Rangers Defender Linked
Thursday, 30th Aug 2012 09:41

Town are in talks with ex-Rangers central defender Kirk Broadfoot, according to one of this morning’s tabloids. The 28-year-old’s Ibrox contract was cancelled yesterday.

Broadfoot, who is 6ft 3in tall, was a youth player at Hibernian but started his senior career with St Mirren where he made more than 150 appearances in five years before moving on to Rangers on a Bosman free transfer in the summer of 2007.

Capped four times at full level by Scotland, scoring once, in addition to appearances at U21 and B levels, Irvine-born Broadfoot made 106 starts and 12 sub appearances for Rangers, scoring once during his five years with the Glasgow club.

While mainly playing at centre-half, Broadfoot, who won three Scottish titles and a League Cup while at Ibrox, has also operated at full-back.

Announcing Broadfoot’s departure yesterday, Rangers manager Ally McCoist said: "We would just like to take the opportunity to thank him very much for his services.

"Kirk has agreed with [chief executive] Charles [Green] and the club that his contract will be made null and void and he will be free to leave the club from today or tomorrow."

Another central defender is very much on Paul Jewell’s wish list ahead of Friday’s 11pm deadline.

If its anything like the Peterborough duo deal all will be basically agreed and Clegg will stick his nose in. Heard a rumour that salary was agreed with Boyd and Taylor and then Clegg stepped in and offered the 2K less than original.

tall, average scottish player. Can imagine as he's been at rangers his wage demands might be silly. Would provide cover in 2 positions we need to strengthen though.

I don't know why we aren't looking lower league / foreign leagues where we would be more likely to pick up a top performer at affordable wages

We will see

To safe both parties a lot of time can't his agent text Clegg and say how much his client wants per week. If its too much then don't bother coming down.

C'mon now....let's not buy rubbish in a mad panic. Too many dumb decisions get made this way. If there is no value in the market this window, then develop the young side with what we have and be patient for the next opportunity. Let's make sure we only buy the quality we want.
