Jewell: Same Old Story Saturday, 7th Jan 2012 18:05
Town manager Paul Jewell was again left frustrated by his side’s tendency to concede bad goals as the Blues lost 3-1 at Hull City in the FA Cup.
Jewell said: “It’s the same old story. The first two goals were just bad goals, then we got ourselves back in the game with a bit of a fightback in the second half, have two good opportunities to equalise, and then the third Hull goal, you have to see it to believe it.
“That sums us up and that’s why we are where we are - because of that calamitous defending. We give teams goal starts every week.
“Even when we beat Barnsley we had to come back from 2-0 down. You’ve seen the goals, if you see goals like that at a lot lower standard league than this you’d be scratching your head.”
He says his team need to show their second half spirit for entire games: “We showed character in the second half, but why don’t we show that all game?
“In the first 10 minutes we started OK, then one long ball, more often than not, puts us on the back foot. We just can’t defend or are not defending individually or as a group.
“It’s almost as if they take in turn to make a rick. They’re not even basic errors. I don’t know how the second goal goes in. On the first goal we’re trying to get Damien Delaney off because he was injured and we couldn’t get the ball out of play.
“Any strength test we lose, any race we’re losing, and it was the same against Forest and against Reading. When it becomes nitty-gritty we don’t win enough battles.”
“To a certain extent it’s psychological," he added. "We know confidence is at a low. We showed in the second half that we’ve got a bit about us, but we show it for 45 minutes or 44 minutes, which isn’t enough. We’ve got to show it over the whole game, from the first whistle to the last whistle, however long the game is.
“It’s not just today. We are why where we are in the league because of defensive errors. Everyone seems to take a turn at having one."
Jewell confirmed that Delaney’s injury was to his foot which recently had a screw inserted into it with the Blues now down to two fit senior centre-halves, Ibrahima Sonko and Tommy Smith: “It looks like his foot. We were trying to get the ball out of play, but it didn’t quite happen.
"Every goal should have been avoided. I know every manager says that, but the manner in which we leak goals is unbelievable.”
Hull caretaker-boss Nicky Barmby, who is set to be confirmed in the position full-time on Monday, was delighted to go into round four: “I’m very pleased we got the win. In the first half we played some good stuff and I was pleased that we went in 2-0 up at half-time because we knew that Ipswich would come at us as they had nothing to lose, especially in the cup at 2-0 down.
“We saw them against Barnsley when they reversed that scoreline and ended up winning, so we knew they were a dangerous side.
“We didn’t really get our football going in the second half until the final 10 or 15 minutes but we’re well pleased that we scored three goals at home, so all in all it’s a good day for us.”

First Post. What a day to make it i know. As StowTractor Boy says above if any new signings made this week we'll know if ME is keeping faith in PJ. But if he did so after 7 defeats it looks likely he will now. Assuming we've got another 18 months of PJ ( except if we go down, then 'bye, bye' from ME in summer most likely): 1) he is saying right things about focussing on youth (and Hymn back!) 2) if we get some young, hungry Cressy types in & use some of youngsters better then no reason why we won't be in a better place this time next season and 3) push on for 2013-4 (even play offs next season). After all teams doing well in championship this season, aren't exactly ultra consistant world beaters- surely we can match that in time scale i mention above? 4) looking up road, Lambert must get head hunted sooner or later (especially with him being known on continent from his playing days) & if he goes, I can see them going in decline, and by, say 2013-4, be down/ us up= normal order of things in EA restored!

Agree with the fan who said do something about it. If you aren't happy (and who could be?!) take action. Banners. Chanting. Sit in protests. That could help us in our cause. Bleeting on a discussion board won't. Whatever it takes make your voice heard for the sake of the club.

Only time we have had real protests against a manager was John Duncan. This is worse. We need to make our voices heard. Can't see how anyone can defend jewell given his record and where he has taken us. Enough is enough.

Haven't posted for a while but here is my take. PJ did not become a bad manager overnight. His buys have been poor, but I am surprised there is not more criticism focused on ME. We were promised a revolution by ME, but all that seems to have involved is cost cutting in the staff and no serious ambiiton. We have sold players for a lot of money and not used that to reinvest in the squad (Rhodes and Whickham as a front line, anyone). A couple of signing s of 1-2 million and loan players is not competitive in a league where clubs are prepapred to spend significantly on success. Look at Leicseter, Boro, WHU. I think PJ wanted Coppinger amd Sharp in the summer and MR wouldn't bankroll it Yes it was more than they were wortth - but we are meant to be a club with reources and ambition and success means taking risks. I genuinly think we wil be relegated this year, because we lack the will to fight and ME and Clegg are out of their depth. I have watched all home games this year and have not seen such a shambles since I started watcing in 74. Don't know what to tell my kids, 6 and 11, who go to the games. What a mess. What a shamnbles. The owners, staff and players should hang their heads in shame.

Well done to the fans that went to Hull and back. I didn't go and the fans that went deserve a huge amount of credit. Alex Mathie was my Ipswich man of the match from listening to the game on ther radio. Leadbitter's last 10 games in the team won 0 drawn 0 lost 10. Captain Useless!!! Phil TWTD - Has there ever been an Ipswich Town player who has presided as captain over 10 ten straight defeats? I have supported the football club for over 30 years and know that is not the case in those years. Clegg's answers to the questions raised in his interview this week were disgraceful but I fear the Chelsea fan is here for the long term. The owner should not only get rid of Clegg but the rest of the board such as Martin Pitcher, etc. I am not going to the Birmingham game in the week and if there has not been a change in manager for the Blackpool game I won't be going to that game either. If Foley is alongside Brenner for that game then I won't be listening to that game on the radio either. I give the custodian a lot of credit and he and the fans deserve a lot more. I can't believe that he is not already looking for a new manager. My choice would be Terry Butcher, I have watched Inverness play in the last 12 months and his team play for him. His defence show a lot of desire to defend a set piece, which is huge step forward from our team. Could you expect Terry would except anything less? I think Curbs and Karl Robinson (MK Dons) would also be good choices as the next manager. Jewell is now finished at Ipswich, when Colin Healy ran down the tunnel in the Donny game, Jewell should have been heading for the exit at the same time. It has been clear that his position as manager has been untenable since then. I would rather have a Colin Healy in my team than a Grant Leadbitter. If we can't get a new manager in by the Blackpool game, then I expect Russell Osman to be in charge as caretaker manager. Russell has done a great job this year with the youth team. Imangine Terry Butcher and Russell Osman together again at ITFC. What did Sir Bobby call them when playing together at the heart of the defence, Bacon and Eggs? Manager (Terry) and assistant amanager (Russell) sounds great to me. Also think of how postively this would effect the attendance figures and feel good factor at PR. COYB

warkway, exactly right. We had a mess here before Jewell came and we'll have one after he's gone unless the entire club has a look at itself and ambitions. We haven't taken any transfer risks for quality players. I think Jewell, Evans and Clegg are all culpable there, let's stop pretending it'll just all normalise itself once Jewell is fired. I remember the week that we looked set for Ameobi, then the club failed his medical saying his hamstring injury was to bad to be worth it. He played three days later and has played regularly ever since. For me that sums this club up from the top down. All talk and no trousers.

I agree with one of the posters on here; dont dislike PJ but his tactics, transfer dealings, obvoius comments just get me really ******* off. Instead of bringing on smith why not bring peters on , at least he has a little more pace. This is saying something but i would rather have Roy keane back than this mess PJ is getting us into. If these new players dont come fast we will sink this month to the bottom of the league.

So Clegg reckons we have moved forward in the last year. He needs to spell out how he comes to this conclusion. Clegg recruited PJ, PJ has not performed, Clegg agreed to selling key players with potential - Clegg needs to be replaced - his only lifeline is the London Olympics, when they are finished, ME will have no further need for Clegg. CLEGG OUT. His interviews are weak and unconvincing and lack any knowledge of sport or football, all he has that keeps him safe is a ticket on the Olympics gravy train. That train is reaching its next and final stop - the Ipswich to Stratford arriving summer 2012. Get off the train Mr Clegg and don't come back - hang around the Olympic stadium for a few months and West Ham may throw you a few scraps if you're lucky.

Well said BlueVelvet thats Evans has an interest in thats why he signed Keane get Marcus Evans on TV as he is always going to be big news hes keeping Clegg to make sure of corporate deals at the Olympics when its over goodness knows what he will do then I dread to think but I believe MARCUS EVANS has no interest in Ipswich Town

@mickmillstash. Agree totally onthe Edwards point - all things considered I think he did a decent job at Hull, especially considering he's not a right back and has done a job for us. But for PJ to focus on this point during the post match interview when criticising the overall perfromance is culpable. 2-1 down with a minute left and at least the guy was trying to get forward to make things happen. If we can believe the response of our CEO to contract negotiations requested by Edwards and Scotland, and now PJ's loosely veiled critcism of Edwards I think it's safe to say Edwards will be on his way by the end of the season. I wonder if the penny will drop this time that we're going to need a right back?! So two more players (Edwards/Scotland) potentially out in the footballing world critcising their treatment by our once respected football club - how on earth are we going to attract players coming the other way? Clegg is destroying our Clubs reputation, patronsises us Supporters and takes our support for granted. When he talked about painted turnstiles is he really that inept or was he just taking the *!**?

All i ask is who says who stays and goes on the pitch... sorry to hark back a bit but im sick of ex players doing well for their respective clubs week in week out! Ambrose, Rhodes, Trotter, Bowditch, Walters, Logan, Macauley, and who sells your only proper right back and still to this day has not been replaced!! As we all know a team that lacks round pegs in round holes wont do well it will just win on the odd lucky occassion when things click. Blaming the defence every week for shortcomings is partly fair but from my experience of playing at the back you got to look at where the ball came from first... who has not tracked back chased that player for all his worth... or was it another shocking loose pass from our totally under creative midfield (all bar Bullard & Martin the same player all potential captains defensive midfielders!!! ) The team i feel just don't want to do the donkey work in a game the part that carries the fight. Its like a fighter with one arm tied behind his back. They only lokk any good sometimes with the ball at their feet, without it you can smell a goal coming to me the whole team set up is weird. Lastly i'll cut my rant short .... to me you must play horses for courses until a right back is brought in i would play... 3-5-2 ALB Jaime Peters RB Sonko CB Ainsley CB Cresswell LB Edwards RW Andrews CM Bowyer CM Martin LM Bullard Behind front two Chopra Right Murphy left Lastly Lastly the team above is hardly a world beater so as per a previous story young players with guts guile creativity and flair need only apply! Very sad decline for last three years, where will it end!!! Still COYB, keep the faith!

ClassyCranson - can I just correct you on one point - the late great Bobby Robson said HUNTER and BEATTIE went together like bacon and eggs, when he was standing on the balcony of the town hall for the civic reception of the 1978 FA Cup winning side. To the best of my knowledge, he never used the term regarding Osman and Butcher. But oh what a memory .... winning the FA Cup, winning the UEFA Cup ....winning a game, any game!! Unfortunately all I see at the moment is relegation for us as things go from disastrous to catastrophic! RIP ITFC PS: Sir Bob and Sir Alf must be turning in their graves :(

MickMillsTash FornhamBlue Not only was Edwards at fault for the 3rd goal but he has to shoulder a large chunk of the blame for the 1st goal when he got sucked towards the opposition corner flag and the ball was played quickly upfield and Sonco had to come out of the middle to cover. Agreed that EDwards is fine going forward but we have shipped so many goals from crosses from the right because he gets beaten or goes AWOL He can't defend. On thing from the Hull game that disgusted me was the fact that, with the exception of a couple of players who acknowledged the Town supporters after the game, none of the others did. They all trooped off into the tunnel. They may have been disappointed with the result but not as much as 800 or so of us!!!! It would have cost them nothing to have acknowledged the supporters who had taken a day out to travel to Hell and back.
FornhamBlue added 20:31 - Jan 8
@alfromcol I think you're missing the point. We could debate for ages which players are responsible for the root cause of all the goals conceded over a miserable season so far. The point about Edwards is that he is not a right back - and never has been, so to single him out (or the 3rd goal as PJ put it), is merely making a scapegoat out of somebody who was at least trying to get us back into the game. So why haven't we recruited a right back since David Wright left if Edwards cannot fulfil that role? Why did we let Eastman & Bruce slip away if we didn't have a right back inthe club? I'm not saying either of these were up to getting us to the promised land, but at least they could play right back and then Edwards would be able to play in his natural position (which we paid Sunderland a £1m plus for). As for the first goal, I'm not laying the blame at anybody in particular, but Sonko still had plenty of opportunity the clear up Edwards mistake. All irrlevant now - the guy will soon be his way I suspect. I'm sure PJ and SC have identified an appropriate replacement - probably Chris Makin!
