Jewell Embroiled in Sexism Storm
Jewell Embroiled in Sexism Storm
Thursday, 12th Jan 2012 09:47

Town boss Paul Jewell is at the centre of a sexism storm this morning in the wake of his post-match press conference after the Blues' 2-1 defeat at Birmingham last night. Jewell is trending on Twitter and featuring on morning radio phone-ins.

The widely reported version of what the Town manager said regarding assistant referee Amy Fearn and the penalty the Blues weren't awarded is not an entirely accurate version of events.

As Jewell's press conference began, a reporter asked the Town boss, "I think everyone to a man thought it was a penalty, what's your view?" Jewell responded, "Unfortunately to every man, but not a woman.

“Although the referee didn’t have a very good view, the lineswoman, or whatever she's called, had a great view - it was a stonewall penalty and a sending off. You’ll have to ask her why she didn’t give it. It was a stonewall penalty."

As soon as the incompetent idiot but the word woman in the sentence he was doomed (well we have been hoping he was doomed for a long time obviously ME does not give two hoots what happens here either or he would be gone already and this would not be an issue)
And good shout for Kiwombya to come back great coach and manager

I have seen the interview and it is a nothing story. He wasn't being sexist...the role was "linesman" but a female "linesman"!? So he corrects himself and says "lines woman". The role is now "Referee's Assistant" of course but lets get on with the interview.

What an idiot. Anyone with half a brain knows that given football's problems with sexism, homophobia and racism that people in the game should watch what they say about female officials. I'm sure he meant no harm, but why mention it at all? Would he have made a funny remark about a man getting a decision wrong? Ooh, a female linesman, how hilarious!! Needs to grow up a bit.

Given PJ's past comments about online social networking, he'll be chuffed to bits that he's "trending on Twitter"!

Why do people keep touting Gus Poyet as Town manager? Brighton have a wonderful new stadium and great facilities - would this move be a step forward for him? Really?

The only thing that will save PJ now is a decent run of form - starting with a win against Blackpool on Saturday. He can complain about all the bad luck in the world but if we keep losing he's going to get sacked.

I thought the Barnsley game was the start of something a bit special but this is now proving something of a false dawn.

Oh dear...what a complete load of ball locks. The media should stick their trunks into the Johnson lunge last night as a main story....not this complete mash up they have concocted themselves. As for the Referee head...."clearly sexist"....must be a referee as he is unable to se anything 'clearly'. Just about sums up the terrible refereeing that is accepted nowadays.

Okay, i really don't post very often but today is the day.
Firstly to all those who think PJ's comment was sexist....seriously.....really....think about it....have another thought....there we go...its not really now is it.
Secondly. To all those who think PJ should go.....really...after just a year...really...think about it, Bobby needed the best part of 10 to turn us into pretty much the best we have ever been, George need 5 or was it 6 years to give us some good times...so have another thought, there we go. It all makes sense now doesn't it.

Within context, Paul Jewell's comments were clearly not sexist. What is far more pertinent is that the BBC gave a forum to Alan Leighton, "head of referee's union Prospect", to make ill-informed and damaging accusations live on national radio. That was absolutely outrageous — if Alan Leighton "head of referee's union Prospect" was of the opinion that one of his members had suffered a case of sexism within the workplace, then he should pursue it through the channels established by his union, not via mud-slinging in the media. Jewell should be seeking legal advice over Leighton's comments and the members that Leighton represent should be questioning his ability and judgement for the role he currently occupies. Leighton out!

tomisamos - I'm not saying that Warnock is too old, but he does keep saying that he wants to retire. As much as I think Jewell needs to go, we want someone long term not just for the next two years. Saying that I'd sooner have him than the last two numptys. Maybe he could have Holland as his number two to take over when he did retire.

Such a shame his quick wit is not matched with similarly speedy activity when it comes to signing a defender or two. This club of ours is suffering a slow and painful demise, please make it stop, please leave now.
