Town Topic: Ten Years After
Thursday, 11th Oct 2012 10:27

Ten years ago today the end of George Burley's eight-year tenure as Town manager was confirmed by chairman David Sheepshanks at a hastily convened Portman Road press conference.

Given the current situation, now seems like an ideal time to look back on Burley's period in charge. What were the best games? Who were your favourite players? Which signings took Town from perennial play-off semi-finalists back into the UEFA Cup? Add your memories and thoughts below.

4-2 Wembley v Barnsley. What a day. What an atmosphere. What a performance. Close second - 5-3 semi-final against Bolton with the most unlikely hat-rick ever from Super Jim.

Best signings - Marcus Stewart, David Johnson, Martin Reuser, Bobby Petta, Matty Holland - Dyer and Tarrico home-grown/signed in the 90s

Mark Venus, what a player, what a find, what a exchange! His corners used to get me so excited the power and the pace of them.

Despite Burley's last year and half, his general record is superb.

GET HIM BACK YOU FOOLS.

For me anyway.

What a team we had, absolutely superb. All good footballers all playing great football. Was a joy to watch.

I'll throw in the obviously one - 5-0 v Norwich...beautiful Mattie hatrick...TWTD!! Win, lose or draw you were also guaranteed entertaining football at Portman Road, it's sad to see how far we've fallen in terms or excitement and atmosphere.

It was his ideology that won through, short passing triangles, cutting teams to shreads.

Always looking to attack.

He used to say he would only sign good people, few idiots joined. HOW THINGS HAVE CHANGED.

Remember listening to Danny Baker and Danny Kelly (twtd!) when Danny Kelly said 'Local derbies - always close run, nail biting games - Norwich City, come on down, with your 5 - 0 hammering at Ipswich!'

Has the be the play-off final at Wembley for me. I remember getting very drunk that day... Don't normally remember anything when I get to that stage but that day is still as clear as crystal!

Not so sure the players GB inherited were that great in 1994:-

Starting lineup in first game v Everton in which we got stuffed:
Goalkeeper Craig Forrest
Defender/Right back Frank Yallop
Defender Tony Vaughan
Defender Claus Thomsen
Defender Steve Sedgley
Defender/Centre back David Linighan
Defender/Centre back Steve Palmer
Midfielder Bontcho Guentchev
Midfielder John Wark
Midfielder Paul Mason
Forward Chris Kiwomya

But what he did have was the courage of his convictions, allowed time to build a time/style, and allowed to take the hit of relegation albeit to the League we are already in. I think a key component in these issues is the support of a football savvy hierarchy at the club in particular am thinking Mr Sheepshanks, a greater loss to this club than any manager in recent years, despite not having a crystal ball to see the collapse of the ITV money as so many of our supporters were able to apparently foresee !

Despite being a supporter of PJ I have to say that the above don't apply and at most clubs he would already be gone and without complaint. In PJs defence the lack of football knowledge here these days is beyond a joke, meaning that PJ has no one to question his decisions from a football point of view (rather than financial) and in his defense no one to support him either.

If PJ stays or goes, if GB comes back or not, we need someone else at the club, with authority who is steeped in the club and football. The great sense with which Mick Mills has performed on the radio suggests he would be a great asset to the club in some capacity albeit not as manager, but we have plenty others !

We could do a lot worse than GB with a couple of able lieutenants eg Matty Holland, But I would personally love to see Mariner back here - he was inspirational at Plymouth in an impossible situation a couple of years back - am I the only one who remembers his so-called team of misfits jumping all over him when the scored at FPR !

What joyous memories. i went on the European tour apart from Moscow. Stayed in the same hotel in Sweden as the playeras and it was a night to remember. Lots of drink and singing town songs. Marcus, Kevin was there and a host of other players.
On my 50th birthday we beat Milan 1-0 at home. I went to the away match in Milan, lost but what a stadium.
Thanks George I will never forget.

Ca't disagree with a word of Norseblue's post. Top of the list has to be Stewart though. Oh how we could do with a natural goalscorer like him today and a wise head like Mogga at the back.

A repeat of those days seem so far away now.

What about the trip to Milan as well? Can't see us going there again unless they enter the Johnson's paint trophy!

For me the best game during this period was the Play off final, the date was 29 May 2000 it was my birthday my first ever away game just me and my dad (and thousands of town fans) , best game of my life it had everything.

As for players there are a numbers of players who excelled in a town shirt during these years but for me there are a hand full that go down as legends of this club, Fabian Willnis, Matt Holland, Jim Magilton and Richard Naylor.

Holland and Magilton were the strong hold of the midfield.

Can any one honestly say that in the last 20 years has there ever been 2 players who loved and played with pride for the shirt than Fabian And Naylor.

this for me the missing key from the crop of players we have at the club now, Who in todays squad can you say is ipswich through and through.

i wish PJ would get some players who take some pride in the shirt they wear.

Play off semi vs Bolton. I was unable to get a ticket in the home end so went up to Bolton to buy a ticket. I lived in Oldham at the time and was dating someone a Lancaster Uni so it went past Bolton's ground about once a week. Was the most awkward I've ever felt during a game. Those immediately around me sussed me out. I'm not someone who sits quietly at games!

The playoff final has been mentioned. So I'll mention the trip to Milan - I know it wasn't a good performance on the field but the Town fans that day were amazing although the police were over the top. I also went to Moscow and Smederovo. Moscow was another story with the police outnumbering fans; Smederovo had the most aggressive fans - not physically but the chorus of monkey chants added to a very awkward feeling at the game (as an Asian town fan it's different feeling and I just blocked it out).

Individual moments. Armstrong's goal at home vs Inter and Reuser's goal at Wembley.

There are so many magical 'Burley Noments' what a thrill going to games, the buzz, the atmosphere and until 2002 we were always going somewhere, improving, getting stronger. Oh for that 5 year plan now and I'd take a combo of Burley with Holland for the future in a heartbeat.

Although he has his critics lets not forget the passion. Something so sorely missing at the moment!

George's best signing was undoubtedly Tony Mowbray. Best CB since Terry Butcher and brought physical strength and organisation to the back four. He could actually play a bit too.

Best signing Matt Holland. simple as. Best game either the Bolton semi or Wembley. Milan at PR was great as well!! It was sad that it ended like that for Burley but the time was right and Joe Royle did a great job on a shoestring.

Amazing to think we were still in contention for a Champions' League spot going into the last game of the 2000/01 season. Burley won the Premier League Manager of the Year award that season, I believe the first time it hadn't been won by the manager of the team that won the league.

As for players, what about Kieron Dyer? I remember being at a match at Portman Road when he broke his leg, but played on for ten minutes and scored a goal before being subbed. Then a message came over the public address system, "could Kieron Dyer's mum please go to the dressing room".

Bloody hell 10 years, it's gone so quick, too many good times to list under GB's guidance, too many good performances, too much flowing football what I'd give for that now!!

The trips we all had to Europe are the stuff of legends now :-)
Milan what a great stadium and fantastic turnout, around 11,000 if my memory recalls, Liberec was another good trip but Prague before and after the match are a few days never to be forgotten!!

Bolton at home in the return leg is still Tops it in terms of excitement and atmosphere, not least because it was also the last match played in front of the old North Stand a fitting goodbye to our once beloved and now much missed ramshackle noisebox.

Wembley I don't recall too much due to a rather early start with my mate Stella, only saw 5 minutes and got thrown out for the rest of the match, sounded great in the Car Park! I did manage to get back to see Matty get the cup so not all was lost :-)

Claim to fame: Quite possibly the last person to get thrown out of the old Wembley!!

This man destroyed this club and is indirectly responsible for the dross we are all watching at the moment. It was a glorious day when he was sacked 10 years ago, I still fondly remember the meltdown by the Haverhill nutter.

Highlights apart from Wembley? None and it was only because of staggering incompetence from the manager that we didn't finish above a useless Man City side and get promoted automatically!

We should celebrate the 11th of October every year like a birthday ... or a re-birth if you like.

IMO Magilton was the key, he pulled all the strings from the middle, what an incedible 30 yard pass he had.Up front Stewart was the key, brilliant football head could read the game so well,TWTD. There was so much good football played then, and the atmosphere at PR was amazing. What on earth has gone wrong.

No mention of the Herminator!!!

It was the right time for GB to go and now might be the right time for him to come back.

George Burley and Mick Mills were brilliant for Town on the pitch how good would they be in managing the Town?.
