Jewell Wants Loans Which Become Permanent Deals
Saturday, 1st Sep 2012 06:00

Blues boss Paul Jewell says loans with a view to permanent transfers will be what he is looking for when the ‘ emergency loan window’ opens in a week’s time. The Town manager says it was possible that a couple of players might have come in on Thursday had their current clubs been able to bring in new signings of their own.

Damien Delaney’s exit earlier in the week, ultimately to join Crystal Palace, means the Blues are particularly short on centre-halves, while the rest of the squad also needs further additions.

Jewell says he’ll be looking to bring players in prior to the match at Middlesbrough in a fortnight’s time with no game next Saturday as it's an international week: “A loan with a view to buying is what we’re looking for, that is the ideal scenario.

“There were a couple of players that we’re chasing that we could possibly have taken yesterday if these teams had got the player they were after.

“That situation could change where I take a player on loan and we put a figure on that and agree to buy him in January. That’s the ideal scenario we’re looking at.

“Loan players are fine,” he added. “But we want to build for the future. We want youngish players if possible, one or two experienced as well, but without sounding like a broken record, the window opens next week.

“I was speaking to five Premier League managers about players [on Thursday], not just about centre-halves, other types of players as well that might become available next week.”

Leicester’s Sean St Ledger, who was close to joining the Blues in January, was mentioned as a potential target yesterday, but the Town manager refused to be drawn on individual targets: “If I was here telling you about every conversation I’ve had on the phone this week, it would be a long old press conference.

“We’re looking to strengthen at centre-half, everybody knows that. Not just at centre-half, we’re looking to strengthen all around, whether that’s midfield or up front.”

Despite missing out a number of targets, Jewell is happy with the players he has brought in towards the end of the transfer window: “I’m pleased we’re bringing in Paul Taylor, Daryl Murphy and Guirane N’Daw. I’m pleased with those three, but I’m aware we need a couple of defenders, everybody knows that.

“I would tell people that it’s not a one-game season, we’ve got a game tomorrow, a big game against Huddersfield, and we’re prepared for that, but we know that we need to improve our squad for the coming months.”

Loans outside transfer windows are limited to a maximum of 93 days so players coming in prior to the Middlesbrough game would have to return to their clubs before Christmas and come back to Town in January if their moves were made permanent.

If we dont get a defender or two we are screwed. Smallest squad ever. We needed 5 players in we ended up with minus 1, having released peters, Bullard, Delaney, Stevenson, wright. There is something very strange happening at Portman road. Mind you, Elliot Hewitt will be fit soon, so that's right back and possible centre vac cover and apparently N'daw can also play CB. We've then got a hefty midfield bundle and now finally options on the wings, and also various quite exciting options up front. So really, things might not actually be that bad.

Big win for us today.

Short of CB's. Understatement of the century. Poor, poor managemnt at the very least to allow this to happen, and it's going to be loans again this season which PJ said he didn't want to do.

Same old mistakes and guff from Jewell. By the time he gets some players through the door we'll already be too far off the pace (just like last season).

Anyone else remember the quotes from the January transfer window ? Just before the window he said we needed at least 4 players in and I think all we did was bring in a £50k signing from Hearts nobody had ever heard of. I thought that Town might be holding on to their cash with a view to having a bigger war chest pre-season. It hasn't happened and I think we need a new owner and one who isn't looking to use our great club as a tax vehicle.

Did Kourouma's paperwork actually get sorted out before the end of the deadline??

Surely if you are going shopping with certain items that are a must have! ie, your boilers broke! you need a part to make it work! and you come home with a tin of paint, basicly this is what PJ has done, focused his energy in the wrong area, yes we have signings but not signed the most important ones, now that is poor housekeeping!

“I was even speaking to Premier League managers about players. OK, I was on the golf course but it still counts"

I will feel a lot more comfortable when we sign a CB or 2. But as for saying this is smallest squad ever, its not! its a small squad by todays standards admittedly. I can remember squads being so small that our bench consisted of the likes of Tommy Parkin ( Utility players) i can remember Micky stockwell playing as a striker because we had no fit strikers available, remembering him doing ok too, remember a time when he went in goal. I know its a more of a squad game now, look at the tiny squad we had in the glory years! ( late Seventies/early eighties) .With the addition on N"daw , murphy and Cheick we have lots of players available and options across the midfield.

I think Loans with a view to becoming permanent is good, try b4 you buy. also glad Delaney is gone, timing perhaps not the best but if he is not going to feature only fair we let him move on and get him off the wage
bill. i am certain we will see some quality in the building in the next week or so......COYB

so we get a loan centre back in and he plays poor they get dropped and back to square one. They play well and their team either want them back or another team who can offer better wages will snap them up.
when will we learn?

I like many, is losing patience with this Manager. I've said before you cannot build a team on loanees, and why is he only trying premier league clubs for their off casts. A good manager looks at all the leagues and often finds a little gem from there. PJ did it himself with Cressy, so why hasn't he done it this time? I think he may be covering for Evans & Clegg and the fact we have no money.

He is doing his best, we've managed too get two decent players in who will give us more attacking options and a greater goal threat which is an area we needed. At the moment our actual playing defence is ok its just the lack of depth, so hopefully we can get one or two in next week which would obviously benefit us. I'm not totally sure where PJ will play the new lads but i wanted a tough central midfielder (N'daw) a wide player (Murphy) and a striker (Taylor) so we've done alright, now just the defenders which PJ is clearly working on. In truth i'm glad Stevensson, Peters and Bullard and Delaney have left because in all honesty they were not really adding a great deal and that's a good £30k in wages which helps towards strengthening, wether that be loans or permanent signings, whatever helps us push higher up the league i dont really mind if they're loans, if we haven't got resources available at present then I'm sure permanent signings will be more frequent when we have more of a budget.

The "Emergency Loan" rules are even more stupid than the Transfer Window ones. Who makes this stuff up?
