Jewell: A Rude Awakening
Saturday, 25th Aug 2012 18:11

Blues boss Paul Jewell says his side’s 6-0 defeat at Blackpool was a rude awakening after their good start to the Championship season. The Town manager didn’t think anyone could have foreseen the eventual result during the first half.

Jewell said: “I don’t think that in the first 44 minutes you could see that coming. I thought we had as much of the ball as them. But we didn’t do an awful lot with it and we gifted them goals.

“The second goal came at a crucial time, right on half-time, and it meant it was going to be an uphill task in the second half. But once the third goal went in, we capitulated, I have to say.

“I think it’s a rude awakening,” he added. “I think the spirit in the squad is good, there’s no doubt about that, but that’s a test what happens out there.

“We played exceptionally well on Tuesday, battled away against Blackburn and in a week we’ve gone from the sublime to the ridiculous. That’s been our Achilles’ heel for a long time. On our day we’re good but when we’re not on our day...

“I wouldn’t say that it was one-way traffic in the first half today, we were definitely in the game but we didn’t do enough in their box and when it came in our box we just gave silly goals away.”

The Blues boss thought his side were particularly susceptible on the break: “They counter-attacked us all the time. It wasn’t as if they had bouts of pressure and were banging on the door and banging on the door.

“The sixth goal was a classic. We’re 5-0 down a we’ve got four players out the game with a minute to go. We lose it and they’re back at us.

“Counter-attacking’s hurt us badly today and when we’ve had the ball in situations, we haven’t done enough with it, and when the ball’s been turned over we’ve been exposed.”

Jewell had praise for the opposition: “They’re a good team. You can’t give teams like this goals like we did and expect to win matches.

“They’ve got a lot of flair players in their team, who work exceptionally hard and they’re a good team. But to lose 6-0 feels horrible.”

Blackpool manager Ian Holloway thought the result flattered his side: “This time of year you get the odd freak result, and I think that was one, to be perfectly blunt.

“I think to go in at half-time the reflection of the game was wrong. I didn’t think we deserved to have a two-goal lead. Our goalie made a brilliant save.

“I thought they got out too easy, I thought they passed it, they looked dangerous and it flattered us at half-time, to be perfectly honest.

“I went mad at half-time, I didn’t think we understood how to win the ball back, they had too much time on it. They caused my back four too many problems because the midfield didn’t get it right.

“In the second half I was delighted. I thought we were much better. And we needed to be. Goals change games, that’s what I keep talking about, and so far we’ve managed to get them a the right times, at vital times, in the early games.”

Simple thing is that we NEED another CB. We shouldn't be conceding 6 at anytime of the season but each season we leak goals far too often. To be honest i'd rather Edwards played a Right wing when Hewitt is back from his injury so he can go Right back because JET is having some bad games.

Hopefully this is just a blip...onwards and upwards...

Wouldn't it be nice if for once, just once, we all looked on this defeat with a little perspective.

Accepted it was a bad day for all concerned, hope that the team and coaches learn from the mistakes and wish for a strong bounce back against Carlisle and Huddersfield.

I shall now surrender the floor to the Jewell Out brigade and conspiracy theorists convinced that Marcus Evans is going to turn PR into a Dr Evil style lair...

A couple of teams lost by similar margins on the opening day of the season - and no-one was suggesting that their season was over...
Holloway points out that there are always a few results like this at the start of the season (usually us!)
Always hideous to lose by a big margin but not the end of the world.
Interesting to hear Alex Mathie on Radio Suffolk speculating that transfer money is being with-held until Jewell is a couple of months into the season, to see how things go. Would explain our dismal record in landing anyone significant over the summer but it's a bit Catch 22 isn't it?

Ian Holloway going mad at his team when they are 2-0 up, can't wait for they day when we have a team when we can have that reaction.

Folks listen to what Ian Holloway said, this was a freak result and we competed well in the first half, we're an unfinished item as a team that's for sure but calm down everyone. Yes there needs to be a few more new faces but one result doesn't make or break a season. The fans have been brilliant thus far this season, lets keep behind the lads and forget this one, after all we are supposed to be supporters, but I'm sure the 'Jewell out' moaners will have their first outing of the today...sad muppets!!!

when you let in 6 goals there is more than a defensive problem with the defenders. If the midfield held onto the ball like they did in the 1st two games we wouldn't have a problem. You defend as a team in the modern game.

I hope we have learnt to buy in players and keep away from loan players, every time we get in loan players the team spirit seems to go and we look like what we effectively are, a team of mercenaries who play for themselves and not the team.
We need hungry players in the right positions with the right attributes, this costs good money, lets see how serious Marcus Evans is that he has faith in Paul and still wants promotion. Deadline day on Friday will tell us fans all we need to know.

Terrible result but lets have a reality check before we all go and say how bad we are. We put in a spirited display against a good Blackburn team and got a good victory at Watford who are 2 up against Birmingham at the moment. Blackpool have started great and wont lose many home or away this season. We got a drubbing, ok, but that doesn't mean we have a rubbish defence, that doesn't mean we cant pass the ball, it doesn't mean we cant win away, because we showed all those three things against Watford. The Championship is an unpredictable league but Blackpool are a force and so we have to be balanced and take the rough with the smooth a little. we had elation Tues night, deflation today, but we have four points from three games and have to keep in mind the good things we've done so far as well as the negative of today, these aren't excuses, it was a bad day at the office but we have to see things as a whole.

Having been going to PR since before the FA Cup win in 78 its really disappointing how low the ambitions of many of our current fans. Some applaud every signing and every defeat and I'm amazed that we can't come on here and express a different view without being called idiots, muppetts etc.

to be honest were miles behind a team llike blackpool at the monent.. people are calling for a cb and a forword but we never play 2 up front i think playing 1 up we dont get enough goals please play 442 its the only way to play in this league we clearly dont have enough people in the box.

Its a freak result & hopefully the lads will turn it into something positive. It maybe just the result that's needed to shake them up instead of being complacent. We seemed to be ok in the first half but not clinical enough from the reports.
