Jewell Confident Chambers Will Sign Next Week
Jewell Confident Chambers Will Sign Next Week
Thursday, 5th Jul 2012 13:34

Town boss Paul Jewell says he’s as confident as he can be that former Nottingham Forest skipper Luke Chambers will be joining the Blues next week. The 26-year-old was at Portman Road on Tuesday for talks, to undergo a medical and to look around the stadium and training facilities.

Jewell, who has Chambers right at the top of his list of potential summer signings, told the club site: "I've met Luke on a number of occasions over the summer to talk football.

“He's very keen to come here and we've been speaking on the phone regularly over the last day or two.

“We're very hopeful it will get done next week, but until it's signed, sealed and delivered, it's not done.

"I've been in football long enough to know that there are a lot of factors in getting a player signed and I've learnt before that you can never be 100 per cent confident, but I'm as certain as I can be at this stage that we're almost there."

Yep not looking good now. C'mon PJ surely you've got other plans you've been working on and haven't made the same mistake as last year (St. Ledger)?! He's had plenty of time to discuss it and is clearly holding out so bye bye move to next targets. Doesn't sound that good anyway.

Guess what. Virtually every deal at every club takes its time getting done and dusted. We aren't unique. Just because some of you read 'this team has signed this player and that' doesn't mean its been done overnight!

Because some folk spend all their time on sites like this, they fool themselves in thinking we're taking longer than anyone else. Swap your position to another club, and you'll be saying exactly the same thing!

And on a slightly different note. Who wouldn't look at what options are out there when changing jobs!? You'll be both pretty foolish and naive to think otherwise...

Ipswich24, I share your concerns. After all the guy is effectively unemployed at the moment and won't be 'earning' until he signs a contract with somebody. He says we're the only club in the frame and PJ says he is confident as he can be that he will sign next week. But why delay? I suspect that while he may be keen, his missus may be less so and he is having to charm her into leaving the Midlands.

Hey Ho! Keep watching this space!

At the end of the day hes got to sort a lot to sort out . I just think if Jewell had of been there on the first arrival then things may of already been sorted . Bit unprofessional !! fingers crossed anyway .

Dosent it occour to anyone he is hanging on for a club to come in with a decent offer and not the pathetic one we have put on the table? If he does sign it will mean that with Cresswell we will have 2 players out of the 18 we need to get promoted.

Mr Jewell you do an awful lot of talking - shame you and your colleagues are not as fluent in convincing players to sign for us - I WONDER WHY ????

Another hopeless and hapless situation - to add to the many previous.

The current plight of the Club and associated posts - have certainly opened my eyes as to the naivety of certain supporters. Take note - no names mentioned.

Bet Clegg and Jewell will love you all to bits.

This is getting stupid now. Yes, he needs to think over whether to sign for us or not, but PJ himself said he'd been talking to him for a while and Chambers said he was only talking to one club. Therefore he has had lots of time to mull it over. It seems clear to me he is waiting in the hope that Forest takeover is completed and they offer him a new deal or he gets a better deal elsewhere. If these things dont materialise then he will sign for us. As much as we want him to sign as he is a player in a position where we are in desperate need someone, I really am unconvinced he wants to come here and would only come if there is no better alternative. Could we truly believe he would be 100% commited to us after this?

......... someone will soon suggest that the player needs to check the Bus Timetable to Woodbridge before signing - such is the weird thinking.

Every other reason has just about been given - except the real fact is that we are no longer convincing - especially when it comes to meeting Clegg and Jewell.

Ever wondered why ?????? - I doubt not.

Good evening h32 - takes one to recognise one! You talk of other posters being naive yet still cling on to the believe that signing players is all about the manager and others convincing players to sign. Maybe we should get a top double glazing salesman in? Unless its a lower league player stepping up its all about the money nowadays.

buryblue77 added 22:09 - Jul 5
stringtheory, if it's all about the money how come we keep missing out on other players to clubs who are on the same level as us. Says to me that the club isn't offering realistic Championship standard wages, either because it can't or wont, either way that's not a good situation as we'll always miss out on the calibre of player we need to move us on.

buryblue77 - you could be right, maybe we're not outbidding these other clubs. Not sure why, maybe we want to live within our means and not increase the debt too much. Of course, with the right manager it can be done without money, we've seen that happen within spitting distance! Have we got the right manager, well there's a good topic for a debate!

buryblue77 added 22:40 - Jul 5
stringtheory, I completely understand if the club doesn't want to increase its debt, we wouldn't want to see our club go the way of Portsmouth or worse still Rangers.
I think it hurts all the more to see the Nodgers having got the right manager and doing it on a low budget, trouble is that type of manager isn't easy to come by.
Is PJ the right man for the job? 3 months ago I would still have definitely said yes, I am still behind PJ, he has done it all before, but equally when he hasn't had the money to spend (Sheff Wed and Derby) it hasn't worked out for him.
The first two months will shape our season, if significant improvement hasn't been achieved then I shall change my pro (just about, still) PJ stance.

Can't help but think this would have been sorted had Jewell been here when Chambers had a medical and was shown round the ground?
Lets just hope he sign's as we are all desperate for a Hunter,Beattie,Macauley,De Vos etc.
Its about time we had that tough central defender who could potentially captain the side and marshall the team from the back.Chambers could be that man?
Thats why this is by many and myself see this as such an important signing.
With the apparent lack of good central defenders at this level available forget about any other position at this point lets just get this deal done!!

I dont know the reasons why he is stalling to sign, it definately sounds like he is waiting to see whats happening and are there any offers coming from teams nearer so he doesnt have to move, if that is the case then why blame the club or those running it.

But for those who think we have always been a glamour club with players beating down the door to sign think again. There was a time when itfc under the captaincy of Ian atkins in the old 2nd division were asked to provide their own packed lunches because the club were so skint. I wonder how prospective signings liked the sound of bringing their own sarnies for away games. I dont believe this idea ever came to fruition but it was thought about. None of us like the idea of being an average 2nd tier side, we all want better . But we are stable and slowly we will be heading in the right direction.

Back in the Eighties we didnt have this wonderful site to keep us up to date with every fart, burp, link, rumour, story and non-story 24/7, did we? we were so less aware back then.

So for those slating the club and saying these are the worst times in itfc history , you are way off the mark...coyb

Yep good point Dissboy about the info we receive now days compared to decades ago - I still believe it's more about money now than it was in the 80's, then it was about a player recognizing the stature of the club, believing in the manager and how he would fit into the team in order to make the club successful and then the benefits from that. Recent times has shown (the last 10 years or so) it's about the agent getting firstly a decent weekly wage for the player and secondly being in a team in the limelight with the ability to win trophies, in reference to the Championship - the wages and possibility of getting promoted.

I still think keeping hold of a manager after a few seasons when the club is 'stagnating' in the league never helps the profile of the club when attracting decent transfer targets, it makes me wonder if Chambers asks how much the owner will spend during the next season or so in order to try and get promotion, that we'll never know but a question a player would probably ask.

Controversial but, our club has never been "mighty" we rent off the council ffs. We have been very good and played lovely passing football. Who, who posts on this website, actually lives in Ipswich? Just say aye or narp.

I don't live in Ipswich but have probably spent enough at Portman Road over the years to buy a second home there.
