Jewell: More Signings to Come
Jewell: More Signings to Come
Friday, 26th Aug 2011 08:36

Town boss Paul Jewell is still looking for more new recruits despite already adding 11 players to his squad this summer. The signings of Jimmy Bullard and Daryl Murphy were confirmed yesterday, while the paperwork making Ibrahima Sonko a Blue is set to be rubber-stamped this morning.

Jewell says there could be further additions either before the transfer window closes next Wednesday or on a loan basis after that: “I don’t think that’s the end of us. That’s 11 new players, a huge turnover and that’s another reason why it will take time for us to get right. It’s not going to happen overnight.

“Deadline day is less important for us than it is for the Premier League teams because we can still loan players seven days after it closes, so we could get players in on loan for the Blackpool game.”

The Blues manager confirmed that he has spoken to Stoke about two players with defender Danny Collins again claimed to be a £700,000 target by one of today’s papers. The other Potters player is almost certainly Ryan Shotton.

Jewell says that Stoke, in common with other Premier League clubs, are loath to let players move on until the transfer window closes, so it may be that one of the duo could come in during the week before Town’s trip to Bloomfield Road.

The Town boss says this week’s sudden influx of signings isn’t a knee-jerk reaction to Saturday’s hammering at Peterborough: “It’s not as if we’ve bought players because we got beaten 7-1, we were looking to sign players when we beat Bristol City 3-0.

“It’s a bit like London buses, they came along very quickly and quietly. The week has been no different in terms of being on the phone, it’s just that some things have fallen into place for us.”

Jewell realises that getting his signings to gel will take time but has always said turning Town into a competitive side would be a long-term task: “It’s not going to be easy but, having said that, if you don’t think the players that were already here are good enough, there’s no point in sticking with them.

“I think some of the results we’ve had this season show that there are certain areas where we are lacking, so we’ve got to try to improve the squad.”

One area where the Liverpudlian is certainly still looking to make a further signing is in goal with first choice David Stockdale subject to a 24-hour recall to Fulham and with Márton Fülöp having moved to West Brom on a free transfer earlier in the month.

Former Blue Richard Wright is still training with the squad and was in goal for the reserves in Monday’s behind-closed-doors friendly against Colchester, but Jewell says that at the moment that’s as far as things go: “Richard only lives around the corner, so he’s been training here and he played in the reserve game the other day because we didn’t want to risk Arran Lee-Barrett.

“He’s good experience for the young players, he’s got a good voice and he’s here training keeping fit, but things might change.

“We are on the look-out for another goalkeeper, a young one to take us forward in the future because Stocky might be called back at any time.

“We are aware of the situation where we’ve got Arran and we might have Richard as back-up, but in the long-term we need another young goalkeeper to take us forward and that search is continuing.”

What is up with people soooo much negativaty........like a pack of hyenas ready to pounce on the first failure. PJ is the man for the job. This time last year we played coventry and got embarrassed then QPR after a few good results i could see that we were in a bad situation and was calling for Queenos head this year we are in the same position but unlike Queeno in Jewell i trust. Sing your hearts out and lets get the Sir Bobby Rocking, thats some of the reason Why Jimmy came back>>>>>>>US THE FANS.

Falling into the classic trap of trying to buy success (transfer fees and wages). Only way for sustainable success is to build a team, unless the signings are top drawer - Town's signings are generally mediocre at best.

Follow the Norwich way - not the failed Evans/Clegg way.

What about Shane Supple? He is a good young keeper.

IMO defence may be nearly sorted. Sonko has signed and according to reports deals been done with Roberge to join in Jan. calvo could be signed as temp cover until then (sonko, delaney, smith, ingimmarsson, calvo is enough until roberge joins)
goalkeeper is badly needed-young and talented
midfield is better, but expecting bullard to create everything is a bit much. might need 1 more here.
strikers we have in abundance, need to send priskin out on loan.

Still think we're going to continue to struggle defensively until we bring in a right-back...Nosworthy?

@beerhelps...it's ME's money not yours so why are you quibbling? I think ME and SC and PJ all deserve thanks for making the changes.

Eleven signings so far and more to come...

If you leave a monkey alone with a typewriter for long enough, it'll eventually write something worthwhile...

Sigh...

All postive stuff as long as they're the right ones! Think Scotland and Priskin will go and Delaney was linked with a loan to Barnsley? Gotta give Paul Jewellio the time to get the squad balanced and all players 'bedded in'. Notice the avoidance of the word gel in the above sentence ;)

Well done Marcus and 100% behind you blandford boy. Marcus has proved his commitment to this club, because if I were him and read some of this stuff about me, I would be gone tomorrow.

Still a little worried about Saturday. No Bullard, Bowyer, Ingimarsson. That means Delaney plays. Perhaps Kennedy and Drury in midfield? Lets not get too excited yet!

This is not the way to assemble a promotion winning side. With a week to go it's all desperate 'flying by the seat of your pants' stuff.

This is going to end in tears.

PJ said it went wrong at Derby because he tried to do things too quickly. I think he wanted to keep most of the existing team at ITFC and make gradual changes. However, best players left and he had to replace whole team. Not his fault he couldn't find decent CB - and is still struggling.

Now we have a great midfield and strikeforce, just need to sort the defence out Marko Suler looks good and maybe another centre back after him and rb. Maybe sign Tim Krul from Newcastle if Rob Elliot moves there, if not sign Elliot or Lewis

Should pay out some money and sign Scott Loach. The guy has said he really wants to play for us....

Stockdale
Edwards Sonko Kennedy Cresswell
Murphy Bullard Andrews Drury
Jet Chopra

Should do a fair job on Leeds ( if D'Urso should manage to play fair for a change ! ) , would be better with Ingi and Bowyer to finish them off !

Don't normally respond directly in reply to another post however - Beerhelps as you say we have lost some of our best players of last season for nothing, you also pointed out that we finished in the bottom half of the table. So I am guessing you will agree that our best players last year were not good enough. As for not receiving money for them, surely ME is the only one who has suffered as a result? My comments were based on what has happened over the last few months - as I, like many, are trying to forget the RK era.

Call me a cynic but: "if you don't think the players that were already here are good enough, there's no point in sticking with them" and clearly there is no one in the coaching staff with the ability to work with the players to improve individual aspects of their game.

Unless I've missed something on here, Wiki list Richard Wright in number shirt for us. And yes I know it's not too reliable
