Town Move for Five - Three From Pompey
Town Move for Five - Three From Pompey
Thursday, 26th Jan 2012 07:22

Town boss Paul Jewell has revealed that the Blues have lodged bids for five players, three understood to be from Portsmouth. The pursuit of Pompey pair Jason Pearce (pictured) and Joel Ward continues, with a third player also now targeted.

Jewell told the club site: “We are looking to improve the team and not just for this season but in seasons going on.

“We have offers in for five players. They are all players, young players, that are at an age that they can help take Ipswich Town on.

“We think the offers we have made are fair ones. Obviously we know the transfer deadline is approaching and we’d like to have some new faces here before the West Ham game but we will have to wait and see what happens.

“Signing a player now, any player, is so complicated — and so frustrating.”

The Blues are continuing to talk to Pompey about Pearce and Ward with the south coast side looking to raise cash to cover their unpaid PAYE bill.

A third Portsmouth player is being targeted with a bid for all three around the £2 million mark having been lodged since the second offer was turned down on Monday.

However, other clubs are also eyeing Portsmouth players and not every member of Michael Appleton's already very stretched squad will be for sale.

One of this morning’s tabloids links Fulham with a £500,000 move for Pompey’s 18-year-old Australian winger Ryan Williams, who would appear to very much fit the profile of the type of player Town are after, while Aston Villa are also claimed to be interested. Keeper Stephen Henderson has also been mentioned as a Newcastle target in recent weeks, while Hungarian striker Márkó Futács is another who could be attracting interest.

The Blues appear to have given up the chase for 17-year-old Powell having had their initial bid turned down, Jewell admitting that one of his proposed deals is “dead”.

Claims of Town interest in Michael Owen and ex-Blue Titus Bramble are somewhat unlikely, while Sheffield United full-back Matt Lowton is not believed to be amongst the five, despite continuing links with the 22-year-old, who was previously mentioned in connection with the Blues back in September.

Promising, but have learned not to get excited until they have signed.

Another thing that gives me hope is even when the world was crashing down last time we still knew the value of our players, we sold Diarra to Real Madrid for £20 mill, Johnson to Liverpool for £18 mill, tbh i cant hink of a player we lost on, off the top of my head. We sold Wilson to Stoke for £2 mill + Lawrence and Kitson.

Sean St Ledger was coming here a couple of weeks back, now he's not so I wont belive it until I see it, but we've always had trouble signing players, Sean Derry 18 months ago, Francis Jeffers after coming here on loan, bids being accepted and he changed his mind and went to Sheff Wed, but he turned out useless anyway and anyone remember the Hassan Kachloul saga from 2001?

Get the defenders in, offer £500k for the winger to help them pay their bills and loan him back for the season so their squad isnt on its knees. May help leverage Ward and Pearce.

The talks must have gone well to consider putting in a 3rd bid with a third player involved!

Pompey need to get cash in but also reduce the wage bill, the players we are going for are not likely to be on the high wage earner list so they are unlikely to take low offers.

Lets make a proper offer and get the deals done.

On the basis that Josh Carsons relatives wrote on here this week he is not injured and PJ is a liar who is playing with the boy why would anyone want to play for him and why would we believe anything that comes out of his mouth. The best thing he can do is walk and quick i would rather see us relegated with a good manager who can rebuild and repair the damage he is doing

Thanks cider blue for your comments and i fear you make a good point. Only thing in our favour is Pompey have got to prioritise paying back HMRC. Will this mean that players stop getting paid?

I love my job but i will not do it for free.

From the EADT report, one of the 5 is a dead deal. So we are currently in for 4 players.

Yeah Cooper, i dont know about the wages, theyve been paid so far, i think it is this HMRC which has stopped us being self sufficient, apparently they were always gonna need to inject the money for this as part of their financial plan to get the club back on its feet but alas our owner got arrested and we are now desperate, in need of selling players, im sure tho these would be the last on our list to sell. Im sure they are hoping to keep these and sell, the lawrence's or Kitsons of this club. Time will tell tho, the longer it goes on the more chance you'll have, altho i do hope other clubs come in because Pearce alone would be a bargain for the price youve put in for 3

HMRC say "pay up Pompy, pay up!!!"

I think if we pay all the fees in one upfront payment, we could secure all 3 players.

Think positive people.

We may just have half a new team by Tuesday night!

I think it's probably best if Jewell just keeps his trap shut so not to get our hopes up.

Players no longer make the decision about where to play - it is the agent !! The main reason players no longer sign for us is that agents look on sites such as this , see the drivel being posted and keep the players away !

What a Load of rubbish! Just sign the Pompey pair how long will they drag it out for.
Surely put a 3rd offer in they can't refuse.

Michael Owen??

Come on, stop faffing around and get this sorted out! If the figures quoted are to be believed I don't think Pompey will except it. Ward and Pearce are just what we need to sort out the mess we are in! I find myself getting excited at the thought of five bids then the realisation hits - negoiations by Clegg! I hate being pessimistic, but with our track record you can't fail to be!

Pompey have ducked and dived through situations like this before. Any old story to placate HMRC. They will not go into administration and so will not have to sell players.

i hear one is norris and the mystery 5th is that young bedford lad who scored the hat trick last week

We all know that 1 of the 5 is very likely to be Chris Tingay. Fits the profile and plays both centre and right defence.
Happy if we sign Halford, Pearce and Ward from Pompey, with Tingay on a free but that doesn't explain the mystery other player at the moment?
Who might it be?
That Polish Striker from Derby is available on a free and he's 23 (you know the one- Cyrzksk?)
