Jewell: We're Not Tough Enough
Tuesday, 28th Aug 2012 23:10

Town manager Paul Jewell bemoaned his side’s inability to see out tough periods in games after their 2-1 extra-time Capital One Cup defeat at Carlisle.

Jewell said: “It was hugely disappointing. We controlled the game in the first half. The chances we’ve missed, we should have put the game behind us.

“We’re not a team that can see out tough periods in games. One long ball over the top, a cross comes in and it’s a goal.

“We didn’t pass the ball well enough in the second half and it showed our frailties. We need some power and we need a bit of bite in the team.

“You start to think you’re making progress and when we get it down and pass it we’re nice. But when it becomes a little bit physical, a little bit not as pretty as it should be, we haven’t got enough people in the group who can see those out.”

He felt his team ought to have had the game won before the break: “In the first half we were in control of the game, Chops has had a one-v-one, Josh has had a one-v-one. Goals change games.

“We’re not ruthless enough all over the pitch. It’s all right people talking about passing the ball and pretty football, that’s OK, but you’ve got to earn that right and too many of us don’t [earn that right].

“Some of them think they’ve arrived, some of them think they’re good players because people have been saying nice things about them. The last two results should be a wake-up call to them.

“This is a fantastic football club but we have to do the things that good teams do, which is scrap and fight and see ourselves through tough times, not just in seasons, in games.”

As at Blackpool, he thought his side only played sporadically during the game: “We’re playing games for periods and patches. A bit like on Saturday. For the first half hour there was nothing in the game, then we gave a goal away.

“The second goal [tonight], I don’t know what’s going through Cressy’s mind. Again, I don’t think Scott Loach has had any real saves to make, but we look vulnerable when we come under pressure.”

On top of the result, there was more bad news with three members of his currently small squad having injuries: “Luke Hyam has a hamstring and Carlos hurt his groin early on. Josh Carson got a little bit of a tight hamstring. With the long journey we’ve got, it’s not ideal to have extra-time.

“We’re stretched right to the limit. Luke felt his hamstring late on against Blackpool and he hasn’t trained since then.”

I hope I don't come across some of you lot at PR on Saturday....that would be a dampener. We've just had bids accepted for Boyd and Taylor. The man's doing his best with the resources at his disposal, and Town have been playing some good football with little time to rest recently. He's admitted ruthlessness is important, hence we've got N'Daw to bring some bulk to midfield/defence. The young players in Hyam and Luongo have shown they're up for the challenge, let's not forget it's only been 3 league games. Bugger the Cup to be honest, no one really gives a damn about it in the long run. It's out the way now. We've got Huddersfield this weekend who like to pass the ball. That will make for an interesting match and hopefully we can see Town do what they do best without being bombarded with boring hoofing. Judge our progress at Christmas, not 3 games in. I've still got a good feeling about it this season. Still buzzing off our win at Watford to be honest, never seen such a passionate response to a goal! Ok we weren't tough enough against Blackpool or tonight, but we showed so much character against Blackburn and Watford. Leicester have has a shocker of a start and they're up there with the faves to be promoted! Get behind Town and be patient.

This was always a banana skin game but after Blackpool you would have thought that everybody would have been up for it. There's no point repeating ad nauseum that we're not tough enough as a team; that's why we have a manager with a vast array of coaching staff, to identify problems and sort them out. On its own losing this game is not necessarily a problem but coming after the capitulation on Saturday it's looking difficult if not impossible for PJ to turn this round now.

Bla bla bla, the same twaddle spouted after every game we loose which is far too many. When did we have someone in the team deemed a very good prospect? Maybe wickham however his @rse is now full of splinters up north !!!

Thought it was a good idea to play our strongest team after what happened last season! Are we really that bad, that we can't beat Carlisle?

Dreadful result. Pathetic. he is responsible for picking the players to include in the squad. He is responsible for instilling the requirments in the player. Will admit I'm not particularily interested in promotion. I just want us to finish in the top half!!!!

(Apologies in advance for the large comment). I think it's a combination of things, personel and formation, attitude, lack of leadership, inexperience and probably the manager too. I still think PJ should be given a chance because we were never going to win the League Cup and we're 3 games into our league season. I personally think JET and Chopra in particular need to fine tune their attitudes. I think Chops thinks he will automatically bag 20 odd goals and all he has to do is turn up for games because he gets picked all the time, I know he scoed at Watford and thrives on decent service but he needs to prepare for games and understand that he has to really work for goals . JET as well just seems to laid back as if football isn't a big deal to him, I know its his style but surely he wants to develop his all round game. We all know he can improve on but he just seems to become a bit self indulgent and loses focus as soon as the chips are down, though I do understand he's still a young man and so I cant be overly critical. I might be sounding harsh but I would imagine many Town fans spent hard earnt money on a long Tuesday night trip and have no reward but what will happen, a few lads will apologise half heartedly on twitter to our loyal blue blooded fans. The players we have have genuine quality but they can't just keep turning up for games expecting their class to shine through , you 'get back what you put in' and all that. They should be taking pride in their profession and relish each game. Scowcroft, Holland, Naylor, these lads gave everything. As for PJ I will keep the faith in him but he's becoming a soft touch. He needs to tear into a few of our lads, be ruthless. Di Canio is a great example of what he should be like, gets the best from his players every game and will be assertive if one of his players is not trying his best e.g last seasons skipper Paul Caddis, and their club are reeping the rewards largely due to Di Canio's character. Everyone has too give more because the fans are the ones suffering, the players will still get their 10k a week, win lose or draw.

Dear Jewell out brigade,

It's nice to see that you all stuck to your guns through the 2 name changes, the Jim out brigade and the Keane out brigade, you have twice been rewarded what you so wished for and in both instances look what you got! Does this not show a degree of sacking managers doesn't work?

Like or dislike this post, I don't really care. But to start calling for the managers head is disgraceful, in my opinion we have gone from having the best supporters in the land who would not turn on their own team until a decade ago, to the most fickle over reacting bunch of moaners who expect immediate success, yes I pitty those die hards that travelled miles and were not rewarded accordingly, yes it hurts to lose matches in the manner we have but that's football!

Stop over reacting to every loss, or win, accept that we will have good and bad patches, accept that we are in a building process and success will not happen over night.

I'm sick to death of this damned if they do, damned if they don't culture!!

Look at Portsmouth, Glasgow Rangers and clubs in similar predicament and think yourselves very very lucky, look at the SUPPORTERS of those clubs and how they have stuck with there teams, players and managers! Now look at yourselves! Embarrassed? You should be!

Those fans would not put up with anyone saying a bad word against their clubs, especially from their own.

Apologies to those who do continue to support my beloved blues positively through thick and thin as I do.

Rant over

@hollywoodginge... Well said. I'm excited to see this team progress. Loving Hyam and Luongo in the centre. Boyd and Taylor to come in. This is the most optimistic I've felt about Town in a long time. 'Jewell Out' brigade - you're not invited to the playoff party.

Perhaps you PJ and your coaching staff are not good enough? McGilton and Keane were Irish disasters leaving you with tatters. Your toying with has beens failed, your toying with youth should be left to the master....Brian Klug?

Roll on 12 months and it is deja vu. Poor league result, knocked out of the cup and desperate to sign someone, niegh anyone that will come to PR. Gutted and so depressed at the mo, just can't see a light in this gloom that is ITFC.

Have taken some knocks in 35 years as a town fan but really believe that we are heading down the Coventry route at present.

I am a reasoned fan and believe that we can't expect promotion but I do expect progress and improvement- also passion and pride, which is lacking in abundance. Suspect that I am not in the minority.

I live in Portsmouth and yes the supporters are passionate however we are not in the same situation as they are or ever was. They have a Sh1tty ground and no training facilities yet they pay cr@p players £36 k a week. Mind you right now I'd take Michael Appleton any day. And yes I will be making the long trip to FPR on Saturday with my son, and yes it will probably be the last time this season if we keep playing the same sh1te. Fair play to the supporters who went up to watch that tonight!

Bennyitfc despite pessimistic post earlier wich was more of an observation, I agree with you copletely but you know as well as I and everyone else on here that Marcus Evans will not give Jewell until christmas in fact I would say that if we lose to Huddersfield after the window closes Paul Jewell will be looking for a new job. Also are we all 100% on the bids for Taylor and Boyd being accepted if so could some one point me to a link to the story.

@Ipswich61 @tractamatt... News of the bids has been all over this site today, and Stuart Watson (ITFC writer) would have has sources who spoke to Jewell after the game tonight. Quote: "Jewell admits that a bid for Boyd and Taylor has been accepted". Don't think he'd be lying...

100% accepted, sadly a new striker with similar traits to what we already have and target man on the wing will not solve the lack of structure to our game. We need to play with purpose, surely all this is thought of before the game starts, I know it was under Burley with his triangles, people knew the options of when and where they were meant to be moving and passing to. At the moment we seem to be passing like a manic pinball machine, I don't have a clue what tactics n stratergys we use, it doesnt look like there is any, apart from Zonal marking at set plays that is stupid with a vertically challenged side.

Love to see Paul turn it around but I cant see it happening :-(

Many thanks ipswich61/Bennyitfc just read it and now despite tonight I'm buzzing if we agree terms and land them both plus Murphy it will add the bite and be the kick in the backside certain other players need as they will no longer be automaticaly on the team sheet they will have serious competition for their places and although they wont play against Huddersfield,it might be a bit early, I predict a huge turn around in fourtune September, October, November. Like most I am not happy tonight...but this time last week I was very happy indeed. We have three of our next four games at home and it sounds like we have some good new blood coming in. We need to get over this northwestern disaster and get behind the team again.
Easy for me to say I know but I did listen to the entire game which is not even close to making the effort and trip that some of our supporters did. Well done to them!

Hollywoodginge:
I very much agree with that comment, you have to take the rough with the smooth at times. We're not on the verge of extinction and we have a club in a relativily good financial state which musn't be taken for granted. But also for this very reason we have to be balanced as well. we should be taking advantage of this fact not use it as a way to show an acceptance that we're a nice mediocre Championship club. We should be using this stability as a platform, we can spend a couple of million on players and give them there salaries, it's how this money is spent that can be the key. We can with good work inside our club challenge at the top end of the table. Yes we cant expect miracles over night but the foundations at our club are in place for us to be a successfull football club if the owners, management team and players go about their jobs impressively, making key desicions and putting everything into the club. Dare I say this is how Naaridge have been successfull the last couple of years, it's how you feed of the clubs stability and use it as a platform to take the club forward. Ah another long winded comment again, my apologies.
