Jewell: Intelligent Lawrence a Quick Learner
Jewell: Intelligent Lawrence a Quick Learner
Monday, 30th Apr 2012 07:00

Boss Paul Jewell implied that some of his senior players ought to follow the example of 16-year-old debutant Byron Lawrence after the Blues beat Doncaster 3-2 at the Keepmoat Stadium on Saturday. The Town manager was angry that experienced members of his squad have continued to make silly mistakes.

Jewell says the sort of errors which led to Rovers’ late goal on Saturday have cost the club points throughout the season: “We just do ridiculous things. The goal at the end there really annoyed me. At the start of the second half, we gave a daft freekick away, they took a quick one and they should have scored.

“They’re game-changing events and we need to start sharpening up mentally and in terms of intelligence. You keep on saying the same things and you hope [they sink in].

“Young Byron there, you only have to tell him something once and he’s intelligent enough to take it on board. And that’s what we want - intelligent footballers. Sometimes we’ve let ourselves down through a lack of concentration.”

So PJ is sngry that senior members of the squad made mistakes that led to goals, well I am furious that Sonko having been released played in the match and he made yet another mistake that led to the second goal just like he did the previous week against Millwall.

At least PJ has now decided that we need a spine in the team, I said so this time last year, we also need a chief ext. wait for it!!!

Village blue

Understand what you are saying but feel with the lack of defenders Jewell had little choice, Think if Cresswell was fit Sonko would not have played.

We were lucky are back 4 kept injury free for so long later in the season or we would have been in very big trouble

I think it would've been a better choice to have played Kennedy for one last time and drop Sonko like he had done with Leadbitter.

Would rather that PJ had kept Smith and Delaney as CB's and had either Ainsley or Wight at LB on Saturday. Oh well thats what Pj calls giving the youngsters a go roll on next season.

Byron.
A teenager called Byron.
And he started to shave, and have one off the wrist,
And want to see girls, and go out and get p***ed,
A man called Byron, this man called Byron.

I like PJ, but.... the man who picks the team is complaining that the people he picks lack intelligence? It's certainly obvious someone lacks intelligence.

As a couple of people have already said : I don't disagree that our players lack intelligence, but Jewell being the one to say it reminds me of an old saying that involves pots and kettles.

This is a prime example of a manager trying to sell a young player iv seen this boy play in the under 18s in which he has struggled so to put him in the 1st team and constantly "BIG" him up is pathetic and not fair on the kid just trying to bump he's price up. Very similar situation to Joe White the way Jewell was talking about him last year he was the next best thing and when Cressie gets injuried he still dont play him and has slaughtered him in the press, Jewell is destroying the youngsters confidence now which is wrong. You should never build a youngster up to something there not to then knock them down. Josh Carson is twice the player Lawrence is andI have seen both play for the under 18s. The sooner Jewell is out the club the better
