Jewell: Davies Fee Too Much
Jewell: Davies Fee Too Much
Saturday, 28th Jul 2012 18:01

Boss Paul Jewell says the Blues and Derby are still a long way from agreeing a fee for long-time target Steve Davies. The Town manager has been chasing the 24-year-old frontman all summer.

Jewell said: “Steve Davies is a player I took to Derby and one I admire, but it’s all down to cost. If the deal was right for us and we could afford him, we’d take him.

“People want you to go out and buy players but it’s not a bottomless pit I’ve got, so I’ve got to be prudent in the way I try and work.

“I spoke to Derby and Nigel Clough over the summer and asked about the fee and the fee is far in excess [of what we can afford]. Don’t ask me what that is because that’s between the clubs, but I haven’t got that amount of money.”

Derby are understood to value Davies at £1 million with the Blues believed to be willing to pay around half that.

Yes, that's true teams like Reading have achieved promotion with a manager making shrewd acquisitions and in a way PJ is doing this too but it seems that it's PJ who is being penalised for previous regimes overspending.

Michaeldownunder, I'm with you on Bowyer, I think he did well and more so when coming off the bench, it seems that when we signed him there were a lot against having him here and took every opportunity to knock him. I would also imagine that due to our tightening of finances we wouldn't have been able to offer him anywhere near what he was on, I do recall PJ saying that he had talked to Bowyer about him staying though.

As has been stated on here previously the Wickham money goes towards the running costs of the Club where expenditure far outweighs income. Even with the Wickham money which will undoubtedly be paid in instalments the Club will incur losses so it is hardly fair to ask where has the Wickham money gone - simple it goes towards running a loss making organisation.

I think £1m is way way over the top although can blame derby who only want as big a return as possible.

Considering he hardly played for 4 years due to injury, perhaps a fee/per game agreement can be reached with a minimal sign on fee initially.

As for Bowyer, yeah he didnt do too badly last season at all, althugh I still felt he is a long way away from the bowyer at leeds, father time unfotunately caught up with him like all footballers in the end.

But town need to get a wriggle on, time is ticking by and I think they still need a 2nd centre half and striker.

This saga with Davies needs to be brought to an end in the next few days. Either get an agreement with Derby or move onto another target. The lad is not playing friendlies and even if he signs for us this week will have precious little time to get used to playing in our team before Blackburn match. We have had too many signings in last few seasons who have signed in August, lacking match fitness, not having gelled into the team and taking 6 months to get fully fit and settled. If Davies is who PJ wants to play upfront with Chops or Murphy's role, we need to get him now

Agree with radiogaga

To be successfull in the Championship their has to be a good spirit week in week out and that's why i'm pleased with Jewell's transfer policy, when Keane was in charge he splashed the cash on the likes of Leadbitter and co which in the end did us nothing, and as radiogaga eluded to Reading didn't really spend and look where they are now so without sounding to naive maybe this could be our season....

I see that Bristol City have had a bid of £1.5m for Baldock accepted by West Ham. That looks like good value to mr & in such circumstances PJ has previously stated that money will be made available. Not only do I think he would do well for us, I think he would be sold at quite a profit, if needs be, in a couple of years which also justifies the outlay.
I would still look to sugn Davies as we need a centre forward type, strong & good in the air, to compliment the striker in a partnership, especially if Cresswell stays because of his quality of delivery.
Baldock & Davies for between £2 - £2.5m would be sensational business and along with Chops & Scotland would leave us with a promotion winning frontline.
Yes I know, it's early & I'm still dreaming, but nobody will be reading a story this old anyway.

£1M for a top Championship Striker? Good price IMO. David JOhnson cost £1.1M back in 1997. If the club want to get in teh top 6 then we must sign players like Davies. He is a quality striker with a proven champ goal scoring record and the right age. He has been unlucky with injuries, but anyone that can come back from a fractured skull and have the confidence to head a ball once gain and score goals almost stright away is top notch. Sign him up!! We got £8m for Wickham.

I read today that Davis is about to sign for Bristol City for £500,000! Doesn't reflect well on us if we can't afford to compete with Bristol City for a player whose fee is too high for us at that price!!! Guess this now confirms that the £8m got for Wickham won't be used for team improvements either?

Ah well, quite pleased with the signings we have managed, but I fear it will just lead to another season of mid-table mediocrity.
