Bruce Claimed to Be a Town Target
Bruce Claimed to Be a Town Target
Sunday, 4th Dec 2011 10:00

Town view recently sacked Sunderland manager Steve Bruce as a possible replacement for Paul Jewell, according to claims in one of this morning’s tabloids. Bruce, the father of ex-Blue Alex, left the Black Cats after two and a half years this week.

With Town’s run of defeats stretching to seven against Watford on Saturday, names of potential new bosses are starting to surface with Twitter claims of Peterborough’s Darren Ferguson being lined up and former Cardiff boss Dave Jones also rumoured to be a possible successor to Jewell.

Despite the run of losses, owner Marcus Evans gave his backing to the current incumbent on Wednesday, while Jewell ruled out resigning, and a change appears unlikely to be immediately in the offing.

We are only one of two teams out of all 4 leagues who in the past 6 games have got no points.

For those who feel Jewell should be given more games, how many? We are in a worse position this season to last and concede so many goals. How after 11 months in charge he is going to solve his defence problems in the next few games. That should have been solved at the beginning when he knew Macauley was going. So when Collins goes back to Stoke and if Sonko is injured who are our defensive lynch pins.Andrews is our top scorer and will be on his way too.

He doesn't believe we need a right back and doesn't think a captain is an important role on the pitch and appears that he doesn't believe in youth. And another team will have to be built next season, AGAIN. Progress!!

His ideas are out dated and if people are pleased that we played slightly better against watford (who are poor with a novice manager) then that is worrying.

We need someone to make us competitive in the championship let alone think of promotion aspirations.

Is PJ the one who can do that? After 11 months and a team of ageing players its a big task. Defeat at Barnsley ( with a manager who used to be at Rochdale) who are scoring goals and winning and that will be time up on another sad chapter of this club.

Those who go down are those who let in the most and at the moment that is us. That is reality not pesimism.

"Why would you employ someone on a two and a half year contract, allow him to say at the very start of his job that "this(turning the team around) is a two and a half year job" and then sack him eleven months later?"
Jas1972...that sort of comment makes far too much sense to be posted here!!

its called patience i believe, thats why we have had no success in recent years, no continuity. and we would have had no success in the seventies and early eighties if the supporters had got there way... Coyb

An ex-Man U player who was great on the pitch and crap as a manager!!!???

Haven't we already had our fingers burnt on this method????

People - the issue, as always, won't be who we WANT, but rather who we can GET!! Let's be honest, if you didn't support Town, what on earth would possess you to EVER consider coming here????

Warkys-Tash: Its worth pointing out that Southampton didn't bounce straight back up as they were hit with a points deduction in that first season in League 1 - would have reached play-offs without it (would probably have won them too).

And as for everyone suggesting Terry Butcher for the job.... PLEASE GOD NOOOOOOOOO!!!!! An ITFC legend yes, but terrible track record in English management. Remember Brentford a couple of seasons back? They couldn't get him out the door quick enough.

The way I see it is this: Last season we accepted a settling in period the first part of this season we accepted new players taking time to gel, our expectations therefore, where high and we perceived that some of the players signed were going to be goal goldmines i.e. Chopra and Jet etc...

PJ has been thinking through various formations but stuck with the noe infamous Diamond formation and had two or three games where the Diamond formation worked but alas was flawed we were exposed on our flanks and our defence was shod 3/4 of the game through due to the hevey workload and became devorced from the rest of the team ...it doesnt need me to outline this any further see Peterbrough see Southampton etc... an 442 Vs Diamond is what's been going on with PJ his idea was to bring something a little more daring ie midfield swarming the defence when attackking and mustering in defence when under the kosh on paper it actually looks really doable and I am sure in training PJ beleived the players would get it eventually well they didnt and still dont alongside this Back room squabbles with players coments like if you want to go ....go just dont cut the mustard and does nothing to promote unity within the team when players are lambasred like Priskin being humiliated to the press etc etc.. gives one the impression that PJ is "swaggering" with all his effort to afirm his the boss but little effect on the pitch let alone the players so we have to ask is PJ still finding his feet still or is he "swaggering" around Portman road knowing that the board support him an there's nothing anyone can do about it...

Well if his half the Manager I think he is he will now be really digging deep to come up with a new strategy but the thing is this PJ needs to install belief the players are in fact all good enough and well qualified for the job... enough to take us up to the Premiership PJ can turn this around I believe but forget any three game turn around "Hollywood blockbuster style performances" this season.

I would say Paul needs some room for change he needs time now to look at the squads talents and to place the challace into there hands and allow them to deliver for him how?...he needs to be seen kicking and ranting and making it clear that this is not going to be the normplayers want to shine but they also want to know what is expected of them so instead of this stoic ill take it on the chin attitude PJ is content to allow he needs to understand that its not his place to take bad performances and it is certainly not his place to make whinging comments from the sidelines to the press....
Great Managers like Sir Bobby on occasion had a good rant and rallying cries to go back into the breach and pluck victory from the jaws of defeat that's what its all about....... chuck on the youngsters like Carson have a go give and give them the belief get Chopra in an out and out forward poaching position not wing attack for goodness sake and bring Scotland in to feed and or to mop up any loose ricochet balls and lets have a midfield straifing the goal with long shots running attack was as Sir Bobby would have said is the best form of defence running in to really scare the opposing defence lets get creative and move as a unit make them come to us lets keep the ball when we want it slow it down speed it up dictate the game those are all of course old clichés but they are what made Ipswich Town circa Sir Bobby Robson,Mick Mills Eric Gates,Paul Mariner etc etc..(sorry no offence not enough room to include all the greatest names of this time) be the team they were nothings changed except the wages Bobby used to get the defence to train on there own to practice movement pieces and formation changes and again belief that they are a unit that they can rely on when you have the back bone you can flesh it out with the midfield joining in the ranks of defence and so on.....remember Sir Bobby Robson was booed at first it does take time I am like any other Ipswich town supporter I "hate ''to see Ipswich like this..... Paul new script new belief new tactics as mentioned even if it takes 541 style football we need wins thats all that counts right now and new Sermon to our players belief belief belief this is your chance and this is it right now!!!!

i still have faith in jewell to turn this around! i know he will, if we was to sack i think it would be a shame despite our run of form because jewell is a good manager and a lovely bloke! i dont care what happens aslong as we turn this around, i dont mind losing if we are playing good football but at the moment this aint happening

Steve Bruce can't even be bothered to take 1st team training. If you want what Sunderland has to offer get Eric Black.

I'd give Jewell more games and sack him if we lose to Barnsley and Derby. We can't keep going on like this. Bruce would be a great signing, lots of experiance and good contacts. COYB <3
