Stevenson Set for Return to Scotland
Wednesday, 29th Aug 2012 14:28

Blues midfielder Ryan Stevenson is closing in on a move back to the SPL with Motherwell. We understand that the ex-Ayr United and St Johnstone man is currently in talks with the Fir Park club regarding a permanent deal.

The 28-year-old joined Town from Hearts for £50,000 in January but is yet to establish himself in the Blues first team.

Stevenson has made three starts and 10 substitute appearances for Town, scoring his only goal in the 3-2 win at Doncaster on the final day of last season. The Scot is contracted to the Blues until the end of the season.

The one-time Scotland call-up is understood to want to move on in order to play regular football.

Posh pair George Boyd and Paul Taylor are understood to currently be at Portman Road for talks regarding their £2 million switch to the Blues.

I can't understand our fans, really can't. He was worth a shot at £50k and has showed glimpses of being a half decent player but over all I don't think he has the ability or the fitness for The Championship. If we'd payed £500k for him then it may well be a different matter. I think with the players we've got in midfield, hopefully Boyd coming in too he'll be so far down the pecking order it's best for him to find another club, if he leaves then I will wish him well, thanks for the effort Ryan and good luck.

Not a waste of a signing we will probably make money on him better to sell im now and make a profit than to wait until the end of the season and make nothing

Though he may be going to Motherwell, are Ipswich going to make any sort of profit from his move or even get the £50,000 back we paid for him??

He'd moved down with his wife and kid. Apparently he wasn't happy at itfc, and he did say when he came, if he wasn't starting regularly he wouldn't stick around. True to his word - good for him. With two more midfield players about to come in, Jewell was obviously waiting until he could release him, which is pretty wise with such a small squad. Good club management all round - for once, well done Clegg and Jewell.

I remember that during the January transfer window Jewell said we needed 4/5 in through the door and in the end I think Ryan was the only player he brought in. It appeared to be window dressing at the time and that now seems confirmed.

was never going to establish himsefl in the first team, however we only paid £50k for him so its not a massive loss

At the same time as saying we're short of bodies, we're letting potentially decent squad players like Stevenson and Peters on relatively low wages go for nothing while paying over the odds for the Peterborough pair. Doesn't make a lot of sense.

I think he is a good player from what we have seen of him. He scored a cracking goal and I think he could have improved more given moe matches, but with Boyd and Murphy (hopefully) coming in, I can see his chances remaining limited. I wish him all the best for the future, it's just a shame he couldn't have made more of an impact.

Bit disappointed with this. Jewell was moaning we have too many 'nice' footballers. I understand Boyd would probably go ahead of Stevenson in the pecking order but Stevenson is probably one of the few that can do the dirty work and grind out results. Don't think he's had a fair chance so I can understand if he wants to move away.

we really are a joke under this regime!
signing a player and then getting rid within months!
probably taking a player (an average player) on loan for a third time.
we really are big soggy pants!!!
JEWELL OUT!!

...... another sign of Jewell making 'well judged' signings - you couldn't make the last 2+ years up if you tried at this Club - downhill all the way since Magilton left. And it wasn't that great then - but now ? - it beggars belief.

Jewell couldn't spot a player if he stood on him - other than by accident !

Another in the line of ludicrous decisions by the said man.

Jewell - continuously thrashing around like a non-swimmer without a bouyancy aid. How else can anyone describe his tenure to date ? - honestly.

??..one minute PJ's saying that the squad isn't big enough, the next minute we're offloading??

Fine,so long as Boyd & Taylor are on board.

All the best Ryan, to be honest I don't think he was ever good enough or bad enough :) to make it into our starting 11 in the first place.

This seems a bit of a shame to me. Stevenson hasn't really been given any kind of run in the team since he joined. Ok, he had fitness issues when we signed him, but I can't help feeling it's premature to move him on already.

If it's simply because he's not good enough then fair play. I spoke to a Hearts supporting friend of mine when we were linked with Stevenson and he said he was a tidy, hard-working player and a good buy for only £50k. I guess it can be hard to judge a player's ability in the SPL compared to English football.

All the best anyway.

Good luck Ryan, shame you never really got a run in our struggling team to try to show your worth!

are we selling or giving away like the rest of the squad?

Shame it didnt work out but no real loss, not like we spent millions to bring him here. Good luck to him, we've still got Drury, Lawrence, Martin, JET, Carson, Hyam, New Senegalese chap, Luongo - that's 8 players and not to even mention Boyd. Midfield isn't where we're short. Oh and poor tattoos.

Stevenson out - Boyd, Taylor, Murphy and someone to replace the liability Tommy Smith in. Done.

Shame we didn't see the best of him. Maybe it will fall through, he'll get a chance here and show his true potential - as happened with Drury. If PJ is bringing players in, he needs to make the right decisions. Ok, it won't always work out, but there are many of his players he brought in that have now gone - Bullard, Bowyer, etc, with Ellington told he can go and now Stevenson. He tried and failed to sell Drury to Crawley. Why scout and bring in players only to get rid? Poor decision making or panic buys?

He was offered a short-term contract and he needed to get away from Hearts so it suited all parties. In different circumstances, an SPL side would have paid more for him. So what's the problem?

Well, actually, I thought Paul Taylor would be a good replacement for him. Hard working deep lying striker who can score goals. So I wasn't too worried. But now it looks like that deal has fallen through (unless Peterboro are messing with us) then I worry we're pack to panic loans as permanent transfers become impossible in the time left.

Hearts fans are looking forward to giving him a warm welcome back when he returns with Motherwell.
