Jewell: We'll Lift Players During Break
Monday, 8th Oct 2012 06:00

Town boss Paul Jewell says he’ll spend the international break trying to lift his players for the trip to Hull City and the home game against his former club Derby County which follow the two-week gap. The break gives the Blues’ new loanees — Richie Wellens, DJ Campbell and Bilel Mohsni — a chance to work on their fitness and with their new team-mates.

Jewell said: “It’s always a question people always ask you. ‘is it a good time to have an international break or not?’

“It doesn’t matter, it’s there and we’ve got to try and lift the players for the next two games which come very quickly.”

Defender Tommy Smith and midfielder Josh Carson will be away with New Zealand and Northern Ireland respectively during the break.

Asked whether he’d prefer an immediate Tuesday game to follow the loss to the Bluebirds to give his side a chance to put a position result on the board, Jewell responded: “Or a Sunday morning game.”

The Blues boss was pleased with Wellens and Campbell’s performances against the Welshmen, although the pair were withdrawn in the second half due to their lack of match fitness: “I thought they both did well.

“It’s the chance you take, it’s not ideal. I think they’ll both get better with games and obviously we’ve got a two-week break now. It’s not ideal but we knew that before we took them.”

Cardiff manager Malky Mackay had no problem that Campbell didn’t own up to his handball goal just before half-time, putting the blame wholly on referee Eddie Ilderton and his linesman: “I think it’s irrelevant as the referee’s given the goal.

“It makes no odds whether he said he meant or he didn’t mean it. We’ve got a linesman and a referee who should have seen it.”

Former Canary Mackay says he has sympathy with opposite number Jewell and believes that in the Championship things can change swiftly: “It’s a tough league but things turn quickly. If you look, for example, at Peterborough, those first seven games [that they lost], then they go and win two games on the bounce.

“It’s such a precarious league, such a tough league, it’s unrelenting. Things just turn on a knife edge sometimes and sometimes takes a bobble and something to go in and teams go on a run.

“That could quite easily happen with Ipswich, they’ve got good players here. It could quite easily happen with them, like it could happen with every team in the league.

“I’ve been in this league for 15 years and it’s never changed. It’s unrelenting, it’s unforgiving and you have to put hard work in every game you go into and the players have to do that.

“Sometimes it’s a little twist or a little turn of fate that gives you a little run of games, and that could easily happen.”

Meanwhile, former Blues trialist Kevin Pezzoni has joined Hertha Berlin on trial. The former FC Köln man’s wage demands ruled out Town progressing their interest any further.

Einstein says: Insanity is doing the same thing over and over again and expecting the same results.

Not quite mate. What was actually said was, "Insanity is doing the same thing over and over again and expecting DIFFERENT results!"

This is why this club is insane at the moment... :(

Reckon Evans waiting for Bolton to sack Coyle then he will move. Just a thought as im sick of jewell. Seems a nice bloke but we are going backwards with him. Still think McCarthy would bring organisation & passion back.

The PJ style of management includes bringing in fresh players to replace existing players deemed to be under performing. This philosophy has no long term merit in a club with limited resources as it is inevitably short term. During his tenure PJ has continually failed to 'lift the players' who were struggling preferring instead to simply bring in replacements. The recent influx of loanees merely alleviates the symptoms but does not cure the disease. The 'treatment' for the disease should have happened during the transfer window. The truth is that PJ has nowhere to go now. The cards have been played and PJ has lost the hand. Like all busted gamblers he needs to walk away with all the dignity he can muster.

Get Mick McCarthy before someone else does. He could defintely show Keane/Jewellio how to do it.

I have to say that after Saturday's performance I am reasonably confident that we can get out of this mess. Paul Taylor is a big loss at the minute but him and DJ Campbell would make a heck of a front two (assuming we play two up front every now and then)

Oldbri:-Good point well made but as I sit here on my fence not knowing weather I'm n the "it was a good performance and we will turn it around" or the "we wont do anything whist Jewell remains in charge" camp, one naggng thought is running through my mind ,we have outplayed 3 out of the last 4 teams we have come up against but only have 2 out of a possible 12 points. Are we gonna be the team that outplayed the chapionship all the way to relegation.COYB

Of course the players need lifting, and its all well and good to try and do that, maybe a team bonding session or something maybe worth a shout. We have two weeks though and surely its a time for fresh ideas, whatever those might be, because I'm sure our training methods are hardly excelling. Something else that annoys me is how Jewell says how tough a League it is, its almost as if he is saying we are not good enough to compete, Brighton, Cardiff and Leicester. They dont seem to have a problem finding consistency because they have good managers who make good decisions and they have oragnised teams. It is not the nature of football that we lose games in this League Jewell, its what happens on the pitch that counts and we have lost eight in a row, if the League was how you said it was we would have won 2 or 3 of those, we are not inconsistent at the moment we are in a rut. I hate typing negative crap and in reality I am wasting my words, and the saddest part is all of us, intelligent people who are completely helpless whilst watching our club go down the pan.

I am a very patient supporter, and by and large I think the football that PJ's team plays is better than under Roy Keane. However, I can't understand why we have to go into our shells and defend really deep whenever we concede a goal. Going forward with good crisp passing, skill and movement but look like scared rabbits when we are pegged back a bit. I really do understand that the team confidence is fragile, but we will never win trying to sit back and defend a one goal lead. My criticism of PJ is that he seems to make poor and sometimes unnecessary substitutuions and doesn't gety off his seat to 'gee them up' - It is worrying that the crowds are down to just over 16000 and there appears to be a real lack of belief and lack of clear leadership. I will always cheer on the team, and I honestly believe we have a good squad of players. I wouldn't moan at PJ getting in loan players, as it is clear that he has not been given enough support in making long term signings. It is clear to all long time ITFC fans that ME and SC have not improved our club. I now feel that something drastic needs to happen to stop things steadily slipping into mediocrity. I remember when we felt that we should always be in the Prem or play offs in the champiuonship at least. I think if we do get a new manager then it should be someone who is either very keen and vocal (Billy Davies) and / or someone with ITFC running through their veins (Mick Mills / Matt Holland Terry Butcher ) COME ON YOU BLUES!!!!!

jocasaja - good point well made - The problem is 100% down to PJ as it is clear that we have the players to beat any team in this poor league. PJ clearly instructs the team to defend one goal leads at home.... Davies good shout, or what about Robinson @ MKD having said that they're better than us !!

Another poor performance , 1st half fair but no real attacking edge , 2nd half defended far too deep encouraging Cardiff to attack. Crowd was bigger than i thought must have been the cheap tickets ! I want to stand by any Ipswich manager as they are my team , but the tactics for the players look wrong , they even look confused at times. Jewell has more words than tactics so has to go . Replacement ? General Manager Joe Royle or Mick Mills they could even do hapless Cleggs job , Manager or coach Billy Davies , perhaps Butcher with the backing of a good team .We need a change if we do not get it pethaps a change of Board will help .Anyone know a rich Arab ?

I've heard that Jewell has three months to save his job (because of loan duration), now if he is still here after three months, I think Ipswich will be in serious trouble and have a very real chance of being relegated, he has no clue tactically, can't motivate players, and can't even get off his bench during games, leaving his backroom staff to issue out instructions (which obviously aren't helping).

Jewell is an honest professional and a decent manager in my opinion. However time is running out for him I suspect from his boss ME.

However I am fed up reading here "know all" comments from many fans who think they know more about football management at this level than Jewell. Guys, take a reality check !

Also, i keep asking this question: who is the replacement manager who is a) available, b) affordable, and c) comes with a CV that unquestionably says he will get us out of this league ?

Only Oldbri who thinks we are just going through a bad patch,NITFC who is reasonably confident and Tara who calls everyone else who criticises as 'Mincers' seem unconcerned about the plight of our once great club.
The league table doesn't lie and Ipswich have been mostly in the lower half of 2nd tier now for nearly 3 years.
None of the good players like Charlie Austin and many others we have been linked with have come to PR for various reasons so we continue to languish near the bottom of Championship.
Evans Clegg and Jewells permanent homes are all outside the county I believe so have no affiliation really with the club and Jewell says he doesnt read papers or go on the internet so is probably unaware of the increasing feeling of dispair that prevails.Supporters should go along to the supporters meeting due shortly to make their views known and the shareholders AGM if applicable, which are usually very compliant.
