Town Move for Five - Three From Pompey
Town Move for Five - Three From Pompey
Thursday, 26th Jan 2012 07:22

Town boss Paul Jewell has revealed that the Blues have lodged bids for five players, three understood to be from Portsmouth. The pursuit of Pompey pair Jason Pearce (pictured) and Joel Ward continues, with a third player also now targeted.

Jewell told the club site: “We are looking to improve the team and not just for this season but in seasons going on.

“We have offers in for five players. They are all players, young players, that are at an age that they can help take Ipswich Town on.

“We think the offers we have made are fair ones. Obviously we know the transfer deadline is approaching and we’d like to have some new faces here before the West Ham game but we will have to wait and see what happens.

“Signing a player now, any player, is so complicated — and so frustrating.”

The Blues are continuing to talk to Pompey about Pearce and Ward with the south coast side looking to raise cash to cover their unpaid PAYE bill.

A third Portsmouth player is being targeted with a bid for all three around the £2 million mark having been lodged since the second offer was turned down on Monday.

However, other clubs are also eyeing Portsmouth players and not every member of Michael Appleton's already very stretched squad will be for sale.

One of this morning’s tabloids links Fulham with a £500,000 move for Pompey’s 18-year-old Australian winger Ryan Williams, who would appear to very much fit the profile of the type of player Town are after, while Aston Villa are also claimed to be interested. Keeper Stephen Henderson has also been mentioned as a Newcastle target in recent weeks, while Hungarian striker Márkó Futács is another who could be attracting interest.

The Blues appear to have given up the chase for 17-year-old Powell having had their initial bid turned down, Jewell admitting that one of his proposed deals is “dead”.

Claims of Town interest in Michael Owen and ex-Blue Titus Bramble are somewhat unlikely, while Sheffield United full-back Matt Lowton is not believed to be amongst the five, despite continuing links with the 22-year-old, who was previously mentioned in connection with the Blues back in September.

I'm starting to think that if we only managed to 'snap up' David Weir on a free before Jan 31st that this would constitute as a good transfer window for us!

Lets be honest and realistic, look at our league position, look at our teams fighting spirit or lack of it. We are in a dog fight with a bunch of overpaid over rated has beens or wanna be's. look at the points we have dropped from winning positions this season. when was the last time we managed to secure three points when a man down??. We simply are not a team and bringing in any new players now will have little bearing on our season. No i dont think we will go down but TBH it wouldnt be a bad thing ( look at Norwich ). Until we can train, work and set our stall out as a COMPLETE unit we cannot and will not move forward. The Club needs to take a long hard look at itself. We have the players to do well here already, we just dont have the spirit or the guts to prove it. Time to stand up and be counted......

I'm not confident of any bids being accepted, just hope we don't end up panic buying and paying over the odds, why not throw leadbitter into the pompey deal?

Obviously ward and pearce are 2, liam lawrence anyone, for the 3rd pompey player? Then, billy sharp and kane ferdinand. Very optimistic I know. But, with those players, we could have an interesting team.

@ RuffCider. if reports are to be believed you only paid 300K for Pearce from Bournemouth anyway. You stole their captain, after Portsmouth originally said he wasn't good anough to make it there from the youth.

Yes, you are just about hanging in there but don't hold it against our club for putting in offers. Don't forget we have been there and we have had to sell our best silver, its the way that the cookie crumbles. You should be blaming your previous owners for over spending, money a small club like Portmouth never had. You were in the third tier of English footbal for many years, then all of a sudden your are in the Premership, paying silly wages. What else can you expect? Footy has gone mad and the game is basically ruined because of player wages and greed. I remember when you won the Championship title and your fans were proper aarogant when they came down here. I have no sympathy whatsoever.

You seem to know the lot.
I dont see how your first paragraph is relevant, he wasnt released by the manager who brought him back this summer. Have Ipswich never released anyone they wish they hadnt.
And the second paragraph.....the rant.....its not the fans fault, its embarrasing the fans you met acted like that, tbh tho, i think alot of teams chant when promotion is assured, is that what you mean? Regardless of your opinions of our frail position and the over spending of our previous regimes, and we are not looking for sympathy, we enjoyed the ride, bu ti dont think the fans are guilty of anything other than believing what we were told. I wouldnt want any of them to go to your club but thats only because of the offers your management have alledgedly submitted. They are worth more. Despite us only paying £300000 for Pearce he has proved his worth and will only get better.

Good luck what ever happens, if it happens it happens, we'll just have to field Kanu and some youngsters. Good luck with survival.

RuffCider

Of course my first paragraph is relevant. Portsmth got Pearce from Bournemouth (who was their captain) You didn't mind taking Bournemouth's captain off them as they are a smaller club than you. who didn't want to let him go & we now want him from Portsmouth (we also wanted him in the summer), but now you don't like it as a bigger club has come in. You paid 300k in August, houses haven't increased in price since then so why should a football player's value increase in 5 months? Infact it appears we are being more than generous as we appear to be offering your club a profit on top of what you paid. You should be grateful. As for a rant - no I was merely stating the facts.

We have also read what your fans said about our club and manager on www.portsmouth.co.uk - not very kind I should add.

And as for wishing us luck in survival, remember you are only 3 point above us and with a pending administration hanging over you might get deducted 10 of those. So becareful not to be too smug as you are also on the brink of the third tier of English football - even without a deduction. You will obviously be wishing us relegation though, no doubt.

I think we will be very lucky to get all 3 targets from Pompey and this is a very ambitious move by the club. I will be happy if we just get Pearce at least as we all know that a decent centre back is priority number one!

ruffcider added 18:06 - Jan 26
I didnt know player values were related to the housing market, i hold my hands up you know more about that than me.
Im pretty sure we were late in with Pearce and i think it was brought to our attention because we had a 50% sell of fee attached to him and he was available and due to that it was a better deal for them to sell for less to us, than anyone else, at the time. I also think after losing out in the playoffs he was eager for a move away and bournemouth knew it.
oh and 'but now you don't like it as a bigger club has come in'.........nice. Childish, but 'clap clap'

Fact is Pompey owe HMRC and will have to cough up. We lost Captain Matt for £750K, Marcus Stewart £1 mill, Darren Ambrose £1mill and Herman for £1 mill because we had to except the best offer. Nothing personal Pompey just business, after being in administration the board didn't learn they went out offering silly loan fees of £20k per week and offering large contracts to players like Norris that you can't afford to pay. Not the fans fault I feel sorry for them but the club deserve what they get and learn the lesson they should have learned last year. Pompey run their financial affairs like the rest of the UK just plunging themselves further into debt rather than living within their means !

captaincrunch added 19:33 - Jan 26
to be fair player values can go up very quickly and house prices go up in a more uniform fashion right across the board unless a particular area suddenly becomes a lot more desirable so lets not compare player values to the housing market. apart from that i agree with Warkys. It is just business so dont take it too personally cider. If we don't get some of your players then someone else will and you will thank us/them for it if it means the club survives.
