Jewell Confident He Will Be Given Time
Jewell Confident He Will Be Given Time
Wednesday, 21st Sep 2011 12:11

Blues boss Paul Jewell is confident that club owner Marcus Evans will give him the time required to build a successful team at Portman Road. The Town manager says he has developed a good rapport with Evans since his appointment in January.

Jewell said: “I think I’ve maybe got more of a relationship with the owner than perhaps Jim and Roy had. We involve one another when making decisions and I’ve got the confidence that I’ve got a long-term objective here.

“If at the end of the day that doesn’t work out, it doesn’t work out, but I think the owner sees the plan and the long-term objective exactly the way I see it."

The Blues boss says the pair talk daily: “It’s not as if he’s out every two minutes backing me. Obviously he’s a very private and quiet man, but we speak on the phone regularly, two or three times a day, and I think that’s an important dialogue to have going on.

“I think we’ve got good players, it’s a fantastic football club with great supporters. The only thing that hasn’t been firing on all cylinders is the team, and it’s my job behind the scenes to get it right.

“I’ve been here eight months now and given a fair crack at it, I’m 100% convinced that I’ll get it right.”

Meanwhile, Jewell feels that last week’s Aaron Cresswell compensation tribunal wasn’t the best use of a day, even if the Blues came out of it with what appears to be an excellent deal: “I have to say four hours sat around a table going backwards and forwards was a waste of everybody’s time.

“I think Cressy is going to be a good player for us. Since he’s come here he’s improved an awful lot but he’s still got a long way to go, but we’re pleased with him.

“There have to be more of the likes of Cresswell out there and it’s our aim to get players like that to add to what we’ve got. It’s important to get young players.

“Cressy loves Ipswich, he loves coming here. It’s a big step up for him but he’s taken to it well after a shaky start, and that’s the type of player that we want.”

England U21 coach Stuart Pearce is reported to have been at Monday's game against Coventry and to have asked about Cresswell. However, the Birkenhead youngster, who turned 21 in December last year, is too old to play for Pearce's side.

Elsewhere, midfielder Andy Drury says he feels he wasn’t really given the opportunity to impress prior to making his loan switch to Crawley Town, for whom he scored on his debut on Saturday: “I got the move to Ipswich, and I didn’t play two games in the row there. Even if you are Lionel Messi you are not going to be at your best not playing two games in a row.

“There were a few games [in which] I played well, I didn’t feel I was given a chance but the manager has been good to me to let me go out on loan.

“I will just work as hard as I can here and if it reminds him I am a good player and I go back there and he wants me, then great. If not, I will keep playing football somewhere else.”

Drury’s 93-day loan to the Red Devils includes a clause which could see his move to the League Two club become permanent in January.

The 27-year-old joined Town for £150,000 from Blue Square Bet Premier side Luton in January.

I think one of the major issues is choosing his best 11 and sticking with it. As Drury says, no body can perform well playing only one or two games at a time. For far too long, we have had a squad of 30+ players of roughly the same ability. We need half that, plus half a dozen youngsters. Players need time to gel together, especially strikers whose confidence will be totally killed off if they only played 1 match per month.

ithink PJ deserves some time despite the poor start, ive more confidence in him ,as an experienced manager than RK who was just a ''big '' name .Some good signings have been made, we have virtually a complete new team ,although i have been disapointed and worried about results, i think better things will come . When the seagulls follow the trawler, it is because they think sardines will be thrown into the sea

Andy Drury came to us at the wrong time I think, I felt that he showed good talent and potential and agree with him that he did not really get the opportunity to display his talents and usefulness to it's best, however I wish him the very best wherever he eventually settles, he could be a star for the future, who knows ?

Good news, hopefully this could just put people's minds at rest and we can give him a full season, even Keane was given that.

Jewell is the first proper manager we have had for a while. Ok results have not been as good as we hoped but he had a real mess to clear up.

Magilton was out of his depth. Keane was brought in as a 'name' and it blew up spectacularly in our faces. Between them they wasted £20million and took this club back fifteen years or more.

Jewell clearly has a plan and whilst there will undoubtedly be 'hiccups' along the way he must be given time to sort this club out.

EIGHT months into his reign and so far very unimpressed. Poor results. Yet Monday was decent - albeit not making up for some real thrashings.

'I think I've maybe got more of a relationship with the owner than perhaps Jim and Roy had' - how does PJ know? Sounds arrogant - perhaps ME needs to speak to PJ more - afterall 8 defeats in 11 before Monday ....

For me, PJ has until Christmas. There can be no more excuses - after Monday the 'need time to bed in' excuse has gone. I expect results now. Failure and ME must act.

Alarm bells are ringing. Sounds to me like he's not letting Jewell do his thing without reference to Evans.
Ho hum. More mediocrity bekons...

Hope they are talking about future development...... Loans and aged players doesn't bide well although we will see Boro Brighton and WHam next 3 our current position is probably best we can hope for. Glad it's not my money being recycled across businesses.

The notion that Paul should be given anything less than at least 2 or 3 years is just plain stupid!!
If we'd have pulled the plug on the likes of Bobby Robson or, more recently, George Burley for not achieving immediate success we'd have all missed out on some truly great times!
Not only has he achieved success with 2 lesser clubs, he's brought in some quality players and started to steer our club back to what it used to be!
Even if this season doesn't deliver glory, do we really want to be one of those shabby outfits which sacks it's manager every few months - that's not us!
We need a united front here to help turn PR into a fortress!

At last a voice of sense and reason from blue 75. Just don't understand those( the usual suspects ) of give him til Xmas etc. Look where those teams are who have given managers no time. Sheffield utd, Sheffield Wednesday, Preston to name a few have all paid that price.

Southampton, norwich etc all went backwards to go forwards.

Success Isn't instant and just compare our squad now to a year ago. We would have laughed to think we would have bullard, chops, Andrews etc.

Let PJ get on with his job and if we stood together as fans as one and all got behind the team we might achieve something.

"Like the job Jewell is doing but to be honest I think Marcus made a big mistake in getting rid of Jim in the first place - we played some cracking stuff under him at times"

regresting calling for his head now ey? lol in all seriousness, we played some good stuff under jim (i remember being one disallowed, perfectly good goal away from the playoffs) but he was no use at all when givin money by marcus, he just didnt know what to do with it (a good knowalge of the transfer market is essentail these days) to be honest i still have confidence in paul, but i think the cracks are starting to show. i hope he repaires them quickly, casue another manger would set us back another year and the bigger the chance of marcus pulling the plug.

Please dont be too hard on PJ ,this IS a new team ,and its a bit early to be saying give him till Christmas, its not like we are bottom without a point.I dont think top2 is likely, and top six will be a challenge this year but lets not start scuttling the ship .COYB

What is it wih the negativety, we could get Josep Guardiola in as coach and give him the funds to bring his entire Barca team with him and that still wouldn't be good enough for some. Bobby Robson didn't do it over night, Alex ferguson didn't either and neither did Burley who to some on here seem to be the messiah, well he took five years of missing out before we gained promotion through the play off only for him to buy a load of has beens and never beens to send us back down again. So it's been re building ever since, sadly Joe didn't have the funds or we would have been back by now, partly agreed about Magilton but he wasn't the high profile name that Evans wanted. Give the man time and he'll be a success!!!
