Hutchings: Jewell Still Town Boss
Tuesday, 23rd Oct 2012 23:08

Paul Jewell remains manager of Ipswich Town tonight, despite this evening’s 2-1 defeat to Derby County at Portman Road. Assistant Chris Hutchings took the post-match press conference, held almost an hour after the final whistle.

Hutchings confirmed that Jewell is still the Town boss: “He’s manager of this football club right at this moment. That’s how it is.”

Asked whether that situation might change before Saturday, the Blues assistant added: “You need to ask Marcus that question.

“We’re bottom of the league, Peterborough won tonight. We’re going about our jobs unless we’re told otherwise, it’s as simple as that.”

He says Jewell was yet to speak to Evans, who wasn’t at tonight’s match: “I don’t think he has at this moment in time. I think the owner is in Barbados.”

Hutchings says Jewell in his office reviewing the match: “Right at this minute he’s watching a DVD because he’s right bleeped off that we’ve conceded again in the 90th minute, which is very disappointing.

“He wears his heart on his sleeve. You saw on Saturday he was very disappointed and we’re disappointed again tonight.

"He says it as it is and we’ve got to come out fighting again. We’ve got a game to prepare for on Saturday and that’s what we’ll be doing.”

Asked why Jewell wasn’t taking the press conference, for the first time after a game since he came to the club, Hutchings admitted that he had been asked to speak by the club press office and added: “He’s not here because he’s in the office now, watching the DVD and going through trying to put things right because that’s what we need to do.

"I’ve done it before," he continued. "Maybe not before here but at other clubs I have.”

As for the match itself, Hutchings was disappointed that it was the same increasingly familiar story: “I thought we played quite well in the first half and scored a good goal. It’s good that DJ has scored his second goal. Was it an OG or did he sneak it? He’ll claim it.

“Then we let them get in the game for about 10 minutes. They kept possession a little bit better, then Danny Higginbotham made a mistake with a rash clearance and then the keeper spilled it and they popped it in the net.

“From going in 1-0 at half-time and I felt quite comfortable, you go in 1-1 and a little bit disappointed. And to concede late on again is very, very disappointing, although we could have played better in the second half.”

Derby boss Nigel Clough felt his side’s performance warranted the three points: “I think we deserved it on the balance of play. I think once we got the first 20 or 25 minutes out of the way and changed it back to a 4-4-2, some of the stuff we played in the second half was exceptional.

“You’re a little bit worried when you’ve had so much of the game in the second half at 1-1 and it just takes one mistake, one set play and we end up losing 2-1 as we have done in previous seasons here, but I think we deserved it and I’m delighted that Nathan got the winner.”

Marcus Evans is rotting our football club and profitting from it as he goes. He is the bank. We pay him interest on the debt we owe him. He sanctions the sale of our players to pay off that debt and to pay himself the interest on that debt. This isn't new news but it's concise and easy to read...

http://www.financialfairplay.co.uk/

Can someone financial post on here and confirm whether this is right?

If Evans pays off Jewell's contract from his own pocket (reputedly 5 million) ITFCs debt increases by 5 million but the interest payments do to which are a mandatory payment back to Marcus Evans PLC? So Evans is in a win win situation? Is that how it works?
If that's the case, then Evan's doesn't care who's in charge as long as we don't go down. Naturally it's better for him if we go up as he'll get a better return on investment but as long as we don't go down...he's quids in all round!

Pretty sure there will be a press conference tomorrow morning. I think it's abundantly clear that Jewell is not the man to turn this club's fortunes around.

If not then we are sleepwalking towards relegation.

The players were a bloody disgrace tonight. They have no interest in playing for the manager, the Club or us fans. Sack the bloody lot of 'em. They're an UTTER DISGRACE!

Strangely he could find time to do the main ITFC website interview video, but then had to go and watch the video before doing any others.

Watching a DVD 'Trying to put things right' says Hutchings... pah. Leaving the club might be a good start. Taking Clegg with him would be another.

Dismal effort in the second half justifying the lowest home league attendance since, on a quick look through the records, at least the last 11 seasons... Add in the fact that Jewell's decision to bring in a new 'keeper to make mistakes of his own, when Loach was unfairly discarded for what was essentially 1 poor game (he may of had a couple of other wobbles but so would any keeper behind a defence that is so lacking in confidence).

I just hope the owner is going to sack Jewell by phone or Skype tomorrow... frankly, carrier pigeon will do. He has to go.

I can't quite get my head round this. Tonight was the first time the fans properly voiced their opinions, over what has been another shambolic period for our club. Any self respecting man would of resigned after the game after what they heard at the final whistle! I'm sick of watching the same old dross every week, and hearing the same spineless excuses. GET OUT OF OUR CLUB!

Couldn't go tonight as I was working, almost glad! Had to follow the games through goal update texts and I must admit I was just waiting for Derby to score the winner, and sure enough...
Then I get the news that Peterborough had won! As @sexpotsharon would say, "Fewmin'"

Where are people getting this 5 million figure for paying off Jewell from?
I highly doubt it's that much. He has like 9 months left on his contract max, so for 12 months he'd be on like 6.6m a year. He'd be on 128k a week at that rate...

Just as a reference to people saying it would take £5mil to pay Jewell off. I seriously doubt it.

Lets suppose there is around 36 weeks of the contract left.
£5mil/ 36 weeks= £142k per week.

Even with the most generous clause in his contract, I don't the very discerning eyes of Clegg and Evans (when it comes to the amounts on contracts it seems, anyway) would have agreed to something so lavish.

All of Clegg , Evans , Jewell and half the bloody team need to clear right off , rather play with the U21 and have Osman in charge . Never known it this bad in the 36 yrs ive supported Ipswich. Absolutely hate walking into work after this shambles has played. They are all as bad as each other , Martin needs to to be told you sign the contract or you are in the reserves, it is simple....play for the club or go no more pandering to spoilt little boys ......absolute crapola.

Is there even one fan who wants PJ to stay? Dont be so sure about him being a saint and an all round good guy btw. If he was, he would walk. The reason he is staying isnt for any other reason than he knows full well that his abject failure here is one blot too many on his copybook and is tantamount to not working again management. He will be very aware that his entire career (both as a manager and as a credible tv pundit) is looking down a barrel right now

Unfortunitely we are now a shambles - listening to Mick Mills on the way back to
Lowestoft from the game n totally agree with him never thought I would say this but we need some sort of director of football type person to help Marcus and Simon run club as Unfortunitely that's two managerial appointments that really could not have gone any worse. Saying Clegg out in my opinion is pointless he won't be sacked as he's Marcus's puppet but he needs help badly I just hope it's not too late before somethig is done

Sadly our once great Football Club is in total disarray. It looks increasingly likely that Jewell will still be here on Saturday which if the case is sheer madness. Jewell is not the sole reason we lost tonight as we should have been two up inside 20 minutes but again missed golden chances. We played OK in periods of the first half but once the equaliser went in we all knew what the outcome would be. Jewells substitutions were nothing short of farcical and what goes behind his thinking is beyond me. Our midfield completely lost the plot in the second half but Jewell did not recognise that fact and effectively surrendered to in my opinion an ordinary Championship side. We are in a massive hole now which at the moment looks too deep to get out of unless drastic changes are made. Jewell should be gone in the morning togther with Hutchings and McCarthy brought in asap. Did not agree with a lot of what Mick Mills said on Radio Suffolk after the match as taking our time to get a new manager as he suggested is ludicrous. We need a new Manager now not in 3 weeks time. Clegg also needs to pack his bags leaving Sally Webbe to do the paperwork and get a Bryan Hamilton type in as a director of football. Will this happen - I fear not. Radio Suffolk did not cover thermselves in glory tonight either with their conflicting reports. If they did not have the facts they should not report conjecture. The whole evening has been a massive disappointment and I despair as to how Ipswich Town have got to its lowest ebb in over 50 years.

Paul Jewell how much money have you acumilated in your career of Football? no doubt it will be in the millions which is far beyond what the avaerage Joe can expect in a lifetime so by that rationale you are a very finacially greedy person waiting for a payout because again you have shown you won't walk... your actions are a disgrace and should get a reality check from people living on the bread line. Clegg your even worse.. i actually hate Clegg and I would be so happy for him to read this.. he's just behind the list with 1. Investment Bankers 2. Bureacuractic Politions 3. Simon ***** Clegg.

The clubs turned into a soap opera, does anyone actually front the club and say what is exactly going on.

You have the Captain saying before the gane that he's not sure if the players were all with pj.

Post Hull, pj actually publicing questioning his own ability. And he's relying on players here for another few weeks to get us out of this mess.

Weres the leadership, heart and soul of this club? Everythings going to hell!!! Were exactly do we go from here people? I dont know.

Someone needs to take the reins of this club and take it forwards because I just cant see any at the moment.

@keanish thanks for link which makes interesting reading and confirms what some have pointed out from day one that evans is using losses at itfc to offset profits in other parts of the group so club is merely tax tool

Good question megamoth is there 1 fan who was there tonight who still wants Jewell to stay? Derby should stand as an example to us. They are a team in every sense of the word, no star names but played for each other and for their manager, who commands respect. CLOWN OUT!!!
