Jewell: We Were Like a Pub Team
Jewell: We Were Like a Pub Team
Wednesday, 30th Nov 2011 07:37

Manager Paul Jewell said his Blues side were no better than a pub team after their 4-0 defeat to Burnley. The Liverpudlian believes that on current form Town’s highly-paid squad including a number of experienced Premier League campaigners wouldn’t get into many teams in the Championship.

A seething Jewell said: “Anyone who was watching that [match] would have thought we were a pub team really.

“There are a lot of big reputations out there and people look at the teamsheets and say there are a lot of good names in there, but I don’t see many of them getting in anyone else’s team at the moment. It’s just unbelievable that performance.“

The Blues boss feels there are a lack of on-field leaders at present: “We can talk about leaders and this and that, we haven’t got any, I don’t see any.

"As soon as a goal goes in or something goes against us, there’s not enough of them, or any of them really, trying to get back into the game.”

Jewell is clearly honoured to be leading the Blues but doesn't think all his players feel the same way: “This is Ipswich Town. I’m proud as punch to be manager of Ipswich Town but I think some of them think it’s just another game.”

Meanwhile, defender Ibrahima Sonko, an unused sub at Burnley, thanked fans for making the lengthy trip: “Hope all the all ITFC fans got home safely. It’s been a very long disappointing night. We all hurt. Thank you again for coming such a long way.”

Hey, leave pub teams out of it, a comment like that just isn't fair to all those that get up early on a Sunday morning, not because they are getting paid a fortune, or because its their job, but because they love the game........ Maybe its time some of our so called "superstars" started playing for the love of our club...... Pathetic.

No leaders because none of them belong to the club. Make Bullard captain and try to get some pride out of him.

Oh dear, despite a very good start to his time at ITFC, it really looks like PJ is out of his depth. He doesn't know how to deal with this crisis - and that's what it is, a crisis. We look like relegation fodder. The last 3 managers have proven not to be up to the job:
Magilton = mediocrity (but rather better than his 2 successors)
Keane = disastrous
Jewell = calamity

Massiv insult to a pub team, now people wonder why they dont fork out the money to go and watch the team for this very reason, somebody sign us 2 wide players 4 defenders and 3 creative midfielders two who can play wide and create some chances for the strikers as they get no service week in week out

Why does he persist with this pathetic diamond formation, rarely is this going to work with 4 centre mids who are basically the same player. Surely a 4-5-1 would be better away from home, try and grind out a win!

Dear Paul
words fail me.
If we are worse than a pub team what are you doing, day in day out with them.

We need either Sean O'Driscoll, Matt Holland with Fabian Wilnis or George Burley, or Martin O'Neil to sort out this mess.

14 Million quid was paid to the 1st team last season and they cant be bothered.

I wonder if they think about the fans who get around 20k a year as they turn the keys to their Bentley's

So Jewell when's trials I play right back, I've got pace, I don't post a ball in the air and I'm a leader... Up for it?

Thank god for Sonko's comments - at least he shows some respect. The problem with the club though is Evans and Clegg and their awful decisions. Given the level of debt, income and current form, you couldn't value this club at any more than £10m so ME selling and taking a massive hit on the debt owed to him isn't going to happen. The best I can hope for is ME finally realising he and Clegg are out of their depth and appointing a new Chief Exec who knows what he's doing and who can put a coherent long term strategy and philosophy together for the club with a new manager. They should bring Magic back and get Holland in a coaching role, get rid of the old players (Bullard should just hang his boots up and go full time on pathetically squeezing every last inflated penny out of Hull) and play the youngsters.

None of this will of course happen and looking at the fixture list for Dec and Jan makes me shudder.

The only stat that counts is 39 goals conceded and not yet in December. 39! We cannot defend. Relegation form. Lose v Watford and he has got to walk. Depressing.

Observations

1. Diamond must surely be dead now.
2. Either 442, 4141 or 451 must be played. if we miss Sonko then the formation must protect the back 4 with 4141 or 451. With sonko move to 442. Though I cannot believe one player makes that much difference.
3. It appears 4 central midfielders dont work, we even told RK that. Back to basics 2 proper central midfield, two wide midfield with pace. Two ment up front. Adjust for non 442 formation.
4. Edwards is not RB, unless a right midfielder will offer him protection if he goes forward and not drift infield or push on as well. Edwards should be in midfield with stay put RB who does not go forward unless to pass or cross beyond halfway line.
5. Formation has to change with square pegs in square holes.
6. Give captaincy to someone with the ability to motivate the team.

PJ do not derby us please. Step back and go back to basics shore up the defence then work on attacking the opposition because at the moment we need to start at the back before we worry about anything going forward.
