Jewell: We've Still Got a Soft Underbelly
Jewell: We've Still Got a Soft Underbelly
Monday, 31st Oct 2011 08:45

Boss Paul Jewell admitted that his side still has “a soft underbelly” after Saturday's 4-1 defeat at Millwall. The Town manager said that although his team pass the ball around, they don’t do so in dangerous areas.

Jewell said: “I think we probably passed the ball more than them. But we don’t pass it in areas where we can hurt them.

“At the minute we want to play the game as if we’re 3-0 up. We’re not prepared to get in behind them, to turn them round. It was pretty, pretty football and they just sucked us into the counter-attack, and that’s what happens.

“In the first half there were two goals in five minutes and pretty much the same in the second. It’s a soft underbelly that the team’s got.”

In the wake of the heavy loss, Jewell wanted to pull out of a long-standing booking on Sky’s Goals on Sunday but his former Bradford colleague Chris Kamara told him it was too late to find a replacement.

The Liverpudlian admitted that he wasn’t in quite the right frame of mind: “It’s not easy sitting here on a Sunday morning after you’ve just been beaten 4-1, but life goes on.

“You’ve got to try and face the music. We start again [on Monday] to try and get a result against Doncaster. There’s not a lot I can do sitting in the house moping, I’m moping sitting on your sofa instead.”

Told he’d get the chance to watch Millwall’s goals, he added: “I’ve seen the goals, in my sleep, time and time again.”

h32 post 18.23,It just goes to show your knowledge of the club is very limited.Your to young to remember when a man called Bobby Robson came to Ipswich,he did not get it right at first and people like you said the same but he became of best manager.Just something to think about before you come out with these silly remarks.Just my thoughts h32 and probably you think way off the mark but something for you to think about if you can.

To H32 - ambition is good. I want Town to be kicking it with the big boys as much as anyone else. However, in my view the way forward is to build a stable foundation, though I admit that Jewell has made mistakes and I do question whether he's the right man for the job sometimes. Then I remind myself that there are still a lot of games left, as well as a transfer window for him to get things right. He will learn from what is wrong.

So I ask you, in one concise post - H32, what would you do? Tactics, personnel, boardroom decisions, etc. Because I am genuinely interested in what you actually think, beyond the scraps that seem to occur on these boards.

That goes for everyone. "Jewell OUT!!"? Well, why? Explain. Offer solutions. Maybe I'm asking for a bit too much from the internet, but there you go, my two cents.

TownOnTheUp, a voice of reason and sense.

I posted last season about the fantasy football managers who post. It would be interesting to see what is said and would open up a whole new debate.

When town go on another run the over reaction will quell again. Over 90 points to play for and its all to play for.

I really don't think some people will be happy whatever town do.

WarkyWonderLand - no problems there for you, and your brigade then - you would be forever happy as long as a ball was kicked at Portman Road - at whatever level.

How's that for lack of ambition ? - BIG problem is that ITFC has more than it's fair share of people like you following them - therefore the need for the Club to perform at higher levels of success is minimal.
Now that is SAD.

TownOnTheUp - that's not a bad post at all - if you can look back through ALL my posts you will see a very clear picture of what I feel is wrong with the Club, Managers appointed, mistakes made, etc; etc; - far too many fans/supporters/followers, call them what you will, seem to think that 'there is always another day' to put things right, games still to play, points still up for grabs etc; whilst ignoring what is facing them. This is a pointless philosophy that never bears fruit - believe me it doesn't.

We saw fit, yet again, to appoint a mediocre Manager - his record if studied closely was NOT good - and it never will be.
I hope I am proved wrong - I genuinely do, and if so I will be the first on here to admit it, and congratulate him for it.

It is not rocket science for this Club to be successful AGAIN - starting with the right Manager, and building from the basics upwards i.e sound youth policy and continuity thereafter - NOT producing youngsters then letting them go for NOTHING, or at best peanuts - I won't name examples, the list would be too long UNFORTUNATELY.

We've had a few reasonable results this season - but things generally are not looking good on many fronts within the Club.
Only a super optimist, or someone who knows NOTHING about the game they watch, would disagree.

Sounds like we best pack up now then! No, I will not be happy so long as a ball is kicked however when we are only just into November I am an optimist.

Some on here just want to lamblast others just because they don't agree with their own views. One thing, would just like to know what makes some people happy and want they want supporting itfc.
