Jewell Hopeful He Could Add to Squad Before Blackburn Clash
Thursday, 16th Aug 2012 12:55

Blues boss Paul Jewell is hopeful that he could add to his squad before Saturday’s opening Championship game of the season at home to Blackburn. Town have lodged a bid for an unnamed player and are waiting for a response from his club.

Jewell said: “We’ve made a bid this morning for a player and we’re waiting for that bid to be accepted or not.

“It’s a player that we’d like to bring to the club. We want to bring players here if we can, in the main, for three or four years, for the future."

The Town manager, who played down the chances of former Blue Connor Wickham returning on loan, says the previous offer he made over the weekend has been turned down and this is a different player: “We got knocked back on that one, the one we made this morning we’re waiting on that one. It’s not the same player, that one looks like it’s dead in the water.

“We tried to resurrect it, but it hasn’t happened. I’m hopeful that this one, if it happens, could be before the weekend.”

Why all the moaning? I'm not PJs greatest fan but the new blood in looks good. Chambers and Luongo look very confident on the ball, Tommy Smith looks to have improved and benefitted from his recent interantional experiences, JET looks as though he actually wants to contribute to defending as well as having silky feet, Carlos causes all sorts of porblems going forward. I know it was only BRovers the other night but to see Cressie getting into the box in the dying minutes to score shows the determination we need to see throughout the season. Felt sorry for Chops as nothing seemed to come off for him but unlike last year he didn't fade away in the second half - if he keeps that level up then goals will come.

Hope I'm as optomistic come 5pm Sasturday!!!

If this was December and we were languishing in the bottom three, I could understand some of the comments on here. But to write the season off before a ball in kicked in the League is beyond me.

I wonder if those same people moaned that we only got 29 Gold medals at the Olympics?

I for one will be hoping for a win against Blackburn Saturday, but I feel sorry for the moaners if we do, it'll ruin their season!

@J4ck44 - all PJ has to say is he is working on signings, putting himself in a corner saying he may well have someone in before Saturday puts himself in a no win situation, if he doesn't it infuriates us and makes it look like he can't attract players, why say that part of the quote, that's my opinion

I'm not a Jewell fan but he can't be blamed for the lack of progress on transfer targets. I like his more recent focus on youth and I'm delighted with the capture of Chambers. Admitting defeat on Bullard is another positive so I'm more feeling much more positive than this time last year.

Makes me laugh that the same story in the star is worded so differently. Normal billboard build up I think.

Tiggs ..... you say take a leaf out of Lambert's book, do you know how many signings he has made? I will tell you, its 4. Jewell has signed 4(including kourama) massimo on loan makes 5, plus hopefully others to follow.

Do you really think jewell leaving on the eve of the new season would serve us well? .....let the new season start for ffs.....COYB

so despite saying that he wants players to be here for 3-4 years it looks like a loanee coming in? How else could Jewell tie up a deal for a purchase in 2 days!

Get behind the boys, roar them on..but Jewell can Pi$$ off! No faith in him, no tactical awareness, no idea about running a football team and has a reputation based on one lucky season with Bradford a few million years ago...new manager by November please...

I would be interested to know what arguments you would offer to support your view that PJ is 'doing a great job'. Normally football managers are judged on results; if this were the only criterion, PJ would struggle to justify such a rating in a performance appraisal. But football management is an extremely hard occupation and there are other criteria on which a manager must be judged:

1. He must produce an exciting style of football that is exhilarating to the core support and can attract additional customers into the stadium and keep them coming thereby helping the revenue streams;

2. He must be able to assess true potential in the football marketplace and be able to continually bring in new players to enhance the quality of the squad both from the point of the team selected to play and also to sell on to generate additional revenue;

3. He must be able to continually integrate youth talent developed through the academy program into the senior squad;

4. Finally, and most importantly for most ITFC supporters, he must produce a team that on each match day 'earns' their wages by displaying a collective commitment to the shirt even when results go against them.

Whether or not PJ is doing a 'great job' measured against these criteria is distinctly arguable. Only the CEO who has set the performance targets is in the position to judge objectively. I am not anti PJ and even if I were, this is not the time to conduct an objective assessment of results. The new season will very quickly tell us if PJ has any chance of a new contract at the end of it. I wish him well, but as for him doing ' a great job', well I yet need to be convinced.

Nitroblue...you forgot the luck he had with Wigan, once can be called lucky, but twice is not luck. The jury is out for me , but i want to see how the season goes b4 i get too excited either way.

Blue041273.... great post by the way, so many valid points.....Coyb

What a bunch of idiots you lot are.

Blue041273 - you list the criteria that so many managers cannot conform to at all. They are all valid points but so few managers bring quality through. If we go to Man Utd - when was the last home grown youth player bought through - I think there has been one possibly two in the last eight seasons - and both of these players are not regular starters (to date).

Tiggs - that's right lets get rid of the manager two days before the start of the season. great move. You have chairman potential - any relation to Deadly Doug.

Jewell is not the best of managers but he is certainly not the worst. Let's stick with him and see how the first ten matches go - then judge.

I certainly expect us to be in the top ten this season - allthough i think we will struggle for the top seven.

Keep the faith. If you cannot keep the faith, post your idiot messages and keep us all amused. Oh and for the vast majority of "supporters" on here, keep playing the football manager games.!!

Thank you. I now what it is to get 'Dog's Abuse'.

In response I can only say that to compare the manager's job at Man U with ITFC is pointless. As it happens Man U have brought loads of youngsters through the ranks and given them first team exposure over the years. Of course most of them don't make the grade longterm there but given Man U's status in the game that's entirely understandable. Most do go on to make good careers in the game nevertheless.

I'm not saying PJ is a bad manager, I just remain to be convinced that so far he is doing anything other than an average job for ITFC.

Considering the state the lasat manager left the club in ( both player and finance wise ) PJ is getting us back on track . He is now working under a lot more difficult conditions due to the club getting into line with the FFP regs ( which a lot of our competitors are ignoring and going for promotion or bust this season ) making it more of a problem getting the players to realise that the days of mega wages and transfer fees are over ( well done Rangers and Pompey for going bust ! ) and wants now have to be relistic !!

In all seriousness it does seem a little bit like panic stations trying to get a number of players in at the last moment, I don't think we've had a lot of luck over the last few weeks with things going 'pear shaped' at the last moment. Let's hope we don't have any rash signings. Personally Ithink we need back up for Chopra/Scotland and a wide left midfield and back up for Chambers/Smith if Delaney goes.
