Jewell: Better Side But Lacked Cutting Edge
Saturday, 15th Sep 2012 17:51

Blues boss Paul Jewell felt his team were the better side at the Riverside despite falling to a 2-0 defeat to Middlesbrough. Town created plenty of chances and the Liverpudlian was disappointed his team failed to take any of them.

Jewell said: “I thought we were the better team, I thought we played good football, we just lacked the cutting edge today inside the box. We’ve had lots of shots, played lots of quality football, had good possession, the only thing that was missing was goals.

“We created plenty of openings and we don’t make the most of them, real gilt-edged chances, through really good football.

“We had 17 shots on goal throughout the game, but we haven’t made their goalkeeper work hard enough, hence the reason we didn’t win the game.”

The Town manager was disappointed with Boro’s first goal which came after Andy Drury’s misplaced pass midway inside his own half: “It was a sloppy ball in midfield.

"The lad [Luke Williams] finished it really well, you can’t take the finish away from him. We had good possession in the middle of the park, we lost it and the next thing we’re a goal down.”

Jewell’s side pushed for the equaliser in the latter stages before being caught on the counter-attack for the Teessiders’ second goal but he thought his team deserved more for their performance: “The story of the second half is that we piled forward, they were trying to hit us on the break.

“We kept going, we tried to keep playing, but the ball didn’t drop for us in the box today. I’m not one to blame bad luck but the bounce of the ball just didn’t fall our way.

“We tried fresh legs late on and I thought the team, everyone who came on the pitch, played their part.

“OK, we’ve lost 2-0 and people will look at the result but you’ve got to look deeper than the result at this stage of the season.

“I thought some of our play was excellent and if we’d have come away with a point we would have been disappointed. To get nothing, we’re doubly disappointed.”

Jewell said he’d comment on whether he would be pursuing his interest in German trialist Kevin Pezzoni in the week.

Middlesbrough boss Tony Mowbray admitted his side had been given a difficult afternoon: “You have to say Ipswich played very well.

“Ipswich have got a history of being good with the ball, I was there for nine years and the coaching and the philosophy and the expectation at that club is that they take care of the ball, and I think they showed that today.

“They probably lacked a bit of a cutting edge. I thought Jonathan Woodgate and Andre Bikey and Jason Steele were very good today and yet, while Ipswich might be disappointed because they played well, we’ve won the game 2-0 and you can’t be dominant every game.

“There have been some occasions when we’ve lost and been dominant with the ball and I’m happy enough to take the points.”

Just go Jewell before its too late. I really fear for us this year, we need somebody in charge who knows what they're doing.

Just seen this on vital football, cannot say fairer than this to a manager. I like evans and have never had an issue with him not facing up in public. But do agree we have been awful since he arrived but surely he is not stupid enough to not realise that.

really cannot believe the idiocy of some people on here. evans out? yer, great idea. NOT. he goes. its bye bye to itfc. maybe if most of you on here were a bit older you'd grasp the fact that me has given around £40m to the last 3 managers, in the previous 3 seasons, let alone what hes putting into the club each season just to keep us afloat. now, he's trying the more prudent approach. yes, id love us to take a risk agsin as many clubs in this division are this season, but remamber, if they don't manage to get promoted then they are going to be in serious financial trouble when the ffp comes fully into force. anyone here who wants us to be another portsmouth/rangers then fine lets do it. id rather be a little patient and see how it goes over the next couple of seasons. yes, there'll be good and bad performances in that time, but thought we were expecting that with such a young squad. but guess most of you have forgotten saying that prior to the season starting. cant also believe that anyone would want curbishley anymore. if jewell is yesterdays man, what is he. been out of the game far longer than pj.

Looks like PJ is damned if he does damned if he doesn't in some fans eyes. Creswell under performing since Villa approach PJ has managed so far to keep him and that's from what i can remember the fans wanted so positive for PJ and Clegg. Was asked to play younger in-experienced players and again that's what he has tried again what the fans wanted. Tried to get in some players but found things were limited with budgets and wages not PJ fault players and agents being greedy and couldn't finalise deals. Everyone called for Magilton to go and we ended up with Keano, they asked for Keano to go and we ended up with Jewell, are you sure getting rid of Jewell is going to solve the problem or are we going to get another manager on the cheap and end up even worse? If people thing Harry is going to Portman Road then I think they really need to think again. I know it's frustrating but fans need to calm down and be patient even our old favourite Mogga couldn't believe his side walked away with 3 points as an experienced manager he thought Town were better than must be worth something!!
Lets see how the next few games go g

Was at the game yesterday unlike most on here. Team is not good enough manager is not good enough we are a very poor championship side now top 10 finish would be a fantastic achievement. Biggest mistake ITFC made was sacking Jim we played good football with him in charge. WE ARE GOING DOWN .

Blues1 - nonsense!

Read a bit more fella and delve a bit deeper. Evans has taken on the debt and is trying to manage it that is all and he's doing it to the detriment of what we're paying for. Wake up mate.

brendenward35, Moggas commemts are called being gracious in victory against a former team! You can spin your words anyway you like but Jewell picks the team and has constantly failed to get his side to defend properly. Its not just about this weekends result, its about his whole time in charge! NOT GOOD ENOUGH!!! JEWELL OUT!!

Keaneish you are so right some people on here unbelievable we are now £74m in debt who is to blame for that Blues1 ?????

Agree with you Keanish, by trying to manage the debt, he is stifling his own wish for Premiership football as he needs to invest to improve the squad. The fact he hasnt offered such an investment to pj indicates to me perhaps a lack of confidence in him.

Lets not beat around the bush here, we have been pushing our luck for the last few years finishing as low in the league as ever with the start of this season a mirror image of the start of the last few. Make no mistake though people, I watched Wolves/Leicester today and couldnt help feeling that we were a long way off what I was seeing, and I feel its only a matter of time before we go down unless things dramatically change.

I have a degree of sympathy for pj however, like any manager in football, his success is dictated by result and I'm afraid their just not good enough.

Wolves on Wednesday is now a massive game and to be honest I worry for us.

Seems like Evans is minimizing expenditure but exaggerating ITFC's debt owed to him. He's not a white knight.

Went to the game yesterday and wondered what on earth n'daw was doing playing instead of loungo he should of played at the back if anything. Murphy won plenty of headers but to who, no one near him. Why, because we need to play two up front. Chopra needs help will not score 20 goals unless he has a strike partner.
Our defending is shocking, so we need to score goals. Perhaps murphy should play up front with him then the wingers Martin and Taylor could cross the ball to someone who could head it,hopefully into the net.

It would seem that the general opinion is that our Mr Jewell has not a clue, well i seem to agree with them, i thought clowno Keane was bad enough but this guy leaves me completely dumbfounded, i cannot see anything but disaster for us! place your bets that he will be gone by xmas!

I pray for a new manager with a little bit of the the potential of Gary Smith, the fighting spirit of Terry Butcher, the no nonsense attitude of Billy Davies, the craft of Glenn Hoddle, the sophistication of Gianluca Vialli, the amiability of Ray Wilkins and the pedigree of Rafa Benitez. Problem is in reaity there is no such manager but whoever we do eventually get surely cannot do much worse than the one we have now!

Sadly I think we've got the players but are lacking the manager with a cutting edge...big few games ahead.

Yeah Pj it is early days but nearly 2years on and you still haven't sorted the Centre Back problems & we are still struggling to score. With no budget to pay the required salary, it is unlikely to get sorted. Another season of dross to add the the last 7 poor seasons of misery.

And to top it all the 'login' link at the bottom of the page never works - sort it out Phil!

unfortunately, if we sack jewel now there aren't hardly any available managers out there. if we had sacked him last december there were half dozen.

whats the point playing like barcelona and walking away with no points? id rather see us play rubbish and pick up some points, thats a sign off a good team not playing well and losing!!! although u have to look at the table 1 win and you can jump 8-9-10 places so not all bad!!

with a name like keaneish its no wonder you cant grasp the fact thayt without evans there would be no itfc. the reason we are in so much debt is because we still in the championship. and it is evans who is puttong £5m a year into the club just to keep the club afloat(fact). theonly reason we not in a really bad situation financially is that our debt is to me, not the banks, inland revenue, etc. so yes, without him we are in a total mess. because if he goes then he'll be wanting his money back that we owe to him. so therefore our only chance of continuing to have a club to support would be if someone richer was to come in who could afford to pay him that money.

We have good players but pj continues to play a system that does not work and plays players out of position all the time, players are under performing because of this and paul jewells tactics just look at cressie for an example any new manager has got to be better than what we have here all that is needed for us to move forward is a solid defence an area which pj considers not that important obviously Paul Taylor is working his heart out at present but much more of pj,s antics and he will start thinking what's the point. like a few others.
