Blues in Heskey Talks
Blues in Heskey Talks
Friday, 20th Jul 2012 10:50

Town are in talks with former England international Emile Heskey. The 34-year-old is out of contract having left Aston Villa earlier in the summer.

A national newspaper broke the news of the Blues' interest in the veteran striker earlier today, with TWTD sources more locally backing up the report.

Last night, Blues boss Paul Jewell revealed that Town are close to making their fourth signing of the summer with a big frontman in the Heskey mould very much amongst his targets.

Heskey started his career with Leicester City before moving on to Liverpool, Birmingham, Wigan and then finally Villa.

Jewell previously signed 6ft 2in tall Heskey whilst at Wigan during the summer of 2006.

Poll: In favour of Emile Heskey joining the Blues?

If anyone thinks Heskey will come on the cheap then you are wring, he will be looking for a last gasp pay day and his agent will be contacting gullible idiots who he may have stiched up before - Jewell (have Hull been linked?)
If he is willing to come on the cheap then he would sign for a club nearer to where he lives and with better hopes of promotion.
Its all Tosh !

I would absolutely love to see heskey in an ipswich shirt next season for 2 reasons:

1. I actually think he could be an effective championship striker for another couple of seasons.
2. My non-ipswich friends are much more likely to watch ipswich if heskey is playing!

Lukaku would be a great signing, mixed feelings about Heskey a good foil but I think there are better options out there.

Surely not. I'm hoping this is more of a ploy to panic Derby into dropping the price for Davies...

my main concerns would be wage demands, his fitness & whether he would give 100%. If he is willing to fit into our wage structure, gets himself fit & gives his all then I think it might be worth the gamble. Yes he may end up a failure like Bowyer & Ingimarsson but he has the ability to be very good at championship level, he would give us some much needed height upfront & I feel could benefit Chopra's game enormously

25 games last season, 15 starts, 10 as sub, 1 goal! He was used as a midfielder tho, his hold up play is second 2 none, chops wold thrive off him, I say give him a contract, could be the clincher for promotion, COYB!!!!!!!!!

This would be a great signing. He's a footballers' footballer- perfect foil for Chops- his Champ golden boot odds would look very good if Hesky signs. As a striker (albeit very amateur) the difference between knowing that you can run past Hesky whenever the ball is thrown towards him in the belief that you'll get a good return on effort investment with flick ons etc and not really expecting the ball to stick is huge. It changes the shape of the team, makes space in behind the front two as the defenders are forced to turn for fear of a second phase of play, and the space in behind for the more creative midfielders to move into forces the oppo to close up, protect their back four and surrender possession. This would be perfect for an Ipswich team with ambition of keeping the ball and playing some good stuff. Marvellous signing if it comes off, IMO. Ask anyone who's played with him. Yes similar to Scotland, BTW, but like a 3.0 litre engine is to a 1.6, bigger, stronger and more of a thoroughbred. Nowt against JC, mind.

dont know what to think on this one ,i used to rate Heskey at one time ,but that was waaaaay back,i think he is ''blown out'' in Prem, but Championship could give him new lease of life,I would be surprised if this move happened though to be honest .

Hmmm............not sure about this one. Yes we need a battering ram for Chopra to benefit from but for all his bulk, Heskey is not the most agile or combative, particularly now he's in his twilight years as a player. Just checked him out on Wiki and he has just over 150 goals in over 750 games. Not a great return but the likes of Owen Rooney all enjoyed playing with him. His wage concerns me. Similar in many ways to the Bowyer transfer this. If it happens, only time will tell if it's the right move.

Would be a great signing ! , Heskey gets ALOT of stick but he was our best player along with Gerrard in the 2010 World Cup !

I would be happy with this signing , Chopra could play off Heskey well .

Sign Him up !

I can see why some people have reservations regarding age and goals, but he's someone who should be judged by team goals when he plays- any statos out there want to enlighten us on those kinds of figures?

As for his age- even at 26 he wasn't quick or agile- it's never been his game, so even if he is getting slower and less mobile, it should be outweighed by his experience and class if he can stay injury free.

I was a bit unsure about this when I first heard about this possible signing, having thought about it, if we can get Heskey in on a one year deal maybe with an option of a second year then it would be a risk worth taking.

I remeber Michael Owen & Rooney both saying he was the best strike partner they have ever played with as he is a good foil and does a lot of work that goes un-noticed. And I also remeber reading an article with John Terry that said he is horrible to defend against as he alwas puts himself about and is very hard to man mark.

Apparentely he keeps himself super fit as well so I cant see that being an issue, think the only thing puting people off that I can see is his scoring record but if you know anything about football then you would know that if you buy/sign Emile Heskey you are signing him to be a foil for another striker not an out and out goal scorer.

Think Heskey and Chopra could do very well at this level, think I am going to side with the 'sign him up' brigade on this one!

anyone who thinks lukaku has a chance of coming here is a fool.. if he doesnt get a loan move to a premiership club he'll go abroad.. not the championship

Please, we do not need to go down this route. Too old, too expensive and too injury prone. This would be nothing more than a 'quick fix' even if it works out in the short term. Our younger players as well as us, as fans, deserve more than this. This smacks of desperation to me when the longer term view needs to take precedence now. Only worth a punt if he accepts a performance related contract which of course he won't.

Like many I'm a bit undecided. Told so many jokes about him in the past so I think they may come back to haunt me . I shouldnt really support the move but I starting to see the attraction of a 1 year contract. As many have said players seem to love him as a strike partner and defender hate him. Maybe the rough and tumble of the championship may prove to be a suitable stage for him

One_Matty_Holland added 13:34 - Jul 20
Admittedly a laughing stock at international level and in the prem but would be a cracking partner for chops in the championship, would even fancy him to get goals. Jewell's comment about not having the budget to have three keepers on the books suggests we can't afford the wages that Heskey would be on.

nitroblue1970 added 13:38 - Jul 20
this may make us become even more of a joke in this division, or he could be a huge hit! Maybe worth a punt if the wages are sorted out. I would imagine hes hardly bothered about money after his numerous moves. Even PJ can see if hes going to be an assett or not by the end of september. If not bye bye, if hes doing well then keep him...as Urchin says this division and its physicality may suit him particularly in a deeper role...
