McCarthy Has Made Loan Decisions
Tuesday, 6th Nov 2012 06:00

Manager Mick McCarthy is yet to speak to his Leicester counterpart Nigel Pearson about keeping midfielder Richie Wellens, whose loan spell is up after Saturday's game against Burnley, beyond his initial month. Longer term, McCarthy says he already knows which of Town’s eight loan players he’d like to keep at the club.

The former Ireland boss has said he would like to keep the ex-Manchester United trainee Wellens but whether that happens depends on a number of factors: “I haven’t spoken to [Foxes boss] Nigel Pearson and they are his parent club. There are a lot of things there. No doubt he’s been sent here to get fit.

“They’re still in a great position, so would he get back in the team? Nigel might see it that he wants to leave him here, he might want him back.

“Richie might want to stay here and play. I’ve no idea. I liked his performance on Saturday. I’ll speak to Nigel.”

In terms of which of the loan players — and Nigel Reo-Coker who is on a short-term deal until January — McCarthy already knows who he’d like to hold on to.

“I know now,” he said, “but I’m not going to tell you. Do you think I don’t know about DJ Campbell, Nigel Reo-Coker, Stephen Henderson, Danny Higginbotham, Daryl Murphy and Guirane N’Daw? I know about them, I knew before I came.

“What I would say is I think those players have all shown real commitment to playing here. I was delighted with them on Saturday, the ones that played, and Bilel Mohsni when he went on.

“I like their attitude towards it despite them being on loan. They don’t look to me like they’re just on loan to get fit and they’re not bothered. They look to me like they care, certainly on Saturday they were terrific.”

But he admits he’s concerned by the number of loanees which makes further new additions unlikely in the short-term.

“I can only play five of [the domestic loans]. I can only have five on the teamsheet and the four that started on Saturday played really well, they were good,” he said.

“That makes life complicated. I don’t know if any of those will go back. If they do, will I be able to get another one? Will I find someone? We’ll see, that’s all in the mix.”

Long-term, he will be after new recruits with McCarthy stressing that Town are far from out of the woods, despite Saturday’s victory at Birmingham: “We’ve won one game. We’re bottom of the league with seven points, we’ve been getting slapped every week, I’ve had one game, which was a good performance, a good result and it makes everything seem a little bit brighter.

“But, all that went on before, we could fall back into that malaise. I’ve no idea. I’ve not inherited Brazil, we played a fairly direct way of playing on Saturday, but it was a winning performance. But I’ll be looking for players, of course I will.”

In terms of those already at the club, he admits he’s still finding his feet: “I’m getting there, some of the lads I keep having to ask their names, not the first teamers, but the kids.”

The manager says he’ll work on that when he’s at Playford Road on Wednesday morning for the rearranged U21 match against Swansea City (KO 11am).

I'd like to keep all of them please. Wages might be an issue with DJ, NRC, and N'Daw. But, all of the loan signings (with the exception of Luongo) are players that are feasibly getable. Also with any luck, those players only here until January but be so enthused by our progress up the league that they desperately want to stay. We could get Murphy N'daw and Moshni, probably even higgingbottom, all on frees.

Mick has a great history of identifying & signing young, skillful & honest, relatively inexpensive, players, the types that fit exactly into the team he is building. I have every confidence in him to do the same here with us.

in my opinion the priorities are those who we have a chance of signing permanently which is all bar wellens and luongo.

"I've not inherited Brazil"

Why would you want him. He's FAR from match fit. Leave him on Talk Sport!

I like the look of Wellens, has shown committment and the way he spoke out after the SW match shows passion too.

Would sooner send two of the others back (Henderson and Murphy) if it means we can keep him. Would make a good captain.

Keep them all baring Luongo (we do not need him), offer Chopra in exchange for Wellens and when it comes to signing the others loans permanent, at that exact time of negotiations send Clegg down the local hardware store to get some 'sky clips or skirting board ladders' and let MM and Evans do the talking!

We are in safe hands, we will get no dross in on loan anymore, no stupid sales like Rhodes.

I had forgten what it was like to have a competent manager.

It feels great!

The January transfer window will be all about getting Wellens, Higginbotham, N'Daw, Reo-Coker and possibly DJ Campbell (wages might be an issue) signed up permanently. We need some consistency and it's great to hear Mick saying that they have the right attitudes.

When we get to the summer then hopefully Mick will unearth some more gems from the lower leagues as he has done at every other club he's been at. Matt Ritchie would add alot of creativity from the wing. He was amazing last year and has made a seamless transition from League Two to League One with Swindon (netting 6 goals and 4 assists in 14 games so far this season). The same applies to MacFadzean at Crawley, who looks like a solid no nonsense defender who I'm sure would jump at the chance to join a bigger club. Harry Maguire at Sheffield United is already League One's best centre back at the tender age of 19. Then I think we may already have a potential goal machine of the future within our own ranks. Jack Marriott seems to score goals in the youth and 'reserves' at a similar rate to Jordan Rhoades, so it is vitally important that we actually give this kid a chance.

I agree with DanLyles about Ritchie, he would be a great signing. As would Paul Caddis who we were linked with last year. He's fallen out with Paolo di Canio at Swindon and is on loan at Birmingham. He was doing really well there until he injured his shoulder. He's more than capable of playing at this level, and has an awesome understanding with Ritchie...

Swindon struggle to score, with a decent striker like DJ to supply, they would get loads of assists.

I suspect a lot of the loans will go back. Wellens won't be sold by Leicester, whilst henderson will be on massive wages. Murphy isn't good enough IMO. DJ would be a good signing (on a permanent deal), but have been unimpressed with the guy from Southend; and if they really want a reported £1M I suspect he'll go back. The young guy from Spurs seems out of favour, so he may return early, whilst N'Daw is Micks type of player, who will no doubt stay the season.

I think it's a little early to suggest you've seen enough of the players to know if they are suitable for THIS job.

I agree totally with ITFC1981, we now have a competent manager and long term we will be strong under his stewardship. I certainly think he's already looked past loans to the January window. I believe he already knows who he wants to keep remembering that he knows most of our big names such as Chopra. It's been less than a week and I don't know about anyone else, but I certainly feel good about the future; even if we have a few bad times in the near future..it will work out OK.
