Quartet Linked With Blackpool Boss
Saturday, 27th Oct 2012 23:13

Blackpool manager Ian Holloway is reported to be interesting Town and the various other Championship clubs currently looking for new bosses.

The Blues and Crystal Palace — who are also understood to be interested in another candidate for the Town job Mick McCarthy - are said to have joined the likes of Burnley and Blackburn in targeting the 49-year-old.

The Seasiders would apparently want around £500,000 if any of the clubs firm up their apparent interest in the former Bristol Rovers, QPR, Plymouth and Leicester manager.

Blackpool, who Holloway led into the Premier League via the play-offs in 2009/10, are currently 12th in the Championship having lost last season’s play-off final to West Ham.

Holloway, who hasn’t always enjoyed an entirely harmonious relationship with chairman Karl Oyston, is on a one-year rolling contract at Bloomfield Road.

Earlier this week, Town chief executive Simon Clegg didn't rule out the Blues moving for a manager currently with a club, although we understand the Blues are yet to approach the Seasiders.

Meanwhile, Kevin Bond, one of Harry Redknapp’s faithful lieutenants at his various clubs, was in the Portman Road directors’ box today.

As reported earlier in the week, we understand Bond was on Town’s list of potential successors to Paul Jewell but is expected to follow the former Spurs boss to his next club, QPR having been linked.

Redknapp is believed to be one of the footballing figures advising Marcus Evans and Bond may also be part of the Blues' owner's coterie.

As far as Ollie is concerned, stranger things have happened, now who would have bet that Lambert up the road would leave carrot rd? he did to a bigger club! after much sucess!
Ollie likes and respects ITFC, he has all the correct qualities, takes no crap from players nor management, he would be my favourite and love to see him here!

YES YES! I have been saying for months Holloway is the man! He is the only Manager we the experience and the track recorded to do well and on a small budget. He was interviewed for the job before Jim got it, was keen to come then, might be different now though. However I get the feeling he is looking to move on but I don't have any faith in Evans and co to get the right man.

What a joke, who do we think we are? As if he's going to come to a team 5 points adrift at the bottom of the league.

Oldbri, Cannot disagree with any of that, but none of that relates to Town, all clubs are going through the statements you have made, surely we only concern ourselves (at present) with the state of our club, I would love to be in a position where we can worry about the state of football as a whole, of which it is badly ran / managed and administered, but at the moment i do not care about any of that only ITFC and making sure we are staying around and in a position where we can worry about UEFA / Premier League and the Sky TV packages.

I could see this one happening, I'm sure Holloway has made positive comments about Ipswich before.. along the lines of he'd love the job

At the moment we would take anyone who can pull us out of the mire we are in at the moment. We as fans have to get behind the team once this biggest decision in the clubs history has been made.. This board will be split as usual when the new manager is named but what worries me is that Clegg will still hold his position, I think a vote of no confidence should be made at the clubs AGM in November if they hold one.

If Evans and Clegg pull this one off then it would be excellent! Holloway has always spoken highly of ITFC - but our current situation is not attractive and may rule a higher profile manager out. It would seem Burley is in with an good chance - but for me - despite being disappointed when Burley was sacked - it would be a massive backwards step. People forget the mess that George left us in - after signing big money failures like Finidi George, Matteo Sereni, Ulrick Le Pen and Amir Karic. In addition it rarely works when a player / manager returns to their former club. Sadly, I think we should look forward not backwards and that should rule George out.

So to sum up, McCarthy is a failure on lots of levels and at lots of places, Holloway is ignorant and unmanageable (see his history) and listenm to him talk, Curbishley is n o fool but thinks he is worth a bigger job in his own world, Megson has done failrly well but see Holooway for personal problems, Burley has been looking for the Holy Grail since we sacked him and not found it (remember Scotland role?) Coyle is as big a no as McCarthy for similar reasons, successa t one club then failure elsewhere. Sidekicks to other managers eg Kevin Bond are a gamble too far?
That leaves a manager who will come from a smaller club and use us as a stepping stone to the premiership job they deserve.
Not looking good to me at the moment.

Bond would be the ultimate nightmare appointment - just look how he fared at Bournemouth. Sure, Holloway would be exciting but ITFC have been conceding far too many daft/avoidable goals for a long time now, and I can't see him being the man to address this fundamental problem.

For me Curbishley remains the outstanding candidate by a mile, and if he hasn't already been formally approached then I can't understand why not. He's done it all before and unlike all the other "experienced" candidates he's never failed to deliver. I also sense that if successful he would stick with the club, unlike Keane who only ever saw it as a stepping stone. Clegg talks about having "34 applications" to sift through, but in all likelihood the bulk of them will be from recent failures at other clubs - what's wrong with being pro-active and going after the right man for the job, particularly if he isn't already contracted to someone else.

I know its only been a few days, but the dithering is giving me bad vibes, and I sense another "crass" appointmens is on the cards. Clegg's record to date isn't exactly great - Keane was never the right appointment for a homely club like ITFC, although I was surprised just how spectacularly he failed. His man management was appalling (Garvan, Miller, Stead, Counago, Lisbie to name but 5 examples), as was his judgement of a player (Rhodes, Trotter, Priskin, Martin, Delaney spring to mind). As for Jewell, there was plenty of evidence available from his spells at Wednesday & Derby to suggest that he was always likely to fail at ITFC.

One last thought ... Magilton was dumped because the fans got on his back when he failed to deliver instant promotion with Marcus' cash. I bet the club wouldn't be in this mess if they had stuck with him! Be careful what you wish for......

Hi tractorboybeer,it does concern town because ,if you follow it backwards from town, players can decide I dont like the manager or my team mate ,I wont put in an honest effort. They have cost so much to buy and maintain that you cant just sack them. They are reasonably safe. Why is this state of affairs possible? because of Sky paying so much into the game ,to the top clubs, who attract the top players from around the world, who are paid massive wages. As players are paid so much money ,they are not worried about being out of work for a couple of months, like the rest of us would be.Premier league clubs can afford large squads .Teams come down with a parashute payment. The forming of the Premier league split the football system in half with the top clubs taking the majority of the money and starving the lower leagues.Yet championship players have ideas that because premier players are paid this much, they should be paid slightly less.Championship clubs can gamble on promotion by over paying players ,to attract them to their club.ie Portsmouth. How many players did Paul Jewell say he had in his office wanting to join the club but then after contract negotiations they decided to go else where.Premier league clubs have no loyalty to football or to England or they would not have so many players from abroad.
Jimmy Bullard came to our club, put in a good shift, earnt a contract ,then, gave up trying.

I rest my case.

Sorry,I should have said, the important part of my rant was ,mainly the sentance (,How many players did Paul Jewell say he had in his office wanting to join the club but then after contract negotiations they decided to go else where ) sums up how it effects town. How can we get top players by abiding by the financial management rules ,whilst others do not. Thats why we end up with loan players and players others are giving away.

If that is all it would take to get our man in Holloway at Portman rd to sort out this total waste of space called ITFC players, then i for one will chip in some dosh!
As said before he takes no crap from anyone, management or players, speaks his mind, says it how it is! exactly what is needed at our beloved club, he will certainly be a match for Cleggy!
C,mon town get him here!

As much as I would love Holloway to come to Ipswich (he'd be a fantastic appointment) I simply cannot see it happening. The Town job would be such a risk for 'Olly, who has built himself a solid reputation in recent years. I think under normal circumstances he would love to join us as there is only so far he can take Blackpool (no disrespect), but this precarious position of our club could really damage a manager's stock if he can't turn our fortunes around.

Ian Holloway is no doubt a very heart on your sleeve manager and gives it 100% effort, he's been reasonably successful with what I call 'smaller teams' - yes has done well at Blackpool and Plymouth but the expectations at Leicester were higher and didn't do particularly well.

I think there are numerous managers and partnerships that can get us out of the mire but whether they can get us one step further and gets us towards the Premiership is another thing altogether. If Holloway was appointed I wouldn't be unhappy but I feel the Curbs/Holland/Day team would be better for the club in the long run.

Can anyone remind me the name of the assistant manager who took over the team and beat Arsenal After Keane was sacked. He took the team over and put the players into their best positions. We should have kept him for another few games and who knows?

debenturedave added 13:21 - Oct 28
Yes please Marcus, Ollie would be an excellent choice if we could get him. If not Curbs with Holland will do the job, but hurry or relegation is staring us in the face .
