Jewell: We've Still Got a Soft Underbelly
Jewell: We've Still Got a Soft Underbelly
Monday, 31st Oct 2011 08:45

Boss Paul Jewell admitted that his side still has “a soft underbelly” after Saturday's 4-1 defeat at Millwall. The Town manager said that although his team pass the ball around, they don’t do so in dangerous areas.

Jewell said: “I think we probably passed the ball more than them. But we don’t pass it in areas where we can hurt them.

“At the minute we want to play the game as if we’re 3-0 up. We’re not prepared to get in behind them, to turn them round. It was pretty, pretty football and they just sucked us into the counter-attack, and that’s what happens.

“In the first half there were two goals in five minutes and pretty much the same in the second. It’s a soft underbelly that the team’s got.”

In the wake of the heavy loss, Jewell wanted to pull out of a long-standing booking on Sky’s Goals on Sunday but his former Bradford colleague Chris Kamara told him it was too late to find a replacement.

The Liverpudlian admitted that he wasn’t in quite the right frame of mind: “It’s not easy sitting here on a Sunday morning after you’ve just been beaten 4-1, but life goes on.

“You’ve got to try and face the music. We start again [on Monday] to try and get a result against Doncaster. There’s not a lot I can do sitting in the house moping, I’m moping sitting on your sofa instead.”

Told he’d get the chance to watch Millwall’s goals, he added: “I’ve seen the goals, in my sleep, time and time again.”

No-one is saying he should be sacked ffs (those who are don't deserve a response), but his decisions in the past 2 games have been awful (Pompey was just a warning) and people are 100% right to voice their concerns.

bostonusablue - could you try to be a little more patronising? Fergie's record of European and domestic success clearly and quite rightly allows him to have a few bad days. Jewell has nothing of the sort! Are you seriously suggesting we give him the same legroom?!... Some of us didn't like his appointment and are more likely to get on his back, that's all. I haven't seen anything to change my mind - he has overpaid for some old men who want to milk us for a few quid ....I don't trust his judgement tactically or in the transfer market and the sooner he goes the better. Give him 6 or 7 games to be polite then the old heave-ho....

“I've seen the goals, in my sleep, time and time again.”

Sadly - so did the Ipswich defence.

I was quite suprised when we went on a decent run playing the midfield and formation that we do as have never been a fan of playing four similar midfield players in a narrow formation. However with the results that we had I hoped that PJ might have stumbled across something that worked. Quite clearly it can only work if we come up against opposition with no pace and who don't press us. The last few games it has been badly exposed and I fear long term it will not work. We do need width and Martin is probably as good as we have (I still stand by the fact that Carson is useless). Where else will the width come from though? Moving Edwards forward is not really an option as he NEVER actually gets past his man, instead favouring getting to the defender and then stopping and passing backwards! It is worrying though, despite the investment, that the overall squad is still weak. Ellington does not even warrant a place on the bench at the moment and JET looks a huge waste of money (although willing to give him a chance that he might improve). Why didn't we try and get at least one attack minded player with pace?

Hugely disappointing result - conceding 4 goals to a very average Millwall side. We all (I hope) know that the buck stops with the manager - but to call for his sacking is madness at this point. Do we really want to be one of those clubs who appoints a new manager every season? I don't think so.

He will make mistakes. He will get things wrong. However, unlike Keane, I believe that PJ has the experience and character which mean that he will get it right more often than not.

He has my support - even when we lose.

COYB!

The more I think about, the more I would like to see us to play 5-3-2 with wing backs, we certainly have the right personnel. I think ths would free the playmakers in midfield (ie Jimmy) and although us to get forward without over exposing ourselves. Just an idea though what do people think?

I would like to see Kennedy come into the holding midfield role as he is a very useful passer and reads the game well ,Bullard can then move further forward where he is more dangerous with Andrews and either Martin /Edwards or Carson come into the midfield instead of Leadbitter

PartyDaz - Lol, i could not have put it better myself, lots of good comments on here but the usual settee CEO's pushing the big red button already, get a life, we're hugely improved, just needs tweaking and another formation to go with the diamond and we'll be there or thereabouts!! Town forever!!!!

a team takes on the qualities of its manager....

namely; half decent on its day but too many off days with no plan b to make it a consistant performer..consistancy is key..serious blips (3 "lucky" points from three winnable gameson paper) doesnt make a promotion candidate..

the rest have sussed us out..our diamond has ceased shining..we dont have another jewel..well we do..but hes always been just average.

( i noticed the other day he even started harping on AGAIN about what the goal was when he arrived..get over it!!..most twtders could have kept us up..change the record PJ..)

Ahhh who cares, nothing said on here is ever going to make the slightest bit of differenceto anything that happens to how ipswich play. Maybe Jewell did get it tactically right but the old buggers in the middle of the pitch had already forgotten it before the whistle blew for kick off or maybe Paul Jewell told them to kick it in our own net but the fact of the matter is we lost. Now we have Doncaster and if we win, 3 points, if we lose we always have Forest. Andif we lose that then... etc. If any of us were saying the right thing to do, then they'd be a coach or a manager or a scout. But we're either plumbers, work in an office or have a paper round which we then go and spend our earnings on our tickets. The best comments on here are the ones that actually make you laugh, I come on ere to be entertained but then there's some idiot saying that Jewell should be sacked? That's just crazy?

suffolklad - I am in awe of all that ambition of yours.

Yet another individual reason why ITFC will never need to be successful ........

I despair at some of these 'contented' people.

h32 - The mighty Ipswich have been in the top flight , remember 2000 !!!I think 2012 is a nice time to be up there again - cash afew big cheques , sign some great overrated foreign chaps and then drift back down , and so it will go on .... 2022 etc etc - what is wrong with tasting Premiership - anyway , in 5 years there will be a 10 team superleague and we will all be scrapping it out in The Isthmian Texaco Google Shield - I cannot wait ..another pumpkin for Mr Jewell

And to think we were once the undisputed 'Pride of East Anglia' - not even in contention anymore as that lot down the road creep further, and further, away into the distance. And who can argue with that anymore ? - no one.

Wait for it !!!! - who's going to be the first to tell me to go with them ??? - well I'm not, and NEVER would.
But I have enough ambition and desire, unlike some, to want to see the roles reversed. Don't you ???

I have one thing to say to all those really annoying people blaming PJ and saying he hasn't a clue. Where were you when we we winning and hadn't lost a game in 6? 2 poor results and you want to cut his head off. The season is long. 4-1 flattered Millwall a bit although they did deserve the win.
