Town Amongst Clubs Watching Icelander
Town Amongst Clubs Watching Icelander
Sunday, 20th May 2012 18:48

Town, Everton and Anderlecht sent representatives to Norway this afternoon to watch Lillestrøm striker Björn Bergmann Sigurdarson net a final-minute winner as his side beat Sogndal 1-0 at their Ã…rÃ¥sen Stadion. The 21-year-old Icelander is rated as the top talent currently playing in the Norwegian Premier League.

Sigurdarson started his career with hometown club ÍA Akranes in Iceland before joining Lillestrøm in January 2009. His current contract is up at the end of the 2014 Norwegian season, which runs through the summer.

We understand the Blues were keeping an eye on the 6ft 1in tall youngster last season - during which he scored eight goals - and are continuing to monitor his progress with plenty of other clubs alerted by his recent record of having scored 11 goals in his last five games in all competitions.

Capped once by Iceland's senior side, as well as at U21, U19 and U17 levels, Sigurdarson has been compared to former Finnish international striker Jari Litmanen, while the Norwegian media have more recently referred to him as ‘Zlatan’ in reference to Sweden international Zlatan Ibrahimovic.

Wolves, now managed by Norwegian StÃ¥le Solbakken, a former Lillestrøm player, have been linked with a £3 million offer for Sigurdarson with Solbakken reported to have been planning a move for the frontman while boss of his previous club, German side FC Köln.

Sigurdarson’s half-brothers are former Stoke, Coventry and Plymouth midfielder Bjarni Gudjonsson, Thordur Gudjonsson, who was also a midfield player with Stoke, Derby and Preston, and ex-Aston Villa, Wolves, Leicester, Burnley and Huddersfield man Joey Guðjónsson, another midfielder.

The Icelander is very much in the mould of the type of young, hungry player Paul Jewell has said he’ll be targeting this summer but with top flight clubs such as Everton already showing interest, the Blues would appear to be outsiders for his signature.

A foreign player linked with us? Great stuff - lets hope this is the sign of improved scouting?

Sigh! In the days of George Burley, we might actually have signed a guy like this. Times change....

It cuts both ways. Just because other clubs are watching doesn't mean they will make a bid. But this does seem like a long shot at this stage.

The Norwegian TV2 news said Ipswich were at Åråsen. So I think it's a good signing of decent scouting

I hope the scout has come up with some alternative, less obvious options, or I would be questioning his credentials.

would love it to be true but it does make you wonder how we could afford 3million for a relative unknown but not for getting Rhodes back x-)

get him in - also just seen on BBC Sport that Steve Howard has been released from Leicester - know we moan about old players (he is 36) but could still be a half decent squad player if signed on an incentive filled 1 year deal? Not the 20 goal a season whippet we are after, but might plug a few gaps up front at times?

No chance! We won't be coming here. More utter nonscence.

We've got more chance of signing Messi.

All we seem to do is watch these so called signings - never really do anything about them though,do we..just what are we waiting for once again?..for other clubs to put their money where their mouths are, that's what...come on Ipswich, let's get this transfer window moving.
