poor ability and poor discipline. Of course some of this is his fault but if we saw the same things with Keane I think that suggests that it started with Keane, Jewell is suffering for the mess we've become and wondering what he signed himself up for!

As for claims that other top managers don't do this... Manchini is freezing out Adebayor, anyone remember Fergusen and Beckham and the boot? Manchini again has moaned about Tevez AND Balotelli on numerous occasions (the substitution for the backheel in the US is not that different). I'm sure if I could be bothered to research it you could find lots of arguments, fall outs, dropping to the reserves and the like which have been publicised by the manager or otherwise. A public embarrassment could be what Martin needs if his discipline is that poor. We don't see what happens on the training ground either, maybe Jewell dealt with him quietly first and he showed a bad attitude?

As for jas0999, just stop. Defending Jewell does not make me a 'PJ lover' I once defended Keane too. I love this club, though, and by sacking another manager at such an early stage when so much more could happen is going to bring us nothing but trouble. Fact. How about you get off of people's backs just because they don't share the same opinion as you. If we're bottom at Christmas you can 'I told you so' as much as you like and everyone will agree with you.
