Jewell Confident He Will Be Given Time
Jewell Confident He Will Be Given Time

Blues boss Paul Jewell is confident that club owner Marcus Evans will give him the time required to build a successful team at Portman Road. The Town manager says he has developed a good rapport with Evans since his appointment in January.

Jewell said: “I think I’ve maybe got more of a relationship with the owner than perhaps Jim and Roy had. We involve one another when making decisions and I’ve got the confidence that I’ve got a long-term objective here.

“If at the end of the day that doesn’t work out, it doesn’t work out, but I think the owner sees the plan and the long-term objective exactly the way I see it."

The Blues boss says the pair talk daily: “It’s not as if he’s out every two minutes backing me. Obviously he’s a very private and quiet man, but we speak on the phone regularly, two or three times a day, and I think that’s an important dialogue to have going on.

“I think we’ve got good players, it’s a fantastic football club with great supporters. The only thing that hasn’t been firing on all cylinders is the team, and it’s my job behind the scenes to get it right.

“I’ve been here eight months now and given a fair crack at it, I’m 100% convinced that I’ll get it right.”

Meanwhile, Jewell feels that last week’s Aaron Cresswell compensation tribunal wasn’t the best use of a day, even if the Blues came out of it with what appears to be an excellent deal: “I have to say four hours sat around a table going backwards and forwards was a waste of everybody’s time.

“I think Cressy is going to be a good player for us. Since he’s come here he’s improved an awful lot but he’s still got a long way to go, but we’re pleased with him.

“There have to be more of the likes of Cresswell out there and it’s our aim to get players like that to add to what we’ve got. It’s important to get young players.

“Cressy loves Ipswich, he loves coming here. It’s a big step up for him but he’s taken to it well after a shaky start, and that’s the type of player that we want.”

England U21 coach Stuart Pearce is reported to have been at Monday's game against Coventry and to have asked about Cresswell. However, the Birkenhead youngster, who turned 21 in December last year, is too old to play for Pearce's side.

Elsewhere, midfielder Andy Drury says he feels he wasn’t really given the opportunity to impress prior to making his loan switch to Crawley Town, for whom he scored on his debut on Saturday: “I got the move to Ipswich, and I didn’t play two games in the row there. Even if you are Lionel Messi you are not going to be at your best not playing two games in a row.

“There were a few games [in which] I played well, I didn’t feel I was given a chance but the manager has been good to me to let me go out on loan.

“I will just work as hard as I can here and if it reminds him I am a good player and I go back there and he wants me, then great. If not, I will keep playing football somewhere else.”

Drury’s 93-day loan to the Red Devils includes a clause which could see his move to the League Two club become permanent in January.

The 27-year-old joined Town for £150,000 from Blue Square Bet Premier side Luton in January.

Re Simonsays on first page of comments: Roy Keane had 20 months in charge, bags of patience/ support and financial backing (both for transfer fees and new signings' hefty wages) during his first summer to make the right signings. But it didn't work out. Not quite 2 years time but he arguably had enough time for us to at least be seeing some signs of improvement and progress. That was not happening whatsoever, the cup run merely papered over the cracks. Then again, your sort would have ultimately been moaning if we kept Keane in charge for a bit longer and ended up doing a Sheffield United as a result.. can't win with some of our fans...

Why bother to come on this site if you don't have anything positive to say!!

Hope it all works out for PJ, and feel for Drury who has certainly been the victim of the Jimmy Bullard craze at Town. He's always looked a tidy player to me and sure he'll end up at a top League One side at least, come January.

Blue75. An excellent post sir. You summed up everything i,ve been saying on here for a while. Let PJ build the team, give him time & patience & we could ALL reap the benifits in the next few years. COYB.

perhaps the secret to Jewell and Town's success is to by-pass Clegg and deal directly with the engine driver
