Jewell: Location Can Hit Loans
Jewell: Location Can Hit Loans
Tuesday, 6th Sep 2011 08:47

Boss Paul Jewell says Town’s location slightly off the beaten track affects the club’s ability to make loan signings, echoing comments made by his predecessors Jim Magilton and Roy Keane. But the current Blues manager says that once players get to the club and have a look around, they like what they see.

Jewell says that with plenty of Championship sides chasing the same loanees — including current target Danny Collins — the Blues are sometimes up against it with players often unwilling to move too far away from their permanent homes: “We are up against geography a little bit, I know that has always been an argument.

“Once we get them here, I think it surprises a lot of people. It certainly has surprised a lot of people that we have got in over the summer.

“Everyone knows Ipswich is a good club, but even I didn’t realise what a great club it is until I got here. I am excited every day when I walk through the doors.”

The Blues manager says he will continue to look to build on the 11 signings he made before the window closed: “We would like to always improve on what we got and if there is something out there we think will suit us and we can afford, we’ll try and do it.

“And we have seven away on international duty and if they come back injured, it might change my plans.”

Football League clubs can bring players in on 'emergency' loans of up to 93 days from Thursday.

Meanwhile, former boss Keane is reported to have failed to show for a meeting with the Icelandic FA in Reykjavik. Keane, who is amongst those in the running for the role of Iceland’s national manager, is due to watch their home Euro 2012 qualifier against Cyprus tonight. Iceland's FA have neither confirmed nor denied their interest in Keane.

Elsewhere, ex-Blue Kevin Lisbie, released at the end of last season, is still a free agent. The 32-year-old, who is set to train with a Championship side this week, says he turned down offers from League Two clubs earlier in the summer: "I spoke with both Gillingham and Southend at the beginning of pre-season and they were both interested in offering me something, but I'd prefer to play at a higher level, to be honest.

"I feel that dropping down to League Two would be a massive jump having played in the Championship last season [on loan at Millwall].

"I'm quite fit and I would like to leave the option of playing in either the Championship or League One open as long as possible really.”

Not too bothered about loans, except Gio!

I quite like Sonko and Delaney at the back, let's give them a run of games!

Ipswich Town is the centre of the universe, not a backwater like Liverpool, Mr Jewell. You need to get your thinking re-aligned. De-Scouse yourself. Immediately.

Talking of location, why don't we look to Holland? There's a ferry down the road! If a dutch player moved to England on loan then location wise we are ideal!

Viljoen, Thijssen, Muhren, Uhlenbeek, Wilnis, Petta, Reuser, Balkestein and nearly Ed De Goey!

We need to make Haarlem our feeder club!

Oh don't start on all that nonsense again - I really don't want to hear it.
It's about time people learned that football does exist outside London and the North West.

If they are put off that easily without looking into detail they sound like they have the mentality of a loser and not what we are looking for.

Just think how Boro must struggle then!

i think the location argument is a bit lame really. We are only 75-ish miles from London and can be easily reached by road from elsewhere in the country. Besides, if a player is really interested in getting playing time, surely he will make the effort to come to ITFC. Norwich is more of a "backwater" than Ipswich and they didn't do too badly with loan signings a couple of years ago.

Sorry but have to disagree with jewell, there plenty of positives for our clubs location, for example not far from stansted airport or even London, quietish area means players can get on with football without too many distractions eg. Dos santos!

“Once we get them here, I think it surprises a lot of people. It certainly has surprised a lot of people that we have got in over the summer"

That would be because they didn't see the promotional video on itfc.co.uk that sells the club to prospective corporate sponsors/box holders, players and loanees, you know, the type that most corporations would have as a matter of course!

How can loaction be a problem? as soon as you hit the A12 from Ipswich, the next stop is a set of traffic lights near Harold Wood which comes under the London Borough of Havering... I have never had a problem getting to and from Ipswich - My only problem is the more east I go up the A12, the poorer reception is on Radio 5 live...

Another in a long stream of excuses from the scouser.
All summer he could have strengthened our weakest department, but he chose not to do so except for signing a 34 year old injury prone Icelander, although Cresswell does look a prospect. That leaves us with Tommy Smith who is going backwards, literally, and Delaney who is up there with the worst players ever to play for Ipswich as the lynchoins of our defebce before making a opanic signing in Sonko who has the mobility of the Electric House.

Got nothing to do with being "off the beaten track"
Got plenty to do with being "beaten" 7-1 by relegation candidates.

Sorry pazelle but not possible to make Haarlem our feeder club as they went out of business in January 2010. Only have a few amateur sides in Haarlem now.

Plenty of other clubs over here to choose from....Telstar are in Ijmuiden which isn't far away. They are in the Eerste Divisie (their version of the championship where both FC Eindhoven & Den Bosch play). Btw, for those that came over for the pre-season games, FC Eindhoven are currently top, played 4 won 4!

I'll happily become the ITFC scout over here!

I wonder if players using this as an excuse are really just after an easy life not to far from their family and friends and place this above actually playing. We want players who want to play and want to play for Ipswich ala Jimmy Bullard,Sonko and Cresswell,So if a player wants to use our position on the map as an exscuse ok then fine, jog on,their loss,Next please.

Guys, we are talking of football players here, some of which won't run two yards to collect a ball, isn't that right Mr. Lisbie ?

Terrible location a whole hour from London !!
Playing 4-5-1 , signing mates and has beens , complaining about location - sounds familiar ..... is that stubble I see in the photo ?
Our location is a positive for me , it should be used to attract players .
Sunderland have no problem attracting players , Anyone been there?

I think he does have a point, a lot of players would be put off by having to travel across the country to play for a team for a season. It's not like it's a permanent transfer where the player can just move house, this is a loan we're talking about.

This old nutmeg! As has been said - look at the South East and Holland more then. And have a plan in May and deliver it not have to rely on panic buys and loans (unless they are genuinely with a view to becoming permanent - Andrews?). And play the players you have - I happen to know O'Connor turned down loan to Hereford at last minute last season telling them "I didn't know how far away it was". So, there's one player at least who likes Ipswich SO GIVE HIM A CHANCE MR JEWELL! grrrrrrrrrrrrrr

The fact is that Ipswich is not the nearest Championship club to any Premiership club except Norwich, and we're hardly likely to take any of their players on loan.

However, the ones who can be bothered to relocate temporarily or travel to us on a frequent basis are also likely to be the ones with the right attitude in other areas, e.g. putting in a decent shift on the pitch.
