Ward Completing Palace Move
Ward Completing Palace Move
Monday, 28th May 2012 11:02

TWTD sources have learnt that Blues target Joel Ward is currently in the process of completing his move to Crystal Palace. The 22-year-old had been chased by Town since January with Leeds, Blackpool, Burnley and Sheffield Wednesday also showing interest to various degrees since the end of the season.

The versatile defender or midfielder is understood to have been offered a four-year deal by the Eagles, who emerged as favourites last week despite offering lower personal terms than some of the other interested clubs. Palace’s relative closeness to his family in Portsmouth is likely to have played a major part in his decision.

Ward, a one-time Bournemouth loanee, is set to undergo a medical and sign on the dotted line later today.

His decision not to join the Blues will be a blow to manager Paul Jewell, who has been in the hunt for Ward since January when a bid was accepted but personal terms turned down.

In March, Ward was at Portman Road to talk about a loan move before the deadline but Pompey’s administrator pulled the plug on the switch with the crisis club then still having a chance of salvaging their Championship status.

How dare this player make a perfectly reasoned decision based on factors important to him, and not simply plump for Ipswich for the sake of it. And as for TWTD constantly reporting on this story, I'm going to demand a refund and insist they stop making me view this site against my free will.

Oh, hang on.......

More old sh1te. Move on and report something of interest. People going to other clubs does not interest me, however, someone coming to ITFC well thats a different kettle of fish. COYB's.

Let's not kid ourselves and face reality, first and foremost he has gone to Palace because he was after a four year deal, like Pearce when he signed for Leeds, and Town have reportedly said they will only offer initial contracts of 1-2 years!

Phew, good job we didn't waste too much debating that one.

Although very disappointing Clegg and PJ failed to land one of their top targets, it's time to draw a line and move on. Plan B please PJ.

Yes I support Palace, yes I think this transfer dilemma has gone on a while, but the guy should make a decision based on what he thinks is best for him, he's having to leave a club he doesn't really want to leave, I'd love to have players who have that sort of commitment. Some comments on how crap Palace are compared to you is sad, you only finished two places above us this season. It's been over a decade since you were last in the premiership and five years since you flirted with the playoffs, you're not a big club and nor our we, lets leave it as that.

I think people are aggrieved at Ward, not so much for his eventual decline to come to Town, (that's his prerogative) but more for the apparent procrastination in deciding, (we spoke to him over 5 months ago).

You get the feeling that he has had to be told which would be the best offer to accept - a bit odd for a supposed 22yr old lad.

Good luck to him. But I doubt it will affect Town's form much next season - nor Palace's tbh !

Well one month gone out of the three in close season and no one signed. We went in for 3 players from Portsmouth and didn't get one.Correct me if I am wrong but since PJ took over dont think Ipswich have managed to sign ANY player he wanted where there has been serious competition from another club NOT ONE.Not Jewells fault must be the Organ Grinder as the Monkey only does what hes told (Like his namesake the deputy prime minister).
Interesting that Marcus Evans seems to be getting more directly involved in transfer activity(or lack of it);but doesn't seem to have got the hang of it yet,as notice one of Phils earlier posts about Ward gave impression it was take it or leave it .Not the way to encourage good talent to Portman Rd methinks.
Over this saga as with several others length,or shortness in our case,of contracts have been mentioned, and of course the new rules linking expenditure on players to gate receipts.
If however Mr Evans is serious about getting Town back to the big time he must start competing with other clubs where players contracts are concerned, otherwise will never get to the promised land and decline of the past ten years will continue.

seasider, well said. I agree completely. Someone at Portman Road (Evans/Clegg or both of them) really hasn't got the concept of negotiation. A take it or leave it approach may see the club not overspending in the short term, but could have disastrous consequences in the future as we could consistently miss our targets.
Chances are we'll hear another story at the end of next season about how we've got our transfer policy wrong if we fail to land our priority targets and the top men at Portman Road realise this is not the way to go.
Now is the time to invest and attract the players we need if a Premier League return is to happen, otherwise FFP comes in and we wont have a lot of money for transfers and wages if things don't improve and we can't get more than 16,000 in on match days.
