Hutchings: Jewell Still Town Boss
Tuesday, 23rd Oct 2012 23:08

Paul Jewell remains manager of Ipswich Town tonight, despite this evening’s 2-1 defeat to Derby County at Portman Road. Assistant Chris Hutchings took the post-match press conference, held almost an hour after the final whistle.

Hutchings confirmed that Jewell is still the Town boss: “He’s manager of this football club right at this moment. That’s how it is.”

Asked whether that situation might change before Saturday, the Blues assistant added: “You need to ask Marcus that question.

“We’re bottom of the league, Peterborough won tonight. We’re going about our jobs unless we’re told otherwise, it’s as simple as that.”

He says Jewell was yet to speak to Evans, who wasn’t at tonight’s match: “I don’t think he has at this moment in time. I think the owner is in Barbados.”

Hutchings says Jewell in his office reviewing the match: “Right at this minute he’s watching a DVD because he’s right bleeped off that we’ve conceded again in the 90th minute, which is very disappointing.

“He wears his heart on his sleeve. You saw on Saturday he was very disappointed and we’re disappointed again tonight.

"He says it as it is and we’ve got to come out fighting again. We’ve got a game to prepare for on Saturday and that’s what we’ll be doing.”

Asked why Jewell wasn’t taking the press conference, for the first time after a game since he came to the club, Hutchings admitted that he had been asked to speak by the club press office and added: “He’s not here because he’s in the office now, watching the DVD and going through trying to put things right because that’s what we need to do.

"I’ve done it before," he continued. "Maybe not before here but at other clubs I have.”

As for the match itself, Hutchings was disappointed that it was the same increasingly familiar story: “I thought we played quite well in the first half and scored a good goal. It’s good that DJ has scored his second goal. Was it an OG or did he sneak it? He’ll claim it.

“Then we let them get in the game for about 10 minutes. They kept possession a little bit better, then Danny Higginbotham made a mistake with a rash clearance and then the keeper spilled it and they popped it in the net.

“From going in 1-0 at half-time and I felt quite comfortable, you go in 1-1 and a little bit disappointed. And to concede late on again is very, very disappointing, although we could have played better in the second half.”

Derby boss Nigel Clough felt his side’s performance warranted the three points: “I think we deserved it on the balance of play. I think once we got the first 20 or 25 minutes out of the way and changed it back to a 4-4-2, some of the stuff we played in the second half was exceptional.

“You’re a little bit worried when you’ve had so much of the game in the second half at 1-1 and it just takes one mistake, one set play and we end up losing 2-1 as we have done in previous seasons here, but I think we deserved it and I’m delighted that Nathan got the winner.”

Jewell really needs to go, now. He showed no passion on the touchline this evening and he has quite clearly run out of ideas. I'm not one to boo my team and I didn't tonight, but sitting in Sir Bobby Lower it is clear that nobody wants him to stay. As much as I hate to say it I agree with the chants and I fully expect him to go tomorrow morning. If he doesn't I will lose all respect for the people running our club. While we're at it, tonight't game was calling for Josh Carson running at the Derby defence for the last 20/30 minutes! Ipswich 'til I die, but I'm afraid it's Jewell's time to go.

I remember when chopra and bullard went awol and bullard got loads of grief but chopra got off. jewell showed how poor his man management was and no doubt lots of our players lost respect for him as both players should of been treated the same.

kentblue92 and Iamspartacus. dont understand why u dont understand its 5 mill.
128k/wk = 6.6 mill /yr . threequarters of a year payoff = 4.95 mill. No?

It is inevitable, Jewell will be gone tomorrow, only a fool would stand by him now and Mr Evans is no fool, I'm sad for the Man but this club is going under if we don't make the right decisions this week.

There is no way Jewell is on 128k a week therefore the 5mil pay off is irrelevant as I'm 99.9% sure it's based on incorrect figures.

I agreed with what most of mick mills said on the radio. A football minded middleman between Evans and Clegg would help enormously. And a head of the scouting department, because if the only players we are scouting are all in the Higginbothom/wellens/henderson mould, then frankly our scouting network is absolutely shocking!

Finally everone is seeing the shambles that our once great club is in according to the posts. For weeks I've been reading "he's a nice bloke", "he'll turn it round", "give him time" etc...etc...etc.

That fact that Hutchings has been wheeled out to waffle the same cr*p that our manager has been spouting for ages, goes to show what a poor excuse for a management team we have.

Watching DVD's, he's right bleeped off, what a load of b******t, why the f**k can't he do the decent thing and walk. Like so many of us town fans I'm sick to death with the never ending stream of excuses from PJ/Hutch, while we are watching ten ton of garbage fail every match on the pitch.

The players have given up, the fans have lost hope, the manager is clueless, and ME's on holiday, about sums this mess up don't it.

@ Portmanteau: I don't believe, in the slightest, that Jewell gets paid that much, that is why the figures are ludicrous.

Even Alex Ferguson doesn't get paid that much per week!- I would guess at Jewell being on less than £10k per week, the higher figure isn't even vaguely realistic.

kentblue92 and Iam spartacus. ok did a re- read . agree with you salary of 128k/wk is not credible so 5 mill cannot be cost of payoff. hope we are right...

We are, don't worry ;-)

I just hope, whatever the pay off, it happens tomorrow (or rather, today).

The most telling point is that Town concede late goals, and very often losing goals, in the added time in nearly every game. That isn't coincidence. That shows that there is something fundamentally wrong with the players' pysche. As many have only just begun playing for the club it cannot be down to lack of confidence either. It may lack of fitness or lack of organisation but it seems to me that it is really lack of spirit, lack of concentration and lack of application. If the manager cannot address even that then I think he should do the honourable thing and leave. And I do think that he is a sincere and honourable man, but I cannot see how he things he can turn this around, especially if the dressing room is not united.

We are being run as a business, plain and simple.
It makes no business sense to sack Jewell, so Jewell will not be sacked. We will have to do pay-offs of Manager etc/get rid of other staff/ more pay-offs. Bring in new manager and new staff- more money....
Basically, its going to cost a fair whack to sack Jewell. Knowing how our club is on player salaries, it seems unlikely that Jewell will be sacked.
We just have to hope that Jewell walks.
This seems also unlikely. Where is he going to go? Look at his recent record in English Football? No respectable football club is going to employ his talents. Can you imagine his job interview?
"Yes, I can take good footballers and turn them into average ones. I can also turn average ones into clowns. Like to see highlights of the Ipswich defence whilst I was in charge?"
Hey...I didn't get the job! What the hell!!"
He needs a pay-out to allow him time to find something else to do. So he is most likely to wait.
Meanwhile our club is bottom of the league, our defence remains a laughing stock. Good players come in and turn into bad ones within a month.
Keane followed by Jewell. Difficult to come in and do a bad job after that........

As usual square pegs in round holes,no cohesive forward movement. Also noticed Derby switched to 442 before they scored.Talking of scoring George Boyd scored 2 today, and just like Charlie Austin slipped through a very holey net!
Chairman in Barbados(think thats his personal tax haven) and Manager hasn't the bottle to address the press,or in fact attend tomorrows supporters AGM,both being done by Chris Hutchings.
Whilst on subject of ME and with ref to earlier post, the truncated accounts presented to shareholders at AGM shows the following under interest payable and similar charges.
yr to 20/6/2009 3100000
20/6/2010 3,133000
20/6/2011 3,311,000
This years AGM is normally at the beginning of December so that would make about 12.5m taken out in 4 years, presumably most if not all to ME(We dont receive full accounts)Total liability of over £66m included £8m pref shares and £34m of loan notes redeemable in 2026.
It was understood that the debt he took over was some £34m;but he purchased it for between £6 & £10m;so he has comfortably repaid the initial sum to himself or the Marcus Evans Group which is basically his corporate vehicle.
However as we know he has continued to fund the club but the full debt is still outstanding and has now doubled.

Jewell's attitude is concerning too, at least Steve Kean plugged away with every ounce he had in him, he never once said anything bad about the players and always tried his chip up after defeats. Jewell is naturally low after the results we've had but he doesn't seem to have the ability to lift himself he just sits there all the game shaking his head, what kind of impression does that give to his players? we haven't got time to say he is manager for now, lets give him another game ect because we are in a desperate situation.

Evans out of the country, Jewell watching DVDs instead of talking to the press,Hutchings bumbling his way through an interview with Radio Suffolk before rejoining Jewell to watch the DVD?? Lets just hope the DVD is Final Destination - Ipswich v Derby 23rd October 2012.
Anyone seen or heard from Clegg?
Shambles.

What an absolute shambles, as someone said I don't know whether to laugh or cry.

Jewell HAS to go, right NOW.

His team is a complete joke, loans to replace loans to replace promising Ipswich youngsters - WTF! stupid tactics, rediculous subs, no strategy or plan that anyone can see. Totally out of his depth and sadly a broken man. No one can say we didn't give him more than a fair chance though, average championship manager only lasts 14months - he's had nearly 2 years and we're going backwards fast.

As for the owner being in Barbados at this critical time, leaving not just Jewell but the whole damn club to flounder towards relegation - it's unbeliveable! Evans is a F****** BILLIONAIRE he can go on holiday WHENEVER HE WANTS. He CHOSE to go on holiday, he could've regarded ITFC as more important than his holiday...but well it wasn't.

As for this crock about DVD's - I've heard it all now. Incredible. Jewell isn't refusing to talk to the PRESS, in fact he refusing to talk, engage, inspire or even acknowledge the FANS, US. FFS!

It's such a mess, who can turn this around, get a grip of the dressing room, the media, the fans, clegg and evans AND rebuild the football team. It's a mammoth job, and I agreed with most of what Mick Mills said on Radio Suffolk after the game we must'nt rush in and just get anyone - it's the most important appointment at ITFC in decades IMPO and it's crucial we get in right this time.

I have to say I'm not overly confident based on Evans track record so far....

Vitalfootball's response to tonight is hilarious not exactly impartial..

"Despite wishful-thinking, wild specualtion and rubbish reporting, Paul Jewell is still the Ipswich Town manager.

Rumours, fuelled by Twitter, ill-informed local reporters, websites and even radio Suffolk, swept around that Jewell ahd left Portman Road and ewas no onge rmanager.
But then his assistant Chris Hutchins bowls up and tells everyone Jewell can't be bothered to speak to fans via the press and instead is watching a DVD of the game.

We are told he will still be manager in the morning and probably on saturday against Sheffield Wednesday unless Marcus Evans grows some balls and sacks the lot of them"

actually i should state that the last comment was innacurate because we only seem to lose a agme one way and that is in the 90th minute!

On the plus side. If a manager was to come in, building a team from scratch wouldnt be a problem, considering 95% of our team is not even ours! And 6 of the 8 loans leave in january!

Oh Dear, If ITFC had won what would be all the postings then? What about looking at the performance and whether it showed PJ is shaping a team to improve or to continue as is? Or is that naive?

Was really expecting bigger changes tonight team wise reo & wellens prem players, everyone agrees ithink but you have 2 players here in the middle of the park with about 7games under their belts since christmas ,so not surprising that they cant contain the youthful legs and ambition of up and coming derby players. This leading to the fact why not hyam, luongo in there with the latter makeing his foward probing runs takes quite a bit of pressure of the def/mf.As for l. Martin he needs bringing down to earth cresswell left m/f, try dury left back , get the mohsni monster up front with dj he's just dying to show us something teams wont get so much time to build play from back with him breathing down their necks.we stillgot ndaw carson to mix it up for different look .it all seems so easy dosn"t it when you can just post your thoughts but dont have listen to screaming fans moanings players etc and come up with solutions .just dont understand whats going on hear we should be ripping into oppisition ,it's madness!!! but wil be ipwich till i die! Just like my old grandads were
