Jewell: Same Old Story Saturday, 7th Jan 2012 18:05
Town manager Paul Jewell was again left frustrated by his side’s tendency to concede bad goals as the Blues lost 3-1 at Hull City in the FA Cup.
Jewell said: “It’s the same old story. The first two goals were just bad goals, then we got ourselves back in the game with a bit of a fightback in the second half, have two good opportunities to equalise, and then the third Hull goal, you have to see it to believe it.
“That sums us up and that’s why we are where we are - because of that calamitous defending. We give teams goal starts every week.
“Even when we beat Barnsley we had to come back from 2-0 down. You’ve seen the goals, if you see goals like that at a lot lower standard league than this you’d be scratching your head.”
He says his team need to show their second half spirit for entire games: “We showed character in the second half, but why don’t we show that all game?
“In the first 10 minutes we started OK, then one long ball, more often than not, puts us on the back foot. We just can’t defend or are not defending individually or as a group.
“It’s almost as if they take in turn to make a rick. They’re not even basic errors. I don’t know how the second goal goes in. On the first goal we’re trying to get Damien Delaney off because he was injured and we couldn’t get the ball out of play.
“Any strength test we lose, any race we’re losing, and it was the same against Forest and against Reading. When it becomes nitty-gritty we don’t win enough battles.”
“To a certain extent it’s psychological," he added. "We know confidence is at a low. We showed in the second half that we’ve got a bit about us, but we show it for 45 minutes or 44 minutes, which isn’t enough. We’ve got to show it over the whole game, from the first whistle to the last whistle, however long the game is.
“It’s not just today. We are why where we are in the league because of defensive errors. Everyone seems to take a turn at having one."
Jewell confirmed that Delaney’s injury was to his foot which recently had a screw inserted into it with the Blues now down to two fit senior centre-halves, Ibrahima Sonko and Tommy Smith: “It looks like his foot. We were trying to get the ball out of play, but it didn’t quite happen.
"Every goal should have been avoided. I know every manager says that, but the manner in which we leak goals is unbelievable.”
Hull caretaker-boss Nicky Barmby, who is set to be confirmed in the position full-time on Monday, was delighted to go into round four: “I’m very pleased we got the win. In the first half we played some good stuff and I was pleased that we went in 2-0 up at half-time because we knew that Ipswich would come at us as they had nothing to lose, especially in the cup at 2-0 down.
“We saw them against Barnsley when they reversed that scoreline and ended up winning, so we knew they were a dangerous side.
“We didn’t really get our football going in the second half until the final 10 or 15 minutes but we’re well pleased that we scored three goals at home, so all in all it’s a good day for us.”

alfromcol - another sensible post from you !! - you must, at long last, be on a course of realisation - not before time either. No point in NOT smelling the Coffee - as it really is. In my opinion, the point you raise shows how much the attitude towards supporters has changed at ITFC - definately NOT for the better - at a time when it should be MUCH better.

FornhamBlue Your point re Edwards not being a RB is accepted. h32 I have to admit that having been at the game at Hull and seen a further 2 soft goals given away (forget the last one - to late to mean anything) I am coming to the conclusion that with the current management and coaching staff nothing will change. It begs the question of what coaching goes on between games to put right the basic errors that are occurring week after week. (I have to stay that I thought Keane's appointment would be good for ITFC and I thought that PJ's would also be good. I am not going to support the next one until he/she is successful Many on this board have been critical of only playing 1 up front. But many of the goals against are scored when we have 4/5 players up front, the move breaks down and the opposition cut through us like a knife through butter.

Headline should read Jewell :'Same Old Sh*t'. Respect to the fans who made the Journey and if the majority of the players didn't acknowledge the ITFC fans after the match Jewell should of made sure they did. Disgrace all round. What kind of hopeless manager has Clegg landed us with. Just ask the Derby fans. If it wasn't for the Olympics these 2 would have gone before xmas. Come on ME seize the moment and get Warnock !!

@ Jas0999 You have stated the facts and all I can say is fair points - no-one can argue that. I would like to see either Billy Davies or Neil Warnock. Lee Clarke would be a good choice but doubt we could attract him (bring Rhodes back with him please!) - I don't believe any of Warnocks teams in the Championship would ever get thrashed and let in goals like Jewell's team. Its so soul destroying to see.

Wouldn't say no to Neil Warnock. He's used to dealing with difficult boards and he won't take any crap. Maybe he can do us a job? Otherwise, I really don't think things will look any brighter with Jewell gone.

alfromcol - I too thought Keane would prove to be an excellent appointment, as did most people. Jewell, if you check my posts, I predicted would be a disaster from day one - has turned out to be even worse than I expected, but I am not at all surprised. I admire the support that some of you have given Jewell, call it naivety, not knowing the game, not having ambition, whatever - but I am pleased that you are now seeing it as it really is. Because until that happens, collectively, including ourselves as supporters, this Club will never go forward again. Because the same old cr#p will continue to be served up by this ramshackle 'top end' of the Club - if you just keep 'coughing up'. And it's NOT cheap to watch this rubbish either.
