Jewell Slams Martin's Disciplinary Record
Jewell Slams Martin's Disciplinary Record
Tuesday, 23rd Aug 2011 12:34

Boss Paul Jewell has hit out at midfielder Lee Martin for his disciplinary record which has seen him pick up three suspensions since the change of manager at Portman Road in January. The former Manchester United man has been training with the reserves since being sent off for a reckless, if perhaps not actually illicit, challenge at Peterborough on Saturday.

Jewell said: “He’s got to earn the right to start training with the first team again because I’ve had enough with his disciplinary record. It’s not as if he’s the most battle-hardened midfielder, is it?

“I don’t mind players getting booked for honest challenges, but Lee’s are always silly and petty. I’ve had enough of that nonsense.

“Whether his was actually a sending off is debatable, but he’s given the referee the opportunity to do it.

“It was not a very mature tackle and the fact that he got clapped off afterwards really winds me up.

“Lee is a player who has done well for me, but he missed too many games for me last season due to indiscipline and now he’s going to miss another three games.”

Last season Martin was booked 11 times and sent off for a rash challenge at Bristol City. The 24-year-old faces a three-game ban for his latest dismissal.

He has got to be joking? It was not a red card, a yellow at worst. I hope we are going to appeal it?

As much as I dislike Martin as a player (no end product, rarely actually beats someone and has about as much strength in his tackle as a 96 year man who cant find his viagra) I am finding Jewell attaking the players a little worrying. No doubt they have underperformed but PJ picks the team and sets up the tactics and I think he would be better off holstering his blame machine gun and concentrate on training and selecting players to play in their natural positions.

Don't air your dirty linen in public. Pentulant comments from PJ and not at all what I'd come to expect from him.

Some of you need to read up on how the appeals system works.

As much as I feel LM is growing into the player that Keane was so eager to bring here, 11 yellows and a red last season is shocking, I agree wih PJ that the majority are for petty incidents and that is something which has to be stamped out of his game. Reacting out of frustration, arguing with the ref and getting yourself banned not only affects the team but the fans also, especially fans that have been so welcoming since returning from a loan in league 1 (where he failed to set the world alight) I like LM, pre season he was one of the better players and against Bristol City was starting to look like he was worth the money we paid! Sort it out Lee, your red on Saturday was debatable but was avoidable and now were going to miss you when we need you most! I have to say bringing this into the public eye was possibly not PJs smartest move but if it helps improve LMs disciplinery record and makes him appreciate his place in the team then good move. COYB

Let's put him out on loan again, he's not that good.

I'm afraid I agree with Jewell. See Martin's challenge at Ashton Gate last season. Not in an area of the pitch where Bristol City could do us any damage but gave the referee little option but to show a red. We paid dearly for being down to 10 men on Saturday, and you could argue that having Martin suspended for the Norwich game didn't help.

Awww the poor ickle bitty player is hard done by, life is so unfair...sob sob bl00dy sob....Some of you need to grow a spine. PJ said it isn't for this one tackle but his whole disciplinary record since he's been there. If a player is spending time suspended he is doing the team no good. PJ is trying to correct it and instead of sitting there crying for a player you should support the manager in what he is trying to do. If Martin is sobbing about training with the reserves then I'll say to PJ sell him. We don't need wimpy self absorbed nancy boy players. We want players to stand up and be counted. Martin needs to show this. Good one PJ, let's get these attitudes right....

I can also understand PJ's point to a degree...but singling out martin is wrong, smith was also dismissed and that probably caused more damage! I would hope that the first team training sessions are very quiet this week with the team working so hard (to put right saturdays result) that they have no time to talk...smith, leadbitter, ainsley and edwards should also be training with the reserves!!!

For the majority of fans that write comments on this website I have total respect for you. Whether it is a negative or positive post they still have substance and thought but for the majority of you mugs that love jewell, then hate jewell and then lose respect for him and then whatever you have against or for himyou are a bunch of clowns. You would think we were already relegated!

It's not great granted but for you to turn so quickly is a disgarce and you should be ashamed of yourself.

If you actually read the article you would see that this is a long standing problem with LM. Read the article -

“Whether his was actually a sending off is debatable, but he's given the referee the opportunity to do it.

“It was not a very mature tackle and the fact that he got clapped off afterwards really winds me up.

The clowns that clapped him off should be ashamed of themselves, it was a stupid, frustrated challenge and when we needed calm heads on the pitch, he lost his.

Grow up the lot of you, you are pathetic.

And for those wanting their money back, if it is about money don't bother turning up. If you want to win the lottery you have to buy a ticket. I don't ask for money back when I don't win - jokers the lot of ya.

If ythey were to give any money back it should go to a good cause/charity

Your clutching at straws Mr Jewel,it wasnt a foul so why punish one of your better players since you came to the club instead of appealing a stupid decission by the worst ref Ive ever seen in action.

Just for the record Mr Jewell.....not everyone was clapping him off. I had my head in my hands as I couldnt believe what I was seeing with Town being 4-1 down and then a man light! Perhaps Lee Martin might actually "man-up" now and get on the weights. Im sure he lost the ball in the lead up to his sending off anyway!

i'm all for the club disciplining him and smith but why does LM need to be singled out for public shaming, it could be argued it was an honest but misguided attempt to win the ball. Far more disturbing is the disgraceful peformance of the captain and the fact he went into hiding, if anyone needs to 'man up' its leadbitter. not heard a peep from the club about his performance or a single word from the man himself.

I'm starting to think PJ isnt the manager I was thought he was. This should have been kept in-house & to comment on the fans clapping off LM doesn't help either. He's an experienced manager who really should know better & I think we will see how good or bad he is in the next few months(I really hope good).

I'll tell you why he got clapped off Jewell, it's because he showed a bit of fight and bollocks when too many around him couldn't give a toss. He always has been willing to get stuck in and fans appreciate that. The fact it didn't deserve a red has everything to do with it. It was a fair and honest tackle.

the thing is 5 or 6 years ago, lee martin's tackle wouldnt of even been a free kick, he clearly got the ball...it was just a firm fair challenge, its not as if he went in two footed at knee height, the ball was there to be one, but also i can see where PJ is coming from, he does do a lot of wreckless thoughtless tackles, althugh he shouldnt of had to be that far back if the defense checked the run.........again its all down to poor defending and not working together as a team, it will take a while to sort it, but i believe PJ has the capabilty of doing so

To me this is disgraceful. Unbelievable to be honest.

Jewell should not be slating Martin he should be slating the football league for allowing the ref and linesmen we had on Saturday to officiate a football match. Why the effing hell doesnt he appeal the red card, he won the ball ffs! I missed the game and watched it on delay and I had heard it was harsh but when I saw it I couldn't believe it!! What pissed me off almost as much as the ref pulling out a red card was the fact that the lino didn't give anything when the incident was literally right infront of him....until the ref comes running over all dramatic; oh yer course now I have to put my flag up to make it seem like I saw it the same way as my buddy, I won't bother telling him that it wasn't a foul let alone a red bloody card!

Are we not allowed to tackle anymore, who cares if he 'lunged in'?! Thats how classics sliding tackles are meant to be executed. The player got straight up without a scratch and still the ref thinks it was a sending off offense? Worst refereeing delusion I've seen for some time.

As for Jewell dumping Martin in the reserves, shades of Keane, though atleast he wouldn't do this for someone making a good tackle. When we see maybe Martin starting an attack but then he gets tackled, runs back at the player and slides in to take ball and man we love it! Whats wrong with a bit of aggression?!!!! Thats part of Martins game and we love it. Whats he going to now when he gets a chance to make a good tackle, he'll stand off and then the boss will slam him for not putting the effort it!

I have rarely if not not never really criticized Jewell but for this I have to, its just unbelievable. Putting a solid first team player in the reserves for showing commitment and a bit of aggression and fight?

PJ, you need to see and understand that tackle at the Posh more. Sky Sports slowed it right down and put many angles on the tackle. Martin won the ball fair as fair, let him off this one. Both of these red cards we saw on saturday weren't straight reds. Especially as the linesman next to Martin's tackle thought there was nothing wrong, only when the referee started running over with the red card did the assistant frantically wave his flag pointing ''Definite foul, ref''. I am currently not liking PJ and his management / dealing with things at the moment. Signings 10/10. Getting JB & talking to the board about finances 1/10. Dealing with players & tactics 2/10. You know where the door is PJ, we will give you another chance like we do with all of our managers but something has to change and it needs to change fast.

For goodness sake cant half of you read? No its all selective reading isnt it, lets pick out all the bad points.... Jewell has said it is he general discipline record which he questions, a record that a strong centre midfielder like Norris could possibly expect with the amount of tackles put in. Martin is a winger, he is very poor at tackling doesnt do it enough and when he does it normally results in a card of some colour each and every time. Clearly not good enough. I think Lee Martin thinks he is better than what he is coming from a Man U background he does seem to flounce around. Whilst he has shown vast improvement under Jewell, who knows what goes on behind the scenes, maybe he is very ill disciplined there too. He has a pedigree background cost us fortune and should no better. As for blaming Tommy Smith, the guy is like a duck out of water, he is not ill disciplined he is just not in a good place right now and if he was made an example of it would totally destroy what little is left. Leadboots maybe....... rant over.

PJ other day saying all the team needs to defend better then a player gets slammed for bein sent off which is debatable whether it was a red card or not. As for training with reserves thats ridiculous whats that gonna show u get sent off u train with reserves for few weeks. Well if that case no player gonna want to go in heavy or any 50-50 challenges but yet he wants alk team to defend better n that invovles tackles. Look at Paul Scholes disciplinary record n he never got punhished by fergie like this

According to the laws of the game, a freekick is awarded if a tackle is made in a manner considered by the referee to be careless, reckless or using excessive force.

"Careless" means that the player has shown a lack of attention or consideration when making a challenge or that he acted without precaution. No further disciplinary sanction is needed if a foul is judged to be careless.

"Reckless" means that the player has acted with complete disregard to the danger to, or consequences for, his opponent. A player who plays in a reckless manner must be cautioned.

Lastly, "using excessive force" means that the player has far exceeded the necessary use of force and is in danger of injuring his opponent. A player who uses excessive force must be sent off.

In my opinion, using these definitions, the tackle on Saturday was not even careless, let alone reckless. Martin's leading foot stayed on the ground the whole time and made full contact with the stationary ball - it was a well-timed sliding tackle.

I believe Jewell's frustration comes from the fact that there was no need to make such a tackle at that time. The Ipswich goal was not under threat and it would have been sufficient for Martin to have stayed on his feet and either made a tackle or blocked the Peterborough player's progress. By sliding in, he left himself at the mercy of the referee's interpretation, which was no doubt swayed by the nearby crowd's reaction, and on this occasion he was unfortunately sent off.

I liked the bit about "he got clapped off". you have to ask yourself do you want players to get stuck in or roll over.... Sorry we did get rolled over but only by 7 this time. Get a grip and don't follow the Keane school of football management..

It doesnt work

Diving in on the touchline of a player going nowhere does not show passion it shows stupidity and until these big name charlie wannabees grow up and start earning their money more i think Jewell is correct .Jewell has shown faith in Martin and brought him on well, otherwise he would still be playing a league lower football
