Crewe Bid Reportedly Turned Down
Crewe Bid Reportedly Turned Down
Wednesday, 18th Jan 2012 20:48

Reports from Cheshire claim Town have had a £2 million offer for Crewe’s 17-year-old midfielder Nick Powell turned down. The England U18 international is the third player the Blues made a bid for over the weekend.

Town would appear to be outsiders for Powell’s signature with Arsenal and Chelsea understood to be amongst a pack of Premier League clubs chasing the latest talent to roll off the Gresty Road conveyor belt.

Speaking earlier this month, Alex manager Steve Davis said he felt Powell needed to spend longer with the League Two club: “Nick is a young lad and in my opinion he’s not ready to go anywhere yet.

"He’s at the best club for his education and when the time is right, he’ll go.”

Ipswichtown4life... I am sorry but are you in the real world? With so many clubs after this lad why would Crewe be willing to loan him to us until the end of the season and let his contract run down and allow him to leave for nothing/compensation?

Even if this rumour is true, it is hugely unlikely that Town have bid £2million in cash. It is far more plausible that the bid was up to a potential value of £2million — i.e. it involved a series of clauses based on appearances, future sell-on fees and/or promotion to the Premiership within a certain timeframe. It is also an unfortunate situation that whilst Marcus Evans' money has stabilised our club, the fact that he is an enormously wealthy man means that selling clubs will always hold out for more money from Ipswich, hence the purchasing negotiations become more protracted. And, just while I'm on the subject, I would also like to point out to some of the people who post on here that not every player under the age of 25 currently plying his trade in League One or Two is necessarily "young and hungry". Some of them are what are commonly referred to as "not good enough to play at a higher level" (hence why they are at their current clubs).

That seems a lot of money for Town but if they are prepared to dish out 2 million quid then surely he is worth another few hundred thousand...

That's a thought gifkins,

But I don't think he would want to drop down maybe we could offer £1.5/£2million plus leadbitter to them cause they wanted him and otherwise he will leave for nothing in the summer!

If we can bid £2m for an unknown league 2 player surely we can make it up to £3m and activate Billy sharps release clause and he's a proven goalscorer at this level and only 26!!

£2m for a 17-year-old from L2 rebuffed?! Not saying the lad doesn't have talent and a bright future ahead of him, but I can't see how we can justify investing that much on him, especially given our defensive plight.

I'd rather see us focus on getting the Portsmouth duo or, come to think of it, any set of a least half decent centre backs and a proper right back!

COYBs!

If its true then its nice that ITFC are being linked with players like this, but in reality i think we need to set our sights a bit lower!
