Town and Cardiff Sound Out Ex-Posh Keeper
Town and Cardiff Sound Out Ex-Posh Keeper
Sunday, 13th May 2012 22:11

TWTD understands that Town and Cardiff City have both spoken to ex-Peterborough keeper Joe Lewis since his release by the London Road club. The Bluebirds have so far shown the more serious interest in the former England U21 international, who began his career at Norwich City.

The 24-year-old is leaving Posh this summer having fallen out of favour during 2011/12 following a six-month spell on the sidelines after breaking a kneecap in last year’s League One play-offs.

Lewis is familiar to members of the coaching staff at both Town and Cardiff. Prior to his January 2008 £400,000 move to Peterborough, the 6ft 6in tall keeper came through the ranks at Norwich where he worked with Blues goalkeeper-coach Malcolm Webster and Town Academy manager Sammy Morgan.

Amongst the current Cardiff staff, Lewis also worked with keeper-coach James Hollman, who coincidentally held the same position at Portman Road until last summer, and was a youngster with the Canaries during manager Malky Mackay’s time as a player in Norfolk. Current Bluebirds first choice keeper David Marshall was a team-mate at Carrow Road.

In addition to his five U21 caps, Lewis has played for England at U16, U17 and U19 levels and was called up to the full squad in 2008 for friendlies against Trinidad and Tobago and the USA, while he spent spells on loan at Stockport and Morecambe when with the Canaries. During his 190 games for Posh, he helped them to two promotions from League One and one from League Two.

Manchester United’s Polish keeper Tomasz Kuszczak is understood to be top of Blues boss Paul Jewell’s list of potential new number ones, but with several other higher profile clubs in Germany and England also interested is likely to have to look at alternative options.

Birmingham’s Colin Doyle has also been linked but with sources close to Portman Road playing down the Blues’ interest.

I am talking to a Posh fan right now and Lewis has turned from a half decent keeper into a total waste of space. Unless our keeping coach can get him sorted out then not worth the effort of writing up the contract. Bit of a gamble really which is not what we should be doing for a first choice keeper.

Boyd on the other hand is a very good player but will cost £1M minimum.

CLEGG ON FACE: A number of PR gaffes to choose from, including... Giving a recovering gambling addict £250,000 of club funds to pay off debts; saying you won't repeat the same mistakes with contract renewals, and then repeating the same mistake with contract renewals; dishing out two different punishments for the same crime, including fining a gambling addict who owes nasty people a lot of money. BUT, the award goes to...chief exec Simon Clegg, for the handling of the abandoned Middlesbrough match that meant a large number of people (eg. servicemen) paid for 90 minutes of football and only got 38 – while those that could make the re-run paid AGAIN.

Let's look at is positively rather than the usual lack of optimism in this forum

-Economically, he would be perfectly viable as a transfer.
-He has plenty of experience at this level and, at the age of 24, has time to mature, develop and become a well-rounded goalkeeper at this level and, potentially, the level above. I've seen him play, he makes some fine saves but is sometimes inconsistent...the importance is the possibility to make these "fine saves"...inconsistency can be worked upon, nurtured and embellished.

Let's stop complaining all the time...at least he wasn't the keeper who let in 7 goals this season in the fixture Ipswich Town v Peterborough United...

Some on here say Joe is error prone,,, He cannot be so error prone as Flop Fulop, what a goalkeeping disaster yesterday,it looked like he had been paid by Arsenal to throw the game ?????? anothe Dark Lord signing ????

I agree Kviollet. My first choice like many others would be Westwood but given Lewis is on a free it's economically a really good deal for someone with his experience who's still only 24. I'd be surprised if a 24 year old keeper wasn't inconsistent to be honest.

Would be a good challenge for Malcolm Webster. At 6'6 and many years to come ahead of him, this is the type of deal we want isn't it? A keeper who can be our number one for many seasons to come?

No idea why Cardiff would want him!? Are they selling Marshall to raise cash!?

Why did we get rid of Fukkop?

For god sake Jordan Rhodes has been gone for 2 years now get over it!! We got £8m for Wickham which i believe evens out the Rhodes sale anyway. Joe Lewis would be better than Kuszczack, younger with less wages and never rated Kuszczack anyway. I still say Scott Loach would be good

Why does the Wickham sale even out the diabolical decsion to sell Rhodes ?

Rhodes sold £750,000 goes on to score 70 goals over last few years ,
Fulop bought £750,000 absolute clown released on a free ,more excellent business from Keane

Lewis could be a very good keeper with the right coaching ,would like Boyd also

Sindre94 stop sticking up for Clegg - you tell me what he has done for this club and I'll listen, but assuming it is the Chief Exec's job to finally nail players down and get them to sign on the dotted line, can't think of far too many players who've been "set to sign" only for them to suddenly dart off somewhere else. If you can name any goods things I'm willing to listen, but struggling at the moment, so please enlighten us on the inner workings of Ipswich Town Football Club, as you clearly have such in-depth knowledge.

Surco72 - yes selling Rhodes was the worst decision this club ever made and it pains me like everyone else every time he scores but when you look at Wickham this year hes done nothing so getting £8m back in the bank was good business. Besides, it was Keane who wanted Rhodes out no one else.

Not good enough for me. what about Doyle, Heaton, Guzan...

I'd love to get Heaton here. Westwood and Heaton are my first choices.

Michael you clearly dont know what you are talking about Clegg let Rhodes not Keane if you read what Keane said,he said he would not have come to Ipswich if he had realized what Clegg was like in transfer dealings

i am a die hard fan who wakes up everyday and sees a page full of who we are after and to me a most other people out there its a waste of time we tell everybody who we after and then lose out we then spend all transfer window getting people who dont wana come and we think the easy option is to get some 1 on loan and look what happened to our goalkeepers and marcus evans you must wonder if you are ever going to get your cash back and the answer is no you say you have a plan and its costing you £5mill a year and for what a mid table team with attendences dropping every game as people dont want to spend their own money on a crap day out

@itfc1981. Not at all he serves the role of being the face of Evans and his board but they're the ones pulling the strings. I'm pretty sure he presents the offers worked put by the board/Evans. He has a lot of input, I'm sure, but far from ultimate power that many have been suggesting. He seems to have become a blamestorming target for those who need someone to blame.

Allie- ever heard of a .?

Keane wanted to sell Rhodes, so Clegg sanctioned it. End of.
While Keane did say he wouldn't have come here if he'd met Clegg before agreeing to come, he didn't go any further into specifics about the reasons, aka Clegg was useless in the transfer market.
I think Clegg does get a rough ride by fans, but then I don't think he comes across as a particuarly nice person. A bit snobby and detatched, which probably goes against him more than his ability.

Hi Phil. Do you know when PJ is back from his holiday? The only reason I ask is because, with a bit of luck, we may start to get some definite transfer activity. . . . hopefully

Malcolm Webster is a very experienced goalkeeping coach. I'd trust his judgement as regards whether or not anyone is up to the job. On the other hand, he may well not be able to get in his first choice for all the reasons many posters have already mentioned on here many times before.

i used to play football at school with the lad and his brother!!
he was 8ft when he was 10 years old!
but sayin that everytime ive ssen him for posh he's made a clanger!
he usually has a clanger every 2 games so not what we want!
we need a keeper aged 28-32 who is solid no.1 , even if we spend 2 - 3 million it has to be done.

"Clegg sanctioned the worst sale in living memory. Of that there is no doubt. Selling a player who scored 41 goals in yths and resers is a disgrace, all those involved are culpable." itfc 1981

I could not agree more and if Cardiff are looking at this keeper then we wont get him but then again if he is cr,p as some have mentioned and Cardiff withdraw he will come here.

Clegg out and Evans put the club up for sale 'son'

Clegg has his faults but much of the criticism he receives on this forum is harsh. I'm quite glad he is ensuring the club is run on a sound financial basis, and not driving us towards financial oblivion (Portsmouth style!)

Think my first choice for a keeper would be Guzan. Lewis seems to have gone downhill a little over the past 2 years, making a number of costly errors and spending much of this season as 2nd choice. The Norwich connection would not help him either, and it may only take a dip in form for things to turn nasty (remember Andy Marshall?)

I'm told posh fans were against him from the start because he replaced a club legend, Mark Tyler. and towards the end the knives were out again because he let his contract run out. However, in season 2009/10 he swept the board for poshplayer of the season awards. Dos'nt sound he was making clangers every other game then.
