Jewell Embroiled in Sexism Storm
Jewell Embroiled in Sexism Storm
Thursday, 12th Jan 2012 09:47

Town boss Paul Jewell is at the centre of a sexism storm this morning in the wake of his post-match press conference after the Blues' 2-1 defeat at Birmingham last night. Jewell is trending on Twitter and featuring on morning radio phone-ins.

The widely reported version of what the Town manager said regarding assistant referee Amy Fearn and the penalty the Blues weren't awarded is not an entirely accurate version of events.

As Jewell's press conference began, a reporter asked the Town boss, "I think everyone to a man thought it was a penalty, what's your view?" Jewell responded, "Unfortunately to every man, but not a woman.

“Although the referee didn’t have a very good view, the lineswoman, or whatever she's called, had a great view - it was a stonewall penalty and a sending off. You’ll have to ask her why she didn’t give it. It was a stonewall penalty."

Not a sexist comment. Get real. Let's concentrate on trying to get a rb and cb before the game against Blackpool. With our present squad, can't see how we hope to even compete with them. Ipswich 1-4 Blackpool my prediction. Unlike others on here, I don't think this will lead to pjs sacking. Me and clog stood by keane until the bitter end.

Karlosfandangal, ask yourself why is the defence poor? Answer is becuase Jewell has been incapable of signing any decent Central defenders despite having money to spend. This means that our current plight is his fault. This is why he should be sacked and not because of this ridiculous "sexism" non-story.

I don't want us to get any of jewell's target because he can only sign flops. We do not have until December next (I assume you mean this) year as at the current rate by then we will be in League 1, which will be a disaster and I for one can not even contemplate being TWO leagues below Norwich!

Enough of all this talk of sacking. We've been down this path and it's not working. Stability is needed. Stability, the basis from which to build a winning consistency. Look mid-term and sod the short term. We have enough old timers. Time to blend in youth and give them time to find their feet and flourish.

I remeber Burley sacking, well selling rather quickly for next to nothing, Danny Sommer for being drunk in the two centre without any shoes.

Since Burley we have had......

An idiot celebrating a goal by showing support to his friend who killed people by drink driving

An twice convicted racist thug who once had a fight in a Maccy D's for not being served by a white anglo-saxon

A person who seems unable to understand to drive a car you need a driving licence, mot, tax and insurance and lies when asked about it

A known drinker and gambler who is given cash to pay off thugs rather than simple sacked for bringing the club into disrepute

and now a sexist !!!!!!

Those, indeed, Were The Days - this club is now an non principled tax expense..........

I fail to see the sexism in what Jewell said. The tone is derogatory of course, but not really sexist.

Not sure, even in our crazy PC world, that you can be sacked for making a witty response to a question!!

11 defeats in 14 is all we need to know. Conceeding goals for fun. Failing to address key areas of the pitch. Relying on loans. It was a daft comment to make - but PJ should have been shown the door long ago. PJ OUT.

p.s. a quick apology for the comment is all that's required. The dreadful results is why he should be sacked.

So your not allowed to call a woman a woman because it is sexist well in that case could we put our heads together and think of other things to call her,I can think of quite a few. This is the football officials way of covering up a complete ricket but diverting attention towards Jewell. Seriouly ,how dare he,even in a temper over being denied 3 points, call a female official a woman!!.

yet again the media overreacting to a statement. he was merely saying she happned to be female and stating she cocked up. statement of fact. he did not say it was because she was a woman that she messed up.
don't get me wrong I want the guy gone but he doesn't deserve that tag fromthe predatory media.

Thanks for actually quoting the context of the remark, unlike The Sun for example. Personally I would call it more sardonic than sexist.

Interesting that (according to the BBC) the head of the ref's union takes the chance to go "wwaaahhhhh" and label the comment as "clearly sexist" (it's no more sexist than the question asked) and uses the furore to divert from the real problem -- repeated poor performance by their union members damaging the sport.

Note this is not the first time this particular official had been singled out for making a terrible decision.

I hate Ipswich fans sometimes I really do. Last night we played well! We deserved to win and if the stonewall penalty was given (as it should have been) we probably would have won. Get off Jewell's back. He is a good manager, and the team are not being outplayed especially looking at last nights performance against a team who have played in Europe this season! Yes he has made some poor signings and even he admits that, but what is the point in getting a manger in for 1 year, sacking them, get another in for 1 year, sacking them.. etc. Give him time (a few seasons) to build a squad. Paul Jewell, go sue the head of the ref's union for deformation of character. Your comments were not CLEARLY sexist.

Some interesting comments about a whole range of issues here. I don't believe this was intended as a sexist remark. It was a stupid one in today's climate but I am sure Mr Jewell would have been equally as critrising if a man had made the mistake that Amy Fearn did. The real issue is that we are not performing and if the sack is looming I hope it is for under peforming rather than a silly comment taken out of context by the tabloid press. If Jewell did go we could always look for a Manager who has pulled together a good squad of players who have continued to improve over the course of time. Someone like Hope Powell maybe that would really give the media something to report on! To all persons reading this be careful no sexist remarks in your reply!

He was clearly frsutrated when he made the comment, I am sure he regrets it and will apologise- some offence will have been caused but some town fans were singing get your tits out so we can hardly criticise too much.

We all know the issues, we all know the action needed - for Christs sake lets get on it with it.

@MickMillsTash good points. Perhaps "Put your specs on for the lads" would have been more appropriate?

Come on who actually thinks Jewell has said anything wrong here? Besides its clear that women have a place in football: serving the pies and hot dogs at half time and cleaning the stands after the match.

scottmdp - Warnock's age should make no difference at all. Lot's of excellent managers are in their 60s. Alex Ferguson is 70!

Curbs won't come. After five years Ipswich fans need to stop wishing their lives away for him.

Its difficult to know how women prefer to be titled. There was a time when all female thesbians called themselves actresses. Now some call themselves actors and other actresses. Also, the age old problem with chairman. Is it PC to call a female a chairman, chairwoman, chairperson or just chair. Who knows. I'd just refer to lino, or should it be linet, Paul and suggest that she visit Specsavers
