Delaney in Exit Talks
Thursday, 30th Aug 2012 14:23

TWTD understands that Damien Delaney’s Blues career is set to come to an end before the transfer window closes on Friday evening with the central defender and the club in talks regarding the settlement of his contract.

The 31-year-old has another year left on his contract but would almost certainly be on the periphery at Town if he remained at Portman Road during the season ahead.

Instead, Delaney, signed by Roy Keane from QPR for an initial £750,000 in the summer of 2009, is keen to move on to play regular football elsewhere. Settling his contract before Friday’s deadline would allow him to move as a free agent once the window closes if he doesn't find a new side before then.

The former Cork City, Leicester and Hull man was linked with Crystal Palace and Nottingham Forest earlier in the summer.

Delaney’s probable exit means that Paul Jewell is likely to be on the look-out for two centre-halves either before the closure of the window on Thursday or on an emergency loan once Football League clubs are allowed to bring players in on that basis in a week’s time.

Rangers defender Kirk Broadfoot was reported to be in talks with the Blues earlier today.

Clegg will be very busy

It seems to me that we take for ever to do a deal so Mr Clegg has 36 hours to sign the Posh pair, Murphy and 2 centre back, if not the Posh pair then at least a striker so he has to sign 4 to 5 players,

Really cant see it so it looks like loan jobs

We really have got to be the worst football club at both buying and selling players! Why get a fee for a player when you can pay them to go, unreal! Just when you thought it couldn't get any worse

This is the one position i would be happy for us to sign an older player. We could really do with a Tony Mowbray type figure IMO.

Crikey, we're only 3 league games in to the season and things are'nt looking great. We need some positive news of a permanent signing, otherwise we'll have to play the youth team every week at this rate.

Astonishing....my club is going from bad to worse...great to be able to do the decent thing for players and allow them to move on but surely we should have ready made replacements ...we are heading the wrong way and it is just baffling me......our supporters club members and chairman need to be doing some serious questions and getting some assurances about where our club is heading.....am beginning to think ME and Clegg may well be naarich fans in disguise!!!!

very poor player no gr8 loss Div 1 standard at best. I think u all know what is going to happen,no signings before the deadline. however we are looking at getting loan players as soon as the window opens for loans. Sad state of affairs at my beloved town. please could we have a positive report. I'd rather have none at all than all this speculation regarding players it's just depressing!!

As many here are saying : how come we alone settle players' contracts whenever they want to leave (and when we want them to leave?) How about selling them? Or at worst making them available on a free? I assume that 'agents' would demand 100% settlement of their wages, so just send them on gardening leave until the contract ends.

HELLO....... Does anyone have any brain cells left at this club??? We have no defenders and can't sign anyone because we offer crap contracts.

This is crazy. If he wants to play regular football he needs knuckle down in training and displace Tommy Smith from the team. We're making it far too easy for players to walk out as and when it suits them.

Pleased to see the back of him tbh...the fewer memories of him and Smith at the back together the better in my opinion. I have a sneaky suspicion his exit could signal we are set to sign 1 or 2 CBs...and this time Jewell is (sensibly) keeping it private

As long as there is a replacement coming in then i have no problem with letting him leave. Poor distribution, positioning and decision making so well rid!

I do not see the logic in this unless the replacements are already signed. Jewell would be an idiot if he was releasing him on the strength that he had other "DONE DEALS!" in place.

That always works out well.

So glad he is clearing the Deadwood, but wish he had brought players in first!

Ive seen him have some xcellent games for the club and very much doubt our ability to bring in anybody better, certainly the 2guys currently operating at the back are no better.Always felt reassured by the xtra height he gave us and his throw the body on the line attitude.Ndaw can certainly play at c/half but im in the dark about him.All in all its a confusing period,i hate all the chopping and changing 3 weeks into the season and the feeling of starting anew.....again. 15th place will be some achievement this season.

I like many others are frustrated with the current state of the club (in many areas), but I also believe i am realistic. We are in a position that the money (limited in amounts) in the club is not that of many other championship clubs, they are either chasing the dream and/or heading for a big fall e.g. Portsmouth and us previously.

I suggest that we should all tell the board that we would be happier in league 1 or 2, but playing with our youth (Crewe springs to mind). I would want players, playing for the club in our passing and stylish winning way of football, rather than, players playing for just money and/or another move.

We are not in a position to challenge and the way the club is run we would just head straight back down as we do not have the money that is needed to survive in the prem or the players on mass coming through.

Sorry for my rant, I am on holiday and getting so frustrated with my glorious club.

Good news - neither him nor Smith are good enough as first choice left sided CBs. Get a new lefty in and have Smith as back up.
Plus a new right sided CB with chambers as cover.
Simple :-)

Ok will probably get slated for being too positive but... PJ is clearing out over paid players(Sadly the one whos name will not be mentioned agreed too high wages) I am guessing he has sat back this long hoping someone would come in and buy him as they haven't he is doing the best idea get rid and save 40 odd weeks of probably about 15k wages in a way that's a fee of 650,000 for him... One interesting point from this article of he is signed on at a club come 11pm Tomorrow he is a free agent and sign anytime surely this would be the same for Kourma as well..

And as usually happens at this time when a player looks likely to leave the club we claim that hes only good enough for the 1st division!!! My worry is that we hav half a dozen players still in the squad who are division 2 at best....Worried.
