Jewell: We're Not Tough Enough
Tuesday, 28th Aug 2012 23:10

Town manager Paul Jewell bemoaned his side’s inability to see out tough periods in games after their 2-1 extra-time Capital One Cup defeat at Carlisle.

Jewell said: “It was hugely disappointing. We controlled the game in the first half. The chances we’ve missed, we should have put the game behind us.

“We’re not a team that can see out tough periods in games. One long ball over the top, a cross comes in and it’s a goal.

“We didn’t pass the ball well enough in the second half and it showed our frailties. We need some power and we need a bit of bite in the team.

“You start to think you’re making progress and when we get it down and pass it we’re nice. But when it becomes a little bit physical, a little bit not as pretty as it should be, we haven’t got enough people in the group who can see those out.”

He felt his team ought to have had the game won before the break: “In the first half we were in control of the game, Chops has had a one-v-one, Josh has had a one-v-one. Goals change games.

“We’re not ruthless enough all over the pitch. It’s all right people talking about passing the ball and pretty football, that’s OK, but you’ve got to earn that right and too many of us don’t [earn that right].

“Some of them think they’ve arrived, some of them think they’re good players because people have been saying nice things about them. The last two results should be a wake-up call to them.

“This is a fantastic football club but we have to do the things that good teams do, which is scrap and fight and see ourselves through tough times, not just in seasons, in games.”

As at Blackpool, he thought his side only played sporadically during the game: “We’re playing games for periods and patches. A bit like on Saturday. For the first half hour there was nothing in the game, then we gave a goal away.

“The second goal [tonight], I don’t know what’s going through Cressy’s mind. Again, I don’t think Scott Loach has had any real saves to make, but we look vulnerable when we come under pressure.”

On top of the result, there was more bad news with three members of his currently small squad having injuries: “Luke Hyam has a hamstring and Carlos hurt his groin early on. Josh Carson got a little bit of a tight hamstring. With the long journey we’ve got, it’s not ideal to have extra-time.

“We’re stretched right to the limit. Luke felt his hamstring late on against Blackpool and he hasn’t trained since then.”

Surprised that nobody has commented on disgusting post from Nelson Tractor or that Phil even allowed it.Why he has to speak about the Chair of Supporters Club in such a manner is beyond me and has nothing to do with Jewells comments.
Feel that Manager has been let down by Evans and co recently;but really no progress whatsoever appears to have been made by PJ and surely he cannot expect to be given much more time as most Managers who have conceded 3 goals and more in the time he has been here would have been out on their ear already.I cannot remember as many thrashings under any other Manager.Hollywoodginge please note.
Will be missing 5th home game in 50 years on Saturday;but cant say am too bothered as dont feel optimistic anymore about Towns prospects.
Pre match drink and chat with mates in Legends usually highlight of Saturday afternoons now.

You've just got to look at the other results from the cup across the country to see that our game wasn't an anomaly. Let's pass Huddersfield off the park COYB!

I also just wish to add that so far nobody has done the correct and respectful thing so let me be the first, well done Carlisle! Full respect and credit where it's due, a deserved victory and good luck in the competition and for the season ahead.

Moan Moan Moan!! Jeeeez!

If I asked any of you if you would take 4 points from our first 3 (very tough!) games you would have taken it! So what we're out of the cup? It's a blessing!

We're a young team! We're progressing! I wish our 'supporters' would finally get behind the club! It was never like this before Royle left! Ever! I blame the Internet personally.. Everyone becomes a perfect pundit and manager behind a keyboard. Pathetic! 3 games in and you're calling for PJ's head!
I sit lower north stand.. If we're drawing or losing on Saturday v Huddersfield.. And if I hear even 1 person boo at half time or full time I'll knock your bloody head off!

Get a grip fellow 'supporters'!! Either turn up at PR and support, cheer, get behind the team and be a 12th man win lose or draw..

Or stay away. Simple.

hollywoodginge, you're my type of supporter your original comments were spot on. I have thought this season of stopping using this site as the negativity on here drives me insane. I have been a Town fan since my first game in 1967, so have seen some ups and downs. It's very early on in the season and some signs have been very promising indeed. Rome wasn't built in a day and although I'm still not 100% sure if Jewell is the man to take us to the Premiership, I'm damn sure Harry Rednapp isn't sat at home waiting for us to call (some of you really need to grow up!!)

Tonight was one of four games this season, 2 have been good and two not so....that's 4 games and we are out of a 'nothing' cup but have some bright young players with the prospect of 3 more coming in by Friday.

So to the Jewell out brigade, you are entitled to your views, but did sacking Magilton or Keane turn things around? So PLEASE stop your whinging and lets all try to give the team back the confidence it's so clearly lacking. I still think we'll do ok this season, but then maybe I'm just deluded!!!

Blackpool lost 1-2 at home to Morecambe in the first round. Were their supporters shouting for Holloway's head? I think not.

We are all disappointed with the last two results but the game at Watford showed this is not a bad team. With re-inforcements joining this week giving a stronger all round squad in another 3-4 games losing a cup game will soon be forgotten.

Want the best for our team.

Gutted by the results from tonight and saturday, but as many posters have already said its early days and we havent had a terrible start to the season, i for one was impressed with the results vs watford and blackburn.

Really excited by the prospect of seeing boyd in a town shirt, he has always impressed me whenever ive seen peterborough play, and taylor could be an important player for us too, he scored some absolute screamers last season.

The negativity of some posters is ridiculous, calling for jewell's head after three league games (even if we'd lost them all) is ludicrous, we have a young team who will grow and improve, so stop being so negative and get behind your team!

Listened to the match on the Internet and the real stars last night were the away fans. If we can't get a reputation on the pitch, maybe we can get one off it for having a core of really dedicated supporters. The less said about the debacle in which a League 1 side outplayed us (mostly), the better, but I still do have some sympathy for Jewell. He is obviously operating in the toughest of markets with limited resources. For example, Simon Cox would have been great, but would he have bent his demands to our wage structure? I doubt it. While I am a bit uncertain whether our training methods and tactics have kept pace with the modern game, I do, as I said, also feel sorry for Jewell. We may still pull it round. Suppose we get N'Gaw in midfield and he's a success and adds the steel Jewell wants, and suppose we get the two Peterboro' boys - then that should keep us away from relegation. I doubt it will turn us into play-off challengers though. For that we need two or three real quality players on top of those already mentioned - and that, my friends, ain't going to happen. So keep up the support, guys. We're going to need it! COYB!

Why is it Jewells fault? That side last night was close to be the best one he can put out and on paper good enough to beat Carlisle. Again Cresswell gifted a side a goal. Will people stop banging on how good he is and we cant afford to lose him.

Same with 'Chops'. All mouth and no action. The club spent a lot of money sending him on a jolly to California and we have had nothing in return yet. A player of his experience should be putting one on ones away

Lets hope he signs Boyd, Taylor and Murphy. At least there will be FOUR new faces in the side against Huddersfield on Saturday and how about Delaney partnering Chambers?

@floridaboy i completely agree about those 2 players but PJ signed them & continues play them & praise them up. Along with JET.
@hollywoodginge i never wanted super Jim to leave, always wanted Keane to succeed but Jewell has had 20 months & still were hampered by the same problems. Problems that need to be addressed on the training pitch not in the transfer market!

Professional football management must be a tough job (managing a kids football team is hard enough) and I am sure running a club is challenging too what with FFP, player salaries and contracts etc. And of course then there's the 20 thousand or so supporters all with their own requirements to satisfy. But at the end of the day those in charge are responsible for getting things right and on that basis we are failing. Clegg has made numerous bad moves and realistically is a failure as a CX in the light of these. Other than replacing Magic with Keane, his worst move was to employ Jewell who despite doing ok with spending club Wigan (last day escape from relegation) left burnt out and has looked the same ever since. PJ seems a nice guy but just not what a club like us needs if indeed we are 'building for the future'. Yes, as predicted by some clearly the poor bloke has had poor support from SC and ME this summer but we still have a porous defence with no sign of improvement here, play 1 up front, get beaten by poor teams (thats now 3 defeats to lower league in last 6 games) and frankly he seems down in the dumps and put of his depth! IMO Evans needs to think again or in my opinion we will just waste another season. Just my view as a lifelong fan though I am sure others differ.

This is even more humiliating than the Blackpool result and Jewell is too blame. Clegg too soft to do anything about it so we're stuck with groundhog day.

Interesting opinion WorcesterBlue.

N'Daw & Murphs will give much more physicality in the team. Look forward to seeing them in action in the near future.
The injuries to Hyam, Carlos & Carson just show what a light squad we really have, hopefully this will help PJs hand in trying to get Taylor and Boyd.

TBH its no harm for us to be out of League Cup with the squad we have. All efforts can now go on performing well in the league. The last time we went on a cup run we were almost relegated!

I.m sat here wondering if those that post their vitriolic rants after a poor game, ever re-read their posts the morning after and think they have made themselves look a total tit?
Just asking?

Enough's enough, 18 months on and we are no further forward than when Keane was in charge. In fact I'd go so far as to say that I would doubt that a Keane team would have been beaten 6-0 and 7-1. Don't get me wrong, when Keane was sacked it was a late birthday present for me and I was pleased with the appointment of Jewell in the beginning, he's a likeable character who said all the right things but now it has become all too familiar of his stint at Derby. 7 out of the starting 11 are his signings, players who he and his staff coach every day yet we hear that there is no toughness in the side, no fight, who is to blame then? Imagine if you were one of his signings playing last night and heard your manager say that? Does a lot for morale and togetherness doesn't it!

The Posh bids smack of desperation to me and I'd be surprised if they thought a move to ITFC will progress their footballing careers. If after 18 months things are no better why are some on here still of the opinion that the next 18 months will be any different? I'm all for supporting our club but let's not be delusional, we all want the best for our club but I can't see we will ever get promoted with this manager and his backroom staff.

Clegg has to take his share of responsibility too, the saga over Charlie Austin, Stephen Davies, Joel Ward and Jason Pearce etc etc. is a complete joke, if you really want a player, do your homework and get him, don't mess players and clubs around otherwise we will get a bad reputation.

That's it, rant over. COYB

From the manager right through to the team we are simpley not good enough at the moment. Last night was shambles. No reaction from the players, we have a few players who are well below par ie Jet and chops to name just two of them. Paul patience this season will not be on your side and we must beat Huddersfield. And the games get easier after that ad well boro away then wolves at home. Lose all 3 you probably won't have a job. Sign Taylor and Boyd, and beat Huddersfield.
