Jewell: Better Side But Lacked Cutting Edge
Saturday, 15th Sep 2012 17:51

Blues boss Paul Jewell felt his team were the better side at the Riverside despite falling to a 2-0 defeat to Middlesbrough. Town created plenty of chances and the Liverpudlian was disappointed his team failed to take any of them.

Jewell said: “I thought we were the better team, I thought we played good football, we just lacked the cutting edge today inside the box. We’ve had lots of shots, played lots of quality football, had good possession, the only thing that was missing was goals.

“We created plenty of openings and we don’t make the most of them, real gilt-edged chances, through really good football.

“We had 17 shots on goal throughout the game, but we haven’t made their goalkeeper work hard enough, hence the reason we didn’t win the game.”

The Town manager was disappointed with Boro’s first goal which came after Andy Drury’s misplaced pass midway inside his own half: “It was a sloppy ball in midfield.

"The lad [Luke Williams] finished it really well, you can’t take the finish away from him. We had good possession in the middle of the park, we lost it and the next thing we’re a goal down.”

Jewell’s side pushed for the equaliser in the latter stages before being caught on the counter-attack for the Teessiders’ second goal but he thought his team deserved more for their performance: “The story of the second half is that we piled forward, they were trying to hit us on the break.

“We kept going, we tried to keep playing, but the ball didn’t drop for us in the box today. I’m not one to blame bad luck but the bounce of the ball just didn’t fall our way.

“We tried fresh legs late on and I thought the team, everyone who came on the pitch, played their part.

“OK, we’ve lost 2-0 and people will look at the result but you’ve got to look deeper than the result at this stage of the season.

“I thought some of our play was excellent and if we’d have come away with a point we would have been disappointed. To get nothing, we’re doubly disappointed.”

Jewell said he’d comment on whether he would be pursuing his interest in German trialist Kevin Pezzoni in the week.

Middlesbrough boss Tony Mowbray admitted his side had been given a difficult afternoon: “You have to say Ipswich played very well.

“Ipswich have got a history of being good with the ball, I was there for nine years and the coaching and the philosophy and the expectation at that club is that they take care of the ball, and I think they showed that today.

“They probably lacked a bit of a cutting edge. I thought Jonathan Woodgate and Andre Bikey and Jason Steele were very good today and yet, while Ipswich might be disappointed because they played well, we’ve won the game 2-0 and you can’t be dominant every game.

“There have been some occasions when we’ve lost and been dominant with the ball and I’m happy enough to take the points.”

When moaners are getting "thumbs up" on their comment, something is wrong in the Town fan camp.
COME ON TOWN! WE WILL BOUNCE BACK

Hoped for 1 point against Blackburn Rovers - we got 1 point.
Expected at least 1 point against Watford - we got 3 points.
Expected 0 points against Blackpool - we got 0 points.
Expected 3 points against Huddersfield - we got 1 point.
Expected 0 points against Middlesborough - we got 0 points.
At this stage hope & expectation = 5 points, reality = 5 points.
But Jewell makes me feel so dam miserable.
Love my team but he really winds me up.
Got to the point where I'd take Harry Redknapp's dog Rosie as his replacement.

Thing is even if we sack Jewell i seem to remember we wanted Gary Megson as first choice before Jewell so i'm still not going to get hopeful!!

In fact wait a couple more weeks and we can have Brendan Rodgers. Watching his team now and they can't score either.

We are sitting in the bottom three and have the worst goal difference having scored 4 and conceded 11. We should be doing better than this nevertheless I still feel that things will improve.
Meanwhile, there are some basics to be addressed e.g. why is there no real leadership on the pitch, why does Smith still let the ball bounce, why do we give the ball away as much as we do and why can't we do more with dead ball situations (we had 9 corners today with no end result)? Playing 422 resulted in more chances but as PJ stated we lacked any cutting edge with Martin and Chopra underwhelming.

martleshamitfc.. unluckily enough i wasn't grown up enough to see Alex Mathie play, even for us. I'm sorry that I forgot his name while i was commenting on our performance, while having other stuff in my head to write.

Mogga summed up the game well. I can't wait for our next win so all the hissy fits will cease and the perpetrators go into hiding.

Should read...playing 442. And to state the obvious when can we expect additional defenders?

Heard it all before PJ you need another reason for the poor games, Yes we may have played better at times in not just this game but we still get owned, I was at Blackpool and they bossed the game from start to finish yet PJ would say we had good possesion at times ( not good enough) today we get we were the better team ( clearly not 2-0 ) when will you put your hands up and say your lost for ideas.
I dont just blame PJ the men above him need to put their hands up and tell us the truth about how big the hole is in the clubs wallet.

Sack Jewell. Bring in Mccarthy. pj keeps saying players dont want to come to ipswich. Its the players dont want to play for him. Sack him now & we still have a chance.

I can not believe we have no cutting edge with the players we have. I went to the Huddersfield game and all I can say is with the right manager, the right coaching staff and another couple of centre backs we are play off material. I couldn't believe there was only just over 16k at FPR last week. I remember when we thought 24k was sh1te!!!

Only one answer in my humble opinion and if that means we have to take the dog as mentioned above, I'd take it right now.

I wonder how many of the youfs in Ipswich now support man u, man city et al???

It's a results business, end of. And results by and large in the 20 months Jewell's has been in charge have been dreadful. There's always an excuse. I'm sick and tired of this. Yes we can play quite well and lose, we can play sh1te and lose. But we lose and far too often.

As we are, we are clearly not good enough. Seventeen shots on goal and cannot score !! we have the same problems as we've had for a very long time, poor at the sharp end and poor in defence too, how can we compete like this ? we have some decent players plus a few who are not quite up to the mark, so where is the main weakness, is it poor Management together with coaching staff who are not bringing out the best from the players or is it simply that we have an incredibly poor defence and inadequate funds being made available for the better players, perhaps a combination of all of these !! all I do know is that we must improve if we are to even stay in the Championship, let alone get into the play offs, I appreciate that it is early in the season, however the warning signs are there for all to see.

Anyone know what PJ's record is to date, compared with say Royle, Magilton and Keane as it seems to be getting worse every game we play!

I just don't know what to say anymore, I was very much a pro PJ fan but it's being eroded away and whilst I'm also no great fan of sacking managers every couple of years I'm wondering if we'll ever be any different under Jewell. With our defensive frailties we could well be in a relegation scrap the way things are going.

Also there's no point being the better side if you can't at least pick up a point, although I guess it gives you less to have to work on in training, points win prizes!

Well,well, well........
Yet another game, and yet another "pointlessr" afternoon. Jewell is getting good at making excuses now. Kind of like it sounded from Roy Keane. Magilton got the sack, but neither of these to managers can compare results with him. Why did Migilton leave? Please remind me someone. And George Burley got sacked because he tried to play a more contentinal game? After my humble opinion we need a manager with more of a connection to the club ant it's history. Give me back Burley or Magilton any day of the week.

Chopra had to deal with the physical presence of Bikey today and was only denied by great goalkeeping and Taylor was looked very assured ball (even if he did only dribble from one side to the other). Apart from a bit of pressure half way through the second-half, Smith and Chambers looked solid. The reason we did not win the game was a MotM performance by their goalie Jason Steele (England U-21 'keeper) and a great find of a striker in Luke Willams.

We passed the ball around in the tradition of Ipswich teams, with some great work from Martin, N'Daw and Luongo. We dominated large periods of the game. We spread the ball out wide. Our failures were in pressing Boro when they had the ball, taking opportunities to score when presented and taking an extra touch when not necessary.

I don't get to see many games (living in the North-East) but I am pleased with the progress that we have made over the last year - since Town last visited Middlesbrough. We have to remember that Boro have invested heavily in their side and have to be considered as one of the favourites for automatic promotion. We are still work in progress...

For once i agree with PJ we played really well apart from scoring, which is of course, along with defending, which we didn't do well either, the most important part of the game! so we got what we deserved really!! We are still trying to recover from the managers poor judgement on personal last season, the purse strings are so tight now, once bitten twice shy, that PJ has very little chance of success. Still no leader at the club and ME not prepared to back the managers judgement it seems, unless it's cheap!!

where shall i start 4 defenders who cant defend and 3 strikers who cant score or even get close.defence is always a problem and yet jewell never sorted it out b4 the start of the season and murphy is never a goal scorer and this is going to be a very long season with jewell and clegg there and fans will turn their backs again on home games
